The Department of Health-Regional Office 12 (DOH-12) is now under the helm of a new regional director in the person of Dr. Aristides Concepcion Tan, MPH, CESO III.
Dr. Aristides Tan assumed his post last October 2, 2017. With hopefulness and gratitude, Dr. Tan was officially introduced by Dr. Amebella G. Taruc, OIC-ARD of DOH 12 during the Welcome and Hand-over ceremony held at Montañer Hall, DOH XII Compound, Cotabato City.
Assistant Secretary of Health for Mindanao, Dr. Abdullah B. Dumama, Jr. and former OIC-Regional Director of DOH 12, Dr. Francisco V. Mateo, led the endorsement of the new director and symbolic hand-over.
Dr. Tan served as the Regional Director of DOH 9 from June 2016 to September 2017 before this new assignment. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Tan was very thankful for the warm welcome of DOH 12 staff together with attach agencies, including NNC XII, for which he sincerely expressed that he already feels like home.

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Sept. 19 (PIA) — On its fifth year of Search for Best Gulayan sa Barangay, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) XII will focus on villages with high prevalence rates of underweight preschool children.
Data from NNC XII revealed that these villages are in the municipalities of Tulunan, Makilala and Kidapawan City in North Cotabato; Kiamba, Alabel, and Maasim in Sarangani; Lake Sebu, T’boli, and Tantangan in South Cotabato; and Isulan, Esperanza, and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat.
For the search, each Province will identify a specific village as its entry.
Spearheaded by the NNC XII, the evaluation on Sept 18 to second week of October, will be participated by the members of the Nutrition in Development Organization of Social Educators (Nutri-DOSE) in SOCCSKSARGEN, the organized media group as information arm of the council.
Winners will receive various prizes and tokens, including garden tools from the Department of Agriculture, during the regional awarding ceremony on October 26.
Search for best Gulayan sa Barangay is an initiative of the RNC thru NNC to encourage community-level vegetable production in line with the efforts to reduce poverty, hunger and malnutrition.
Aside from the Gulayan sa Barangay, NNC also conducts an annual search for the Best Gulayan sa Opisina among regional line agencies in SOCCSKSARGEN. (SJDuerme-PIA12/Nutri-DOSE)

KORONADAL CITY-The National Nutrition Council XII headed by Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Arceli M. Latonio conducted PPAN Plan Implementation Review (PIR) participated by the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and selected Local Government Units, held on August 23, 2017 at The Farm@Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City.
As noted, the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) provides the framework for the improvement of nutritional status of Filipinos. Periodic assessment of PPAN is vital in order to know whether the planned programs and projects are realized.
The PIR specifically aims to: a) to review PPAN targets vis-à-vis accomplishments of the local nutrition action plan and Regional Nutrition Committee Strategic Action Plan, b) To review action lines/ recommendations in previous PPAN Plan Implementation Review and, c) to identify action lines/ recommendations for the Local Nutrition Committee, Regional Nutrition Committee, NNC Regional Office and NNC Central Office.

Koronadal City—South Cotabato maintained a high score of 90 percent during the national validation of the Evaluation Team led by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) which maintains the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition for the first year towards the National Honor Award journey.
Alona Teo, NNC Nutrition Officer II and team leader, said the score is based on the 60 percent program efficiency and 40 percent program effectiveness.
“We commend the strong support of local chief executives and the legislative body by providing sufficient budgetary allocation for the nutrition program,” Teo stressed out during the exit conference.
The team observed the high level of awareness of committee members, of their roles and responsibilities from the province down at the barangay level. They also noted that there is a deployment of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in every barangay.
Dr. Azucena Dayanghirang, NNC Deputy Executive Director, supported the good partnership of the provincial government with NGOs, business sector, religious groups and people’s organizations.
“The cooperation of all stakeholders means a lot to the government in addressing malnutrition problem in the province. What is good is, you have pulled resources from partners” Dayanghirang said.
Nutripan Bakeries, a joint project of LGU and private partner Mahintana Foundation, scaled up as strategy to address malnutrition among school children.

KORONADAL CITY—Two of the numerous hospitals and organizations in South Cotabato were chosen to present their best practices in the implementation of baby-friendly initiatives during the DOH initiated Breastfeeding Summit held on 29 August 2017 at the Greenleaf Hotel in General Santos city.
Dr. Amebella G. Taruc, OIC-Director III of DOH XII, said more institutions in the region pledged a commitment in support to RA 10028 or known as “Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009” particularly the promotion on the establishment of breastfeeding stations/room/center at the workplace and other public places.
In SOCCSKSARGEN, more hospitals are declared Mother-Baby Hospitals. Dole Philippines, Inc. and Howard Hubbard Hospital are among the institutions in South Cotabato that joined the quality improvement initiative focusing on maternity care practices leading to the Baby-Friendly hospitals and workplaces.
“The best benefit of breastfeeding is the connection and the bonding of mother and child,” Taruc explained.
