KORONADAL CITY— The National Nutrition Council XII in partnership with Region XII BNS Federation Inc., held its first Regional Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ Conference at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center, Koronadal City last November 13-14, 2018, with the theme, “BNS: Bayani ng nutrisyon, noon, ngayon at bukas!”.
A total of 905 BNSs from the four provinces (Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato province) and five cities (Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan, General Santos and Cotabato) in the region had gathered for the 2-day activity.

The National Nutrition Council Region XII spearheaded two batches of Training on Nutrition Program Management for Nutritionist-Dietician HRH under DOH Deployment Program, Municipal and City Nutrition Action Officers and Regional Nutrition Committee Technical Working Group last September 10-14, 2018 and October 8-12, 2018 respectively at Sun City Suites, General Santos City.
The first batch was attended by a total of 24 participants among Nutritionist-Dietitian HRH under DOH Deployment Program of Cotabato Province, South Cotabato, Kidapawan City and General Santos City; Municipal Nutrition Action Officers of Cotabato Province (Midsayap, President Roxas, and Mlang) and South Cotabato (Tampakan and Norala); and City Nutrition Action Officer of General Santos City.

City of Koronadal, South Cotabato – Presidential Proclamation No. 1164, Series of 1998, declares every 4th week of September of every year as Regional Development Council (RDC) Week.
For CY 2018, the RDC week in SOCCSKSARGEN Region was celebrated on September 25, 2018 in Koronadal City and Tantangan, South Cotabato. It started with a motorcade around the city early in the morning, followed by a zumba exercise and friendship games (basketball, volleyball and chess) among the Council’s members from regional line agencies, local government units, and private sector representatives.
One of the highlights of the Celebration was the outreach and feeding of 160 underprivileged and malnourished school-going children of Dumadalig Integrated School and Day Care Centers in Brgy. Dumadalig, Tantangan, South Cotabato. The activity aimed to support the SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Development Plan, 2017-2022, particularly Chapter 10 – Accelerating Human Capital Development.
The feeding program was in partnership with the Region XII Feeding Task Force chaired by the Department of Agriculture (DA) XII and Co-Chaired by Col. Celestino F. Desamito (Ret), the Region XII Offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the National Dairy Authority (NDA) which provided bottled milk to the target school-going children. A ceremonial milk toast was participated in by the children beneficiaries and the RDC XII members to give emphasis on the importance of milk in our diet.

SOCCSKSARGEN- NNC XII recognized the exemplary regional nutrition winners and implementers during the 2018 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony cum Launching of the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition 2019-2022 held on October 25, 2018 at The Farm@Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City.
The awardees were identified through the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and BNS evaluation done earlier this year by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET). Local Government Units (LGUs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) were given recognition for their efficient and effective implementation of nutrition programs.
The event also provided an opportunity to formally launch the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition 2019-2022 which will function as a roadmap in attempting to address and improve the nutrition situation of the region.
The awarding ceremony was graced by almost 260 guests with the presence of Hon. Ma. Theresa Constantino of Municipality of Malungon, Sarangani Province, who delivered the inspirational message being the recipient of Nutrition Honor Award.

Are you eating healthy foods? If not, maybe you’re one of the fast growing numbers of people in South Cotabato who has acquired diabetes, the most common disease associated with food intake nowadays.
So, what makes your plate healthy?
Maria Ana Uy, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer of South Cotabato, said the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) developed a new food guide t promote healthy eating-related habits.
“Ang makasasala nga baba!” (The sinful mouth) Uy jokingly said, pointing the real culprit is the mouth that quickly attacks food without complaining.
She added, “We are what we eat!”
Filipinos are known for their big appetite and because of this, five of the common causes of disease and death in South Cotabato is because of poor diet.
Uy said FNRI produced a visual representation of what an adult Filipino through its Pinggang Pinoy that translates as Filipino Plate.

SOCCSKSARGEN-NNC XII had conducted a consultative workshop on Local Nutrition Early Warning System for Food and Nutrition Security (LNEWS-FNS) last September 24-25, 2018 at Tampakan, South Cotabato and September 26, 2018 at Kiamba, Sarangani Province which were attended by Municipal Nutrition Committee members, LGU officials, and Presidents of the Associations of Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Barangay Health Workers of the municipality.
The LNEWS-FNS is a surveillance system that aims to build capacities of the local officials and workers in collecting, analyzing, reporting and utilizing food security and nutrition data for evidence-based decision making and program planning. Implementation of the system has generated various practical experiences among LGUs. To mention a few these are the following: 1) high level of acceptance by the LGU to the program, 2) active involvement and cooperation of the data collectors and the sentinel barangays, and 3) result of the survey was used in planning.
