Goiter Awareness WeekPeople who lack of the mineral iodine may result in a wide range of conditions or abnormalities which includes goiter, cretinism, hypothyroidism, mental deficiency and or reproductive failures. Iodine deficiency is an important public health issue as it is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation and impaired psychomotor function among young children. It is also the preventable cause of the common disease among Filipinos which is goiter. Hence, Presidential Proclamation 1188 signed on December 11, 2006 declares every 4th week of January of every year as Goiter Awareness Week.

Goiter is the swelling in the neck resulting from an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland due to iodine deficiency. With this year’s theme “Goiter Sugpuin, Isip Patalinuhin, Iodized Salt Gamitin,” the Department of Health, in coordination with partner stakeholders, takes the lead in the dissemination of information and educating the public on the effects of goiter and other iodine deficiency disorders most importantly on pregnant women that may lead to low birth weight and premature delivery.

teens dietThe holiday season is here and the hearts of the people are filled with excitement and joy getting ready for this cheerful festival. The yuletide season is one of the busiest since preparations are already in full swing. Definitely during this times, it is hard to care for oneself with tables full of delicious foods, from appetizers to main dishes to dessert to drinks and we tend to eat a lot which will lead eventually to weight gain. It may be the season filled with tempting high caloric foods but let’s not forget to be healthy and nutritious.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and is something that should be learned at a young age.  Healthy eating during adolescence is important because of accelerated growth rate and changes in body composition including increase in appetite that may affect an individual's nutritional and dietary needs. They also become more independent and heavily influenced by their peers making many food decisions on their own that lack of variety and balance.
