The Celebration of Nutrition Month 2011 in Western Visayas culminated with the Nutrition Congress 2011 – Culmination Program / Recognition and Awarding Ceremony last November 23, 2011 at Crown Ballroom in Punta Villa Resort, Arevalo, Iloilo City. It was well attended by seven hundred nutrition allies and advocates in the region. The participants were welcomed by Director Vicente N. Molejona, Regional Director of POPCOM VI and Chair of the Population, Health and Nutrition (PHN) Sub-Committee. Dr. Ariel I. Valencia, Regional Director of DOH-CHD VI and Chair of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) , gave the Key Message on “Kalusugang Pangkalahatan: Aquino Health Agenda”.

The culmination of the Nutrition Month celebration was spearheaded by the City Health Office of Iloilo last 12 August 2011 at the Robinson’s Place Iloilo. The mall was jam packed with lactating mothers from the barangays of the differentdistricts of the city as well as guests from local governments and non-government organizations like Rising Sun of Iloilo which spearheaded the event in partnership with the CHO. The activity highlighted this year’s Nutrition Month theme which is "Isulong ang Breastfeeding: Tama, Sapat at EKsklusibo!”.
Some of the guests who graced the event were Ms Nona Tad-y, Region VI Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Anthony Redaniel, the MDG-F2030 Field Program Coordinator and Dr. Urminico Baronda, the CHO chief.
The organizers of the event put up booths about breastfeeding, nutrition counseling and photo exhibits of other partner agencies. The CHO also organized some contests about nutrition which included the Tatay and Nanay cook fest, nutri-jingle, the biggest gainer, Nutrisyon Henyo and orally-fit mothers.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC)-6 kicked off the regional Nutrition Month celebration in Jordan, Guimaras yesterday.
The NNC, together with the local government officials of Jordan, launched the “10 Kumainments” and unveiled the standee of the campaign character, Moises Dalisay or “Mang Moi.”
“Mang Moi” is patterned after “Moises” who handed down the 10 Commandments in the Bible.
Nona Tad-y, NNC regional coordinator, said this year’s Nutrition Month celebration stresses the fight not only against undernourishment but also against obesity through proper diet and regular exercise.
The number of obese and overweight persons in the country is increasing while the vegetables and fruit consumption is declining, she said.
Moreover, about 93 percent of Filipinos do not exercise or are not engaged in leisure activities per Food and Nutrition Research Institute survey, she said.
She urged LGUs to lead the Nutrition Month celebration in the provinces, towns, cities, and barangays to encourage more people live a healthy and active lifestyle.

One's health is one’s wealth and like all precious things, it needs to be protected. It is a serious problem that needs urgent attention and action. There should be a growing awareness among the general public of the importance of breastfeeding, healthy lifestyle and good nutrition and how these actions will help eradicate malnutrition, hunger, and even mortality rate in the country. That is why an event like this is pushed by the National Nutrition Council.
Nutri-Talk sa Barangay jumpstarted last 30 July 2011. The first recipient community of the said activity is Barangay Tagbak, Jaro in the City of Iloilo. 48 lactating and pregnant mothers, even fathers and local officials of the said barangay attentively participated in the lecturette given by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y. Different issues were raised by the mothers during the open forum and were addressed also by MDG-F2030 Field Program Coordinator Dr. Anthony Redaniel. DYSI Super-Radyo, the NNC local media partner aired the whole activity live from 9:00-10:00 a.m. for the listening public to be informed about the importance of breastfeeding.

The Department of Interior and Local Government has issued a memo circular directing all local government units from the provincial down to the barangay levels to participate in the celebration of nutrition month.
Dr. Marlyn Convocar, Department of Health-6 Director, said this is a relevant call as the local communities are enjoined to be vigilant about health concerns like good nutrition.
Convocar, who is also the chair of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC), said the circular should be taken seriously by local officials.
Memo Circular 2015-58, signed by DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, says the 41st Nutrition Month Celebration this July carries the theme “Timbang Iwasto, sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo.”
This theme, according to Nona Tad-y, regional nutrition program coordinator, said in the recent RNC meeting, that the theme aims to increase awareness on the role and importance of proper nutrition in the prevention of overweight and obesity among the people.
Further, she said, the theme seeks to encourage Filipinos to make positive decisions on consumption of healthy foods and practicing healthy lifestyle.
“In this, we expect the local officials, the academe and the private sector to put in place an enabling environment that promotes proper nutrition and physical activity,” Tad-y said.

Almost 60 government agencies based in Iloilo and Negros Occidental including the National Nutrition Council (NNC), Region VI joined the 15th Ombudsman Caravan of Government Services (CGS) in Toboso, Negros Occ. last August 18, 2015.
Yearly, the Office of the Ombudsman conducts Caravan of Government Services in different depressed municipalities in the region and NNC, RVI supports and participates the said event. This is a good venue for NNC to extend its advocacy campaign along Promotion of Good Nutrition especially to far flung and nutritionally depressed areas.
