ro6 40th nutritionmonthThe National Nutrition Council (NNC), Region VI ended the month of July celebrating the 2014 Nutrition Month Culmination Program at Punta Villa Resort, Iloilo City. It was attended by Regional Directors, Regional Nutrition Technical Committee members, Nutrition Action Officers, District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators and Barangay Nutrition Scholars around the region.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of the Resolutions which was approved by the body and signed by Regional Dir. Marlyn W. Convocar, M.D., MPH, CESO IV of the Department of Health Region VI also the Chair of Regional Nutrition Committee/Cluster. Ms. Nona B. Tad-y, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, discussed the 2014 Nutrition Month Theme: "Kalamidad paghandaan: Gutom at malnutrisyon agapan!"focusing on nutrition management in emergencies and disasters in the region.

A press conference led by the Western Visayas Nutri-Media Circle was done in regards with the updates on nutrition situation of different provinces and in the region. An election of officers for the Regional Federation of Nutrition Action Officers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars was laso held during this event.

A toast for nutrition concluded the event as a pledge of support to NNC's 40th year celebration and for the coming years. 

ro6 NPMIloilo City- With 30 participants, a Nutrition Program Management Training was conducted by National Nutrition Council (NNC), Region VI at Punta Villa Resort, Iloilo City last August 18-22, 2014. The participants were members of the Municipal Nutrition Committees (MNCs) who composed of Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Municipal Health Officers, Municipal Planning Development Coordinators, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officers, and Municipal Agriculturists of the municipalities of Alimodian, Badiangan, Lambunao, Leon, Sta. Barbara and Tigbauan from the Province of Iloilo, Don Salvador Benedicto and Valladolid of Negros Occidental, as well as Numancia of Aklan.

The five-day training was conducted to enhance the capacity of local nutrition workers to effectively and efficiently manage their local nutrition programs. The set of modules used included how to improve local nutrition committees, formulate action plans, ensure effectiveness and efficiency of plan implementation, monitor progress and evaluate outputs on set targets. Participants undergone through a series of topic discussion and group participation through workshops.

Each participants received a Trainer's Manual on Nutrition Program Management for Local Government Units (LGUs). The Trainer's Manual aims to provide a guide for the local trainers in the conduct of LGU-supported training on NPM. The information contained in the manual is a powerful tool for LGUs to solve malnutrition and hunger within the context of local governance and development.

Evaluation of the training showed that 13 (43.3%) rated excellent and 17 (56.7%) rated very good for the overall outcome of training. Participants expressed appreciation and enhancement of their knowledge, skills and values on managing their local nutrition programs.

As an output, participants submitted a draft of three-year Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP) 2014-2016.

nnc ro6 onwheels DOHThe National Nutrition Council (NNC), Region VI joined the Department of Health (DOH) on Wheels: Kalusugang Pagkalahatan (KP) Roadshow. This festive event was conducted in three selected municipalities in the region included San Joaquin, Iloilo, Culasi, Antique and Malay Aklan last October 27, 29 & 30, 2014 in their respected venues.

This activity was done in collaboration with the attached agencies of DOH and Local Government Units (LGUs) spearheaded by the Undersecretary of Health Janette Loreto-Garin. It aims to render health services for four community members namely: (1) Mother/Pregnant Women; (2) Youth; (3) Men; and (4) Elderly.

During the Audio-Visual Presentation on DOH Priority Programs, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y highlighted the programs and projects of NNC which include the promotion of good nutrition through advocacy campaign of Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. She also enumerated health services rendered by the NNC which is nutrition counselling for four communities emphasizing the Cooking Demonstration done by the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSes). Food demonstrations on the use of easy to prepare recipes were done by the BNSes to encourage mothers to cook indigenous, nutritious and affordable foods in the home. Nutri-Komiks promoting breastfeeding were also distributed to pregnant women.

A video presentation of "Eat My Gulay" developed  by the NNC for Nutrition Month 2012 with the theme, "Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain!" was introduced. This is to promote increased consumption of vegetable to address micronutrient deficiencies and non-communicable diseases. The video was accompanied by a dance number prepared by the BNSes.

RNPC Tad-y also participated in the Policy Forum: Dialogue with Local Chief Executives on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4,5 and 6 to address nutrition-related issues and concerns in each municipality.

ro6 Federeation officersNational Nutrition Council (NNC) Region VI held a Joint Regional Federation Meeting of Provincial/ City Nutrition Action Officers, District/ City Nutrition Program Coordinators and Barangay Nutrition Scholars on September 16, 2014 at Gloria Maris Hall, Punta Villa, Iloilo City.

Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y led the meeting and discussed agenda regarding FNRI Regional Dissemination Forum on the 8th National Nutrition Survey, upcoming Nutrition Action Officers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars Conferences, National and Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremonies, Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for BNS and Model Barangays with IYCF Community Support, BNS matters and Approved Resolutions.

Attended by 50 participants coming from the 6 provinces and 13 cities, issues and concerns with regards to updates in the local government nutrition programs were addressed and had actions requested. 

nnc nutrition awardeeNational Nutrition Council (NNC), Region VI gave away decorated "kulons" to give recognition to Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSes) and municipalities who joined in the Search for Regional Outstanding BNS and Green Banner Award during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) on November 7, 2014 at Punta Villa Resort, Iloilo City.

On its second year, awardees received a "KULON" as a meaningful part during awarding for it is a legacy with RNPC Nona Tad-y. It stands for "Kami Ugyon Lab-uton ang Outstanding sa Nutrisyon". It is not only given as an award but as a symbol of participatory and collaborative efforts of Local Government Units (LGUs) to achieve outstanding performance in nutrition.

Ms. Ofelia Bajin from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental is the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar. Ten BNSes from the cities of Victorias, Talisay, Cadiz, Bago, Sipalay, Passi, Silay, San Carlos, Iloilo and Kabankalan, another five BNSes from the provinces of Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Aklan and Antique were awarded as Oustanding BNSes.

The 2013 Outstanding Municipality in the Region was awarded to Numancia, Aklan and its barangays who participated during the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI). Municipalities of Sibalom, Antique and E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental were the Municipal Green Banner Awardees. Also, Isabela of Negros Occidental was appreciated for participating in the said evaluation.

An oath taking of the newly elected Regional Federation of Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSes) was also a part of the program. Words of gratitude and inspiration to continue to support the nutrition programs in the region from RNPC Tad-y concluded the program.

nnc ro6 8thnnsIloilo City - September 19, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) Regional Dissemination Forum on the 8th National Nutrition Survey for Region 6 took place at Sarabia Manor Hotel. It was participated by the Regional Development Council (RDC), Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) from different provinces, cities and municipalities covered by the survey and representatives from Non- Government Organizations (NGOs) in the region. With the theme "Juan Mission for a Well-Nourished Nation", the forum aims to update key stakeholders in the government and private sectors involved in food, nutrition and health programs on the initial results of the survey and to provide a venue for inquiries and sharing of experience and recommendations of possible action points for application of the results in local policy-making and program planning.

Words from Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, CESO III, Regional Director of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 6, commenced the program. The floor was then taken by Ms. Charmaine Duante, Supervising Science Research Specialist, Ms. Ma. Lilibeth Dasco, Senior Science Research Specialist, and Mr. Marlon Balitaon, Science Research Specialist I, to present the background and overview of the 8th NNS, nutritional status (national and regional) and selected government nutrition interventions for the different age groups, respectively.

Interactive session by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y addressed concerns and issues which also concluded the forum.
