ro6 bns totThe Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholar enhanced the capability of the Nutrition Action Officers and Coordinators at the provincial, municipal and city to train the Barangay Nutrition Scholars deployed in the barangay level. The activity was conducted with the technical assistance from U.P. Los Baños as Resource Persons on 14-18, Ocober 2013 at Eon Centennial Plaza Hotel, Iloilo City. It was attended by 30 Provincial/Municipal/City Nutrition Action Officers/coordinators from the 25 municipalities/cities and 5 provinces in Region VI.

ro6 rtc meetingThe National Nutrition Council Region VI  coordinated and facilitated the emergency regional tri-cluster on health, nutrition and WASH meeting  with Inter Agency Standing Committee ( ISAC) last November 26, 2013 in Roxas City. The meeting aimed to update and assess the areas affected by typhoon Yolanda in the region.

This was led by DOH-CHD VI OIC-Regional Director Marlyn W. Convocar, who is also the Chairperson of the Regional Nutrition Committee/Cluster in Region VI.  It was attended by DOH-CHD 6, NNC VI Provincial Health Officers, Provincial Nutrition Action Officers and the representatives of the 11International Agency Standing Committee (IASC) clusters based in Roxas City Hub.  These clusters are: 1) Agriculture- FAO; 2) Camp coordination/management- UNHCR/IOM; 3) Early recovery- UNDP; 4) Education- UNICEF; 5) Emergency shelter- UNHCR/IFRC; 6) Emergency telecommunications- OCHA/UNICEF/WFP; 7) Health- WHO; 8) Logistics- WFP; 9) Nutrition- UNICEF; 10)Protection- UNHCR and UNICEF; 11) Water sanitation hygiene- UNICEF.

ro6 BNSF AntiqueThe Province of Antique held the election of Provincial Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) Federation officers during its meeting on May 20, 2014 at San Jose, Antique. Present during the meeting was Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y.

The election was presided by Mr. Harry A. Alamis, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) assisted by Ms. Jocelyn Morano, District Nutrition Program Coordinator (DNPC). Participants are BNS presidents in the municipalities of Pandan, Laua-an, Tibiao, Bugasong, Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, Sibalom, Libertad, Barbaza, Patnongon, Valderrama, Anini-y, San Remigio, Belison, Patnongon and San Jose. BNS presidents of municipalities of Culasi and Caluya failed to come.

The newly elected officers took are Mrs. Jemma Bacongallo, BNS President of San Jose, Antique as President.

ro6 DNPC MeetingThe regional association of District/City Program Coordinators in Western Visayas  is set to be organized following the need to update list of officers and members and some changes in the local government units.

Ms. Nona Tad-y Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator said the updated list of officers have to be submitted to the District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators Association of the Philippines (D/CNPCAP), as requested during its 4th National Convention in October last year.

It was observed that some D/CPNCs were not designated by the local chief executives but still sit as such, and there are those who were not trained or oriented on their roles and functions.

Ms. Noniza Lozada, DNPC of Iloilo said that there is need for these D/CNPCs to undergo necessary trainings or orientation to become more aware of their responsibilities.

On the other hand, Ms. Crescini Roxas, DNPC of Aklan and a member of the Board of Directors of D/CNPCAP said that the D/CNPCs should actively participate in nutrition-related programs and should be dedicated to their tasks.

RNPC Tad-y said that those who are not yet designated should remind their mayors and that all the D/CNPCs in the region should be re-oriented on their roles.

The group present during the D/CNPCs meeting last February 14, agreed that an election of officers will be conducted during the next meeting and full attendance should be ensured.

ro6 40th nutritionmonthThe National Nutrition Council (NNC), Region VI launched Nutrition Month (NM) 2014 celebration with a theme, “Kalamidad paghandaan: Gutom at malnutrisyon agapan!” on July 7, 2014 at the Municipality of Tapaz, Capiz. This activity was in tie up with the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) of Tapaz, Provincial Health Office of Capiz and Child Fund.

Highlight of the event was the unveiling of NUTRI Tarp led by Hon. Rosemarie F. Gardose, Tapaz Municipal Mayor and MNC Chair together with the Regional Nutrition Cluster members and MNC members. The unveiling served as a manifestation of giving awareness to stakeholders as partners on celebrating nutrition month in support to nutrition programs and projects as Mayor Gardose said on her speech.

Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y delivered her message highlighting this year’s NM theme which coincidentally suited to Yolanda incident last year. Yolanda case made people realized that nutritional problem begin to appear after calamity when assessment is done using the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC taking). Findings during the assessment serve as basis for response strategies to address identified nutritional problem.

She also stressed that Tapaz is second (2nd) nutritionally depressed municipality in the region with a double digit figure of 13.8%  prevalence rate of undernutrition. It is important that proper nutrition should be lived in everyday lives of Tapaznon. 

ro6 NETThe Municipality of Jordan, Guimaras is steps closer to Nutrition Honor Award (NHA), the highest award bestowed by the National Nutrition Council for municipalities after being awarded as Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) for three consecutive years.

The municipality has been evaluated for its 1st year CROWN Maintenance Award by the National Evaluation Team (NET) headed by Ms. Jomarie L. Tongol, NO II, together with Ms. Ma. Katrina A. Demetrio, NO II of NNC CO and Ms. Camille F. Rivera, Economic Development Specialist, NEDA, Pasig City last April 8-11, 2014.

The NET conducted Desk review with Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) where Jordan presented its nutrition program entitled, “A Journey to a Malnourished-free Jordan”. Ms. Tongol, reminded the MNC members that the measure of evaluation is by outshining its performance for the past three years with at least 90% rate to be able to get the 1st year maintenance award.

Three randomly selected barangays in the municipality were visited as part of the evaluation. It included Brgy. Espinosa with lowest prevalence rate of undernutrition, Brgy. Morobuan which got the highest rate and Brgy. Poblacion which was the only lowland barangay in the median scale.

The team weighed 10% of the total pre-school children in each barangay including the identified underweight and severely underweight pre-school children based on the data provided from the Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus Report. They also had the desk review with Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) by interviewing the members and validating the data.

Feedbacking with MNC and BNC members was the highlight of the evaluation. NET summarized their observations on a presentation of program effectiveness by showing the impacts on change in nutritional status of preschool children weighed at sampled barangays. They also presented their findings in terms of the presence of functional nutrition committees in the municipality, nutrition planning, strategies and interventions, documentation, and monitoring and evaluation.

Recommendations were given by the evaluators to improve the performance of MNC and BNC members along the implementation of nutrition program and projects

Hon. Cresente P. Chavez, Jr., Municipal Mayor and MNC Chair, Vice Mayor Ruben Corpuz and Dr. N.L. Cathrel A. Nava, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer and Municipal Health Officer accepted the challenge.
