Cebu City – Sarah choked before she could answer a mother who asked if compared to other cities, Cebu City had the highest incidence of malnourished children. Deep inside her, she really did not know.
Though the standing of the city is not Sarah’s direct concern, it would be good for her to know how the other cities were able to bring down the underweight prevalence and find out which strategies are applicable to the peculiarity of their situation.
On November 7, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) converge for their eighth regional congress. In what they call, “Strength in Unity: Reaching Nutrition Heights Together,” barangay nutrition scholars expect to see different scenarios in how stunting, underweight and wasted concerns were diagnosed, addressed, treated or may continue to be a gnawing concern. A BNS, by virtue of Presidential Decree 1569, is a barangay-based nutrition volunteer tasked to care for the malnourished of the barangay, mobilize the community to improve its nutrition situation and link services to the vulnerable groups of the community. The BNS is also a member of the Barangay Nutrition Committee and the Community Health Team.
The National Nutrition Council Region VII thru the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association of Region 7(FeBaNuSA 7, Inc), the regional federation of BNSs is holding the event at the Summit Circle Cebu, Fuente Osmeña Circle, Cebu City. The 8th Regional Congress aims to: 1) provide BNSs with updates on current nutrition situation and other program concerns; 2) provide a venue for the BNSs to convene into a general assembly to discuss the various concerns of the regional federation; 3) show off the wit and talents of some BNS thru the conduct of Mutya ng BNS; and 4) strengthen the camaraderie among the BNSs.
Among those who will deliver messages during the congress are Hon. Pablo John F. Garcia, Representative of the 3rd District of Cebu Province, Hon. Cynthia A. Villar, Representative of the Lone District of Las Piñas, giving the Keynote Address is Hon. Riza Q. Honteveros, Chairperson of the Akbayan-Citizens Action Party.
For the technical session, NNC 7’s NO III, Ms. Susan Y. Orpilla will talk about “The Nutrition Situation in the Region and the Role of BNS”; DOH – CHD 7’s Health Education and Promotion Officer Ms. Ma. Ligaya I. Moneva will talk about “Caring Practices for Infant and Young Children” and DA – 7’s Technical Expert in Vegetable Production Mr. Cristito L. Mangadlao about “Food Security at the Household Level, What BNS can do”.
FeBaNuSA 7 President, Ma. Luisa G. Delantar would be giving the President’s Report in front of the whole BNS while Treasurer Ms. Lucia C. Arellano would also give her Treasurer’s Report. //DFB

Cebu City – One of the major events in Cebu is theSinulog. This is a nine-day fiesta celebration in honor of Sto. Nino. The celebration entails two major activities: the religious procession on a Saturday and the grand street parade the following day. Organized by the Augustinian order, the solemn procession in honor of the Child Jesus is basically the same manner as of the other religious processions. Held every third Sunday of January, the yearly tradition brings in flocks of devotees and visitors. Before the actual day of celebration, novena masses are done daily for nine days to honor the Sto. Niño. This is culminated with a solemn procession. The devotees will brave the rain or sun to express their deep sense of devotion to the Holy Child.

Cebu City – Barangay Nutrition Scholars who excelled in their respective LGUs were recognized for their exemplary work as a Barangay Nutrition Scholars last 03 August 2012 during the 8th Regional Nutrition Action Officers and 2012 Grand Nutrition Awards.
By virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1569, a Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) is a barangay-based nutrition volunteer tasked to care for the malnourished of the barangay, mobilize the community to improve its nutrition situation and link services to the vulnerable groups of the community.
The following City Outstanding BNSs were recognized for the excellent work and commendable actions in reducing the malnutrition rate in their respective barangays and in creation of sustainable projects that would in one way or the other uplift the nutritional aspect of the family.
The City Outstanding BNSs that were awarded were Ms. Lanilyn R. Orlina of Brgy.Moton, Dumaguete City; Ms. Windlyina S. Entero of Brgy. Tuburan Sur, Danao City; Ms. Susan D. Cortes of Brgy. Sto. Niño, Tanjay City and Ms. Jocelyn T. Brazon, Brgy. Calong-calong, Toledo City. Each City Outstanding BNS received City Outstanding BNS Award and a cash prize worth Php 3,000.00.

Cebu City – The Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Central Visayas met on November 7, 2012 to celebrate their charter. Born on November 7, 2004, the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association in Region VII, Incorporated (FeBaNuSA 7, Inc.) commemorate its 8thyear of existence thru a Congress themed “Strength in Unity: Reaching Nutrition Heights Together”.
This year’s congress, co-sponsored by the Provincial Government of Cebu was held at Summit Circle Cebu near the famous FuenteOsmeña Circle. Close to 700 BNSs regionwide attended the event. Some of the guests included Barangay Captains, Councilors & Chairpersons, Committee on Health, a mayor, MNAOs and D/CNPCs.
Serving as the Keynote Speaker was Hon. Risa Q. Hontiveros, Chairperson of AkbayanPartylist who elaborated on the theme and the role BNSs play in improving the nutritional well-being of the Filipino children, who are the hope of the future. Congressman Pablo John F. Garcia of the 3rd District of Cebu Province in his opening remarks vowed to support the BNS and committed to continue the nutrition efforts of the province. Congresswoman Cynthia A. Villar of the Lone District of Las Piñas wasn’t able to join the event. Her representative, Ms. Myra LymGilig delivered her inspirational message. Other personalities in attendance were Cebu Provincial Health Officer and Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Cristina B. Giango.

Cebu City – Mrs. Christie L. Renoblas of Barangay Buenos Aires, Tubigon, Bohol bested all the other 16 provincial and City Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars and won the much coveted Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar award. Her efforts were recognized during the 8th Regional NAO Congress and 2012 Grand Nutrition Awards held on 03 August at the City Sports Club Cebu, Cebu Business Park, Cebu City. She received the ROBNS trophy and a cash award worth Php 12,000.00.
A Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) is a barangay-based nutrition volunteer tasked to care for the malnourished of the barangay, mobilize the community to improve its nutrition situation and link services to the vulnerable groups of the community. The BNS is also a member of the Barangay Nutrition Committee and the Community Health Team. The Search for the Regional Outstanding BNS is done by the inter-agency Regional Evaluation Team that aims to assess the performance of the BNS and recognize those with exemplary performance in the delivery of basic nutrition and related services in his/her barangay.
By religiously doing her responsibilities like monitoring the weight of children, nutrition counselling and assisting in activities in the barangay health station, Ms. Renoblas’ wish of zero malnutrition in her barangay became a reality. Backed by Buenos Aires Barangay Nutrition Committee and the strong support from the Barangay Chief Executive, she was able to initiate Pig Dispersal project, Palayan sa Nutrisyon and establishment of the BNC Garden.
Because of Ms. Renoblas’ actions and the BNC’s support, there has been no incidence of underweight and overweight among pre-school and school children in her barangay. Her strategies were active campaigning for exclusive breastfeeding for children 0-6 months old and appropriate complementary feeding after 6 months while continuing breastfeeding, enthusiastic conduct of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon among mothers, consciously steering caregivers for good caring practices and strong drive among families for planting vegetables in their own backyards.
Ms. Renoblas hopes to continue to regularly monitor the nutritional status of the children in her barangay especially those nearing the borderline and give immediate and appropriate intervention and serve truthfully the citizens of Barangay Buenos Aires to maintain the zero incidence of malnutrition in her barangay. // DFB

Cebu City – The Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7, the media partner of the National Nutrition Council 7, had their 2011 Year End Assessment and 2012 Planning Session last December 16, 2011 at the Rajah Park Hotel, Cebu City. The activity also served as their Christmas Party.
The officers and the members of MIND 7 joined together in the Assessment and Planning Session. The following officers were present: Mr. Jun Tagalog, DYLA/President;Ms. Yolanda Gendrauli, ABC 5/VP for TV; Ms. Marie Mignon Nillama, DPWH 7/VP for IOs; Ms. Anabelle Lagrosas, DYMR/VP for Radio; Mr. Vernon Joseph Go, CBSi/VP for Social Media; Ms. Daday Melgar, DYRF/Treasurer and Mr. John Ciocon, Amazing Cebu TV/Auditor.
