Cebu City – Nowadays, salts are accessible at any sari-sari store in our neighborhood. However, not all of these types of stores sell iodized salt especially in areas where sources of iodine fortified salts are limited.
But a sari-sari store, also known as community sundry store, can be a good “go to” area for residents to have access to this essential mineral. As a one stop shop providing locals with everything from daily food necessities to cleaning supplies, iodized salt can be one of them. The word sari-sari is a Tagalog term meaning "variety" or "sundry". Such stores occupy an important economic and social location in a Filipino community and are pervasive in localities and along streets.

Cebu City - The National Nutrition Council Region VII continues its Salt Iodization Program advocacy using social media platform. The social media activity aims to raise awareness to the netizen on the importance of using quality iodized salt to battle iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) that has become a major nutrition problem in the Philippines. According to the 2013 National Nutrition Survey, 5.8 million Filipinos were afflicted with thyroid disorders. If untreated, these disorders could lead to detrimental reduction of intellectual and physical capacity. These are manifested as goiter, thyroid malignancy, mental deficiency, physical deformities, congenital hypothyroidism, stunting, reproductive failure, and even death among susceptible individuals.

Cebu Province – Mothers play a critical role in the growth and development of children. This Mother’s Day which is celebrated across more than 46 countries in the world, we salute all mothers especially in their care of children in the First 1000 Days of their children’s lives.
First 1000 Days is the time between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s second birthday of which is a very crucial time of an infant’s life wherein foundations for optimum health and development across the lifespan are established. It is also commonly known as the window of opportunity because it is in this timeframe that we can correct any health issues of the baby specifically poor nutritional status. The right nutrition and care during the 1000-day window influences not only whether the child will survive, but also his or her ability to grow and learn. Hence, the mother plays a significant role to the well-being of the developing infant.

Cebu City - “Breast-feed infants exclusively from birth to 6 months, and then, give appropriate foods while continuing breast-feeding.” A message in Kumainment No 2 that has been repeated, year after year. We all know the benefits of breastfeeding like, how it can reduce the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Breastfeeding also helps the baby against some short- and long-term illnesses. The mother’s breastmilk shares antibodies from the mother with her baby wherein these antibodies will help her baby develop a strong immune system and protect them from diseases. Most importantly, breastfeeding is the best way for the babies to obtain optimal nutrition.

Cebu City - Cebu Doctors’ University - Department of Nutrition and Dietetics under the College of Arts and Sciences band with National Nutrition Council Region VII for their Public Health Nutrition Internship.
As issues pertaining to public health nutrition become increasingly complex, especially a need of Nutrition Officers in the different Local Government Units; those who wish to enter this field must need the basic education and experience to meet the challenges. Public health nutrition internships are a great venue to gain work experience, learn new skills and hone the knowledge they have gained during theoretical classes. This internship will have the potential to influence the course of students’ post-academic careers in public health and will potentially lead them to future employment opportunities.
