Naga City – Recognizing the valuable role of Barangay Nutrition Scholars especially during the time of the pandemic, the City of Naga, Cebu capacitated their nutrition heroes on the Basic Course for BNS. The training was held on 16 – 18 March 2022 at Tubod Flowing Water Resort, Minglanilla, Cebu. There were 30 Barangay Nutrition Scholars who attended the training with the new City Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Jasmine G. Genegobis, RND and former CNPC, Ms. Floramay Labalan with the support of the City Nutrition Action Officer, Dr. Camille F. Peñalosa.

San Jose, Negros Oriental – Women plays a vital role in every child’s nutrition. Mother’s nutritional status before pregnancy up to child’s second birthday and her knowledge to nutrition greatly affects child’s growth and development. One of the keys that could prevent malnutrition is to ensure that mothers receive healthy diets and adequate services especially during the 1st 1000 days in which they are nutritionally vulnerable at most.
Women needs to consume nutritious diet during pre-conception to prepare and ensure adequate reserves for pregnancy. Energy and nutrient requirements significantly rise during pregnancy, thus, meeting the nutritional needs of women are essential and fundamental for their health and child in the womb throughout early childhood.

Bohol Province - Menstruation that every woman experiences monthly is her body’s preparation for a future pregnancy. It is important that women during their menstrual cycle period would have proper nutrition.
The dietary requirements of a woman during this period are similar with that of her non-menstruating days except for iron. This is because iron is needed to replace the iron lost during menstrual periods esp in women with abnormally heavy or prolonged bleeding. Studies have shown that approximately 10% of women lose more than 1.4 mg of iron per day through menstrual bleeding.

Bindoy, Negros Oriental – The Municipal Nutrition Committee of this coastal town in Negros oriental trained their newly-hired Barangay Nutrition Scholars. All 23 frontline nutrition workers underwent a 3-day training on the Basic Course for BNS. The training team was composed of ND DNPC Antonieta Delfino of Negros province, and ND II Chutsvieka May Pacatang of DOH CV CHD/NNC 7.
MHO/MNAO Dr. Estela Tuse gave her welcome message on the 1st day. She said, “With the challenges faced last year, I am very grateful that the Basic Course Training is finally happening, and we already have a new set of BNS this time. Right after Dr. Tuse’s message, the training session commenced. The legal mandate and rationale of the BNS Program, recruitment, selection and hiring of BNS as well as its benefits, skills needed, roles, & functions of the BNS, and understanding of food and nutrition concepts were discussed.
