Iodized Salt

Cebu City – Republic Act 8172 or known as ASIN Law requires all producers/manufacturers of food-grade salt to iodize the salt that they produce, manufacture, import, trade or distribute as part of reducing the risk of micronutrient deficiency in the county specifically the ongoing problem of iodine deficiency disorders through the sale and distribution use of iodized salt.

To ensure its compliance, the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force 7 (RBATF 7) together with the NNC 7 Secretariat is conducting semi-annual monitoring of the largest salt producers in the region as well as visiting select food establishments to ensure that the law is followed.

Visita Iglesia 2.0

Cebu City - The National Nutrition Council Region VII observed Holy Week with a Visita Iglesia and visited seven parishes in Metro Cebu on 12 April 2022.

Visita Iglesia is a yearly pilgrimage that Filipino Catholics religiously make and NNC 7 was blessed to be able to participate in that pilgrimage. The group went to seven churches, the choice of seven as the number of churches to visit was described by many Catholics as a reference to the Seven Last Words of Jesus or the Seven Holy Wounds of Jesus.

The NNC 7 official and staff started their Visita Iglesia in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Guadalupe, Cebu City and was led by AA VI Eula Mayol and BNS Coordinator Lucy Arellano. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is known to be the official patroness of Cebu City, although many presume that it is the Sto. Niño for whom the annual Sinulog is being celebrated. The “debate on the technicality” of the Santo Niño being referred to as patron saint surfaced on the premise that “the Holy Child is a representation of Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity and therefore, he cannot, as God, be considered a patron.” Last 2002, the late Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal declared the Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu as the patroness of Cebu. Today, the Our Lady of Guadalupe stands a holy representation and significant embodiment of the people’s faith tantamount to the blessings they are receiving.

Binignit

Cebu City - Have you come to think of why we always associate Holy Week meal with binignit. What does this snack have to do with this Great Week and why do Visayan mothers love to prepare this snack every Lenten season?

Binignit is a Cebuano dessert-snack that is like Luzon’s version of ginataan halo-halo and bilo-bilo. This dish is traditionally made with glutinous rice or pilit which adds greater texture to the stew and gives it a distinctive taste cooked in coconut milk with various slices of sabá bananas, taro, and sweet potato, among other ingredients. Among the Visayan people, the dish is traditionally served during Good Friday of Holy Week.
