What is thyroid and how does it work in our body? The thyroid gland is a tiny, butterfly-shaped gland that is situated in the front of the neck, right below the voice box (larynx). Glands are organs in the body that regulate or produce hormones for body processes. The main job of the thyroid is to control the metabolism of our body.

A healthy thyroid function properly. It continuously produces different hormones, releases them, and then produces new hormones to replace those that have been used by our body’s cells. The thyroid tells how much energy our body needs. Additionally, these hormones control the heart rate and temperature of the body. The thyroid gland keeps all your body's systems in check and your metabolism running smoothly. When there is decreased (hypothyroidism) or increased (hyperthyroidism) of thyroid hormones in the blood the entire body is affected.

January2023 BreakfastMaria, Siquijor - Breakfast is the first meal of the day typically eaten in the morning.   But just how important breakfast is? We have likely heard over and over about reasons why we need to eat breakfast.

Did you know that the body’s source of energy is glucose? The carbohydrates you eat are broken down into glucose which is the main source of energy for your body’s cells, tissues, and organs. Glucose is stored in the liver. During nighttime even while we are sleeping and in fasting mode, our body continues to work, and the liver releases the stored energy needed for the growth and repair of the body throughout the night. This brings the glucose level down.

January2023 ASINLaw Siquijor FINALSiquijor, Siquijor - With the celebration of Goiter Awareness Week this last week of January, the Provincial Nutrition Committee of Siquijor considers it as a great opportunity to raise awareness and educate the people of this mystic island on the significance of using iodized salt in the prevention of goiter and other Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). Anchored on this year’s theme “Leeg Kapain, Goiter Sugpuin: Isip ay Patalinuhin, Iodized Salt ay Gamitin”, they highlighted the importance of iodine in the mental development of the child, especially in the First 1000 Days and bolster the implementation of the Republic Act No. 8172 “An Act Promoting Salt Iodization Nationwide or the ASIN Law in the province.

RA No. 8172 was signed into law by former President Fidel V. Ramos in 1995, which “aims to promote the use of iodized salt to address the lack of micronutrients in the country. It also requires all salt manufacturers to iodize the salts they produce and distribute.”

Salt iodization is the country’s countermeasure to address and ultimately eradicate IDD among the most vulnerable groups of the community: women and children.
