Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental – The barangay health and nutrition workers in Barangay Calango and all the other barangays of Zamboanguita are busy preparing for the upcoming monitoring and evaluation of the local level plan implementation (MELLPI) Pro to be conducted by the Negros Oriental Provincial Nutrition Evaluation Team (PNET). The PNET is set to visit the municipality on 25 January 2023.
Documents including the Municipal and Barangay Nutrition Action Plans, FSHIS reports, OPT+ data, nutrition data of school children, local policies, information on the delivery of nutrition service such as micronutrient supplementation, food fortification dietary supplementation, Pabasa sa Nutrition, etc. are piled up for evaluation. The municipal and barangay officials and health center personnel pitch in to make their municipal nutrition office and/or barangay nutrition corner ready and presentable for the evaluators.

It is defined as a very low weight for height (below -3 z scores of the median WHO growth standards), by visible severe wasting, or by the presence of nutritional oedema. But how can we prevent death to children caused by SAM?
Early detection using the Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape is one of the key factors in addressing severe acute malnutrition. According to the National Nutrition Council, “MUAC tape is a simple plastic tape used in determining the thinness to weight-for-height of a child through measuring of the circumference of an individual’s left upper arm between the tip of the shoulder and the tip of the elbow”.
