January2023 waste managementCebu City – After the bright festivities that transpired in the last month, we somehow always find our trash bins brimming with wastes from Christmas decorations, PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles from all the drinking, disposable food packaging or containers, and not to mention– food leftovers.

January has been declared as the National Zero Waste Month, through Proclamation No. 760 pursuant to the Republic Act (RA) 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. This was made by our former President of the Philippines, the late Benigno S. Aquino III. Zero Waste as an advocacy was created with the hopes of encouraging the Filipino people to become more environmentally aware and make sustainable actions in lessening the volume of waste produced every day.

January2023 BNS MentoringDanao City – As leaders of their respective local associations, Barangay Nutrition Scholar presidents from provinces and cities in Central Visayas are expected to lead by example, one of which is being able to get an award as an outstanding barangay nutrition scholar.

Thus, born the idea of BNSs president mentoring activity during the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ Association (FeBaNuSA) 7 Inc. 4th Q meeting held on 01-02 December 2023 at the Danao Intosan Resort, Danao City.  

January2023 HydrationCebu City – Sinulog Festival, one of the most celebrated religious festivals in the Philippines, held every third Sunday of January, in Cebu City. This year, the long week celebration started last 5 January 2023, with the Walk with Jesus at Basilica del Sto. Niño followed with the Opening Salvo Mass. Mostly, the activities involved are crowd gathering which includes religious masses, fluvial parade, trade fairs, pilgrimage, street and night parties.

These enjoyable activities come with a health and nutrition risk. The long walks during the street parade, pilgrimage, and the energy exhausted in the night parties utilizes body energy, thus the need to replenish the fluid and electrolyte loss. So, from the devotee of the Sr. Sto. Niño, to the younger generations who choose to join the parties, a reminder from the National Nutrition Council Region VII: keep yourself hydrated out there!

January2023 NNC7 PIRCebu City - In-charge of the management of nutrition program in Central Visayas and as the secretariat to the Regional Nutrition Committee, the National Nutrition Council Region VII lead by Dr. Parolita A. Mission conducted their annual Program Implementation Review (PIR) for 2022 and the 2023 planning of the regional office. Part of its internal management operations, the activity was held on 9th to 10th of January 2023 at the Golden Valley Hotel, Cebu City.

The session on the first day was an in-depth discussion on the review of the 2022 work and financial plan accomplishments of the different desk of the regional office, that included nutrition surveillance, nutrition policy and planning, nutrition information education, Tutok Kainan Supplementation Program, and the administration & finance. The review also covered the rating of overall quality, timeliness, and efficiency of the different programs, projects, and activities (PPAs) initiated by the team. Insights of the different hindering factors, facilitating factors and recommendations of the sighted strengths and weaknesses of PPAs implemented were also tackled including good practices that can be continued in 2023.
