burnI am James Aaron Perez, a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian and burn survivor.

In March 2016, that one pitfall morning during a Community Nutrition Outreach Program, my life was changed forever. I received second- to third-degree burns that affected 15 percent of my total body surface area due to a car radiator accident. I had skin grafts on my abdomen, on my back, and on both of my arms. It was the worst pain in my life that I have ever felt.

Accidents can happen around the world every day, but unfortunately, that’s how life works sometimes. I hope through this article it will help those who have experienced similar physical and emotional distress and know what to do nutritionally when someone had burned.

For me to heal, it takes a lot of energy. I had to increase my caloric intake than my usual-normal food intake. That is why Nutrition for me was a major component during my burn treatment.

When we are healing from burns, we must get the proper nutrition that we need. An adequate diet can reduce the damaging loss of lean body mass during burns. We may lose too much weight, our immune system may be compromised and healing process will slow down if we don’t get the proper nutrition.

Smoking

Cebu City -- The lungs are one of the integral organs in our body. It keeps us alive and breathing. A lot of times the things we do daily can overdo or maybe exhaust our lungs so keeping our lungs healthy is very important. The body already has its natural defense to keep germs, bacteria, and dirt at bay.

There are things you can do to help your body in maintaining a healthy lung, so here are three tips to guide you.

TIP #1: Avoid smoking.

In smoking cigarette whether it is tobacco or e-cigarette, keep it in mind that that you are giving your lungs a foreign substance that it is not accustomed to. Smoking has been the major cause of lung cancer and chronic pulmonary diseases (COPD) like emphysema and bronchitis. The smoke you are giving to your lungs narrows the air passages where it can be inflamed therefore breathing can be difficult. It can also cause tissue damages to the lungs which can grow into cancer.

AIP workshop news

Cebu City -- With the opportunities provided by the increased local government revenues brought by the Mandanas-Garcia ruling, the annual AIP Workshops for Nutrition that was organized by the National Nutrition Council Region VII has included a special workshop on the inclusion of nutrition in LGU’s devolution transition plan (DTP).

With 32 local government units (LGUs) from all over Central Visayas as attendees, the week-long blended workshops conducted on 18-25 October 2021 has not only produced nutrition inputs for the LGU’s respective 2022 Annual Investment Programs (AIPs) but also inputs to their devolution transition plans as well.

Focusing on ensuring that nutrition is well supported and funded in the predictably busy election year next year, the programs, projects, and activities included in the AIP had been more focused on sustaining investments to the nutrition program.
