Cebu City - Filipino’s main staple is rice. Most of the time white rice is consumed and paired with different viands every mealtime with the different varieties of rice sold in the market whether white rice, brown rice, red rice, and black rice.
In Chinese culture, black rice is called as the ‘Forbidden Rice’ since it became a property for rich families or royalties in China. But now black rice is already available to everyone. Black rice is not commonly consumed by Filipinos compared to the brown or red rice variety, since it is not commonly cultivated by our farmers.

Cebu City—The Regional Nutrition Committee secretariat noted compliance of some LGUs of the RNC Resolution No. 021-03 (s.2021) entitled the “Strengthening the LGU Nutrition Program Through the Establishment of Nutrition Office at the Provincial. City, Municipal Levels and Hiring of LGU Full Time Personnel for Nutrition and Inclusion of the Same in LGUs’ Devolution Transition Plan”.
This was observed during the presentation of LGU updates during the 2nd Regional Management Conference s 2021 held very recently. The same observation was also noted in the 2021 report of accomplishments submitted by LGUs to the regional office.
The Local Chief Executives thru the Nutrition Action Officers of the different areas of Central Visayas are encouraged to increase their nutrition budget with the financial windfall brought about by the Mandanas-Garcia Supreme Court ruling by investing in key program, projects and activities targeting nutritionally at-risk children and pregnant women.

Bais City – The city’s nutrition program received financial boost after an additional funding of P 206,100.00 from the Bayanihan Grant and P 400,000.00 from the GAD Fund were appropriated to the program. The funds were used to purchase Lipid-Based Nutritional Supplements in Small Quantity (LNS-SQ), Enov Mum and Nutri-Butter.
The Bayanihan grant was made possible with the passage of Executive Order No. 021-2020 that also created the Bais City COVID-19 Incident Command System (ICS). The COVID-19 ICS is composed of several members including the City Nutrition Council that made sure nutrition program is always one of its priorities and nutrition packages will be available during the pandemic.
LNS-SQ are supplements designed to prevent undernutrition and promote health and development for 6-24 months preschoolers, pregnant and lactating women. Enov Mum helps prevent delivery of low-birth-weight infants, which reduces the risk of undernutrition while the Nutri-Butter improves preschoolers’ weight, especially those who are identified as severely underweight and moderately wasted.

Cebu City—The National Nutrition Council Region VII held a simple Christmas virtual gathering during the tail end of the 2nd day of the 2nd Regional Management Conference held on 03 December 2021. Despite the trials that the COVID-19 pandemic brought upon, the spirit of Christmas is still present and ever burning in the hearts of every Filipinos without forgetting the true reason of the celebration. Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. His birth is characterized by simplicity. Baby Jesus was born in a manger with only his mother and father. His guests were a shepherd, a few animals and the three kings.
During the simple and quick Christmas activity, the members of the Regional ManCon garbed in red apparels, headdresses and masks were filled with dopamine or what we know as the ‘happy hormone’ despite their busy and hectic schedules. Some participants were stationed in the vaccination centers to lend a helping hand or man the 3-day National Vaccination Days dubbed Bayanihan Bakunahan to help realize COVID-protected Philippines as more Filipinos are vaccinated. The simple celebration served as a stress reliever to the participating NAOs, D/C/MNPCs, reps from MNAO and MNPC associations and the NNC 7 secretariat.

We have been hearing about gluten or gluten free diet these days. Foods that we usually consume daily has gluten. For example, our baked bread from the bakeries, pastas we cook from packets or from restaurants or even crackers we eat as snacks have gluten in it.
Gluten is the protein found naturally in wheat, barley, rye or in some grains. The gluten is the one responsible for the stretchiness of a dough it then gives a soft, chewy texture we love in bread and the crispiness of a cracker.
Gluten is commonly found in our common food items, but how come gluten now adays are seen as not beneficial to the body? Why are people opting for gluten free diet? To answer those questions, a gluten free diet is an eating plan that excludes foods containing gluten. A gluten-free diet is also popular among people who haven't been diagnosed with a gluten-related medical condition. The claimed benefits of the diet are improved health, weight loss and increased energy, but more research is needed. A gluten-free diet is essential for managing signs and symptoms of celiac disease and other medical conditions associated with gluten.
