The Holidays are regarded to be one of the most important times throughout the year. This is the time for celebration, getting together with family and enjoy the holiday festivities. Many see this as a time to enjoy and consume whatever we like and feel exempted to the health requirements and limitations our physicians and dietitians provided for us. So, how can we stay healthy and enjoy the holidays at the same time?
It is very important to sit back and relax while enjoying the feast served at the dinner table. Sometimes, we get immersed in the moment and eat so much that we miss the signal and cues our body is telling us that it is full. Thus, we must eat in moderation. It is advisable to take 10-minute breaks to listen and feel your body before continuing eating. Another important note to remember is to remain hydrated. Make sure to maintain the right amount of balance between food and water. If you are taking alcoholic beverages, make sure to drink water in between glasses of your cocktails.
Another is that there is no reason we cannot enjoy a full meal but there is another way to enjoy them while staying conscious on the calorie or sugar intake and that is substituting. Choose broth-based soup instead of making heavy, creamed soups. Also make sure you put in a balance diet or protein, vegetable, and fruit to achieve that healthy celebration.

Negros Oriental - In the Philippines, Christmas eve feast known as Noche Buena has Hamonada or Christmas Ham as one of the feature viands for the celebration. This tradition of eating ham came from the Spaniards who brought Christianity in the Philippines. But how much nutrition do we really get in this sought-after food for the holidays?
Ham comes from the leg part of a pig. The meat is preserved with either salt or smoke, and the preservation process varies. Ham is rich in protein, low in carbohydrates, fat and fiber. It is a complete protein since it provides all nine essential amino acids. Overall, ham alone is low in calories. Micronutrients are also found in this popular pork product. It is particularly rich in Selenium and Iron. Thiamine and other B vitamins, phosphorus, zinc and potassium can also be found in decent amounts.

Cebu City - As the highest policy making and coordinating body for nutrition in the region, the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) passes policies that are responsive to the region’s current nutrition situation. This affiliate body of the Regional Development Council coordinates the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) and the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) 2017-2022.
Annually, the RNC identifies member agencies to be visited for Advocacy Talks with the Regional Directors or Heads of key national government agencies. Its technical working group would assist the RNC secretariat in making the advocacy meeting a success.
The advocacy visit hopes to appraise the Regional Directors and Heads of Agencies of the current nutrition situation of Central Visayas. According to DOST-FNRI during the 2019 National Nutrition Summit, “Stunting remains to be of high magnitude among under five years old children”. Thus, the member agency’s nutrition specific, nutrition sensitive and enabling programs included in the RPAN are the key nutrition interventions that would answer the prevailing malnutrition prevalence in the region.

Cebu City – As the country’s flagship nutrition program in the past five years, awareness of the regional Early Childhood Care and Development in the First 1000 Days (ECCD F1K) resolution amongst nutrition’s own stakeholders is low according to the results of the 2021 Policy Review conducted in Central Visayas this year.
Approved in 2018, the resolution on Regionwide Adoption of the ECCD F1K Program only has an 83.3% awareness rate amongst members of the Regional Nutrition Committee and members of the Regional Management Conference which is composed of the nutrition action officers and local nutrition program coordinators from the provinces and cities in Central Visayas and presidents of MNAO and MNPC associations of the four provinces despite said bodies being heavily involved in the formulation of said policy three years ago.
Passed with the purpose of guiding local nutrition committees in their adoption of the ECCD F1K program in a bid to ultimately address the stunting problem in the Central Visayas, the program itself is focused on the provision of nutrition and nutrition-related interventions in the first 1000 days of life to ensure that children grow to their full potential both mentally and physically.
