Cebu Province – The Super typhoon Odette has devastated many regions in the country including Central Visayas. The southern part of Cebu is one of the areas hardly hit. Few days after the devastation, the Regional Nutrition Cluster of Central Visayas went to these areas on 22-23 December 2021 to provide nutrition in emergency services after the cluster covered Cebu City, Lapu-lapu City, Mandaue City and City of Naga on 19 and 21 December 2021. 

 

To cover more areas, the cluster was divided to two teams. The first team was led by ND II Shaira Camille T. Labastida of DOH CV CHD/NNC 7. With her were Health and Nutrition Consultant Retz Pol O. Pocaliong of the UNICEF, PNFPs Mary Bliss Joy P. Iguana and John Dale C. Maningo and NO I Christine April M. Lopez of NNC 7 and Juan Victor M. Filamor of DOH CV CHD/NNC 7, They visited Alcoy, Argao, Dalaguete, Minglanilla, San Fernando, and Sibonga.

Negros Oriental - A week filled with activities, the National Nutrition Council Region VII and Human Resource for Health-Nutrition had a jampacked schedule on 06-10 December 2021 in Negros Oriental. Starting off with a two-day LGU mentoring activity and technical exchange, followed by a writing workshop, HRH for Nutrition program implementation review and a team building activity. 

In the LGU mentoring and technical exchange, NNC 7 team and HRH for Nutrition from all over the region provided technical assistance directed to ten LGUs of the province to mobilize them for better nutrition outcomes. It also served as venue for mentoring local nutrition workers in their roles for the program with those from different areas in the region being able to share good nutrition practices to assigned areas in the province.

Barili, Cebu - The nutrition workers of Barili gears up to revive the Barili Nutrition School on Air (NSOA). The revitalized broadcast was aired live on 12 October 2021 over Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program - Radyo Kahimsug.  

The NSOA is a nutrition promotion module developed by the National Nutrition Council to create public awareness and adopt good nutrition. It has 12 sessions on 10 Kumainments.

The Municipal Nutrition Focal Person Nurse – Ms. Maria Lynette Eleccion took the lead in that show. With the need of Rural Health Unit to focus on COVID-19 vaccination to achieve the herd immunity, other nutrition workers particularly the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) pitch in and took turn in disseminating important nutrition lessons thru Barili NSOA.

2021 RNA CityOfNagaNaga City - Super typhoon Odette (international name Rai) struck many regions in the country including Central Visayas on that fateful day on 16 December 2021. The City of Naga is one of the badly hit cities. Just three days after that devastating disaster, the Regional Nutrition Cluster visited the city to provide nutrition in emergency services to evacuees housed at three evacuation centers of the City.

The team composed of Mr. Retz Pol Pacalioga of UNICEF, Ms. Shaira Camille Labastida of DOH CV CHD/NNC 7, Ms. Christine Lopez, and Ms. Nasudi G. Soluta of the National Nutrition Council Region VII conducted rapid nutrition assessment, distribution of Vitamin A supplements to children 6 months old to five years old to further boost their immunity. Nutrition assessment was also made to pregnant mothers and breastfeeding counseling was given to lactating mothers in the evacuation sites.

Amlan, Negros Oriental – The Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) of Amlan launched its ‘Pakigstorya ni Mama’. This is two-session interaction with pregnant moms, lactating women and mothers with malnourished child/children on the First 1000 Days. The launching event was held on 26 July 2021 attended all 8 barangays of the municipality with 15 participants per session.

According to UNICEF “the first 1000 days of life is between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s second birthday. It is a unique period of opportunity when the foundations for optimum health and development across the lifespan are established.” 

2021 RNA Mambaling finCebu City – The evacuees of Barangay Alaska, Mambaling in Cebu City call for help as they aim to recover from the devastation brought about by the recent fire and exacerbated by the Super Typhoon Odette that hit them hard. Needs expressed include food, potable drinking water, hygiene kits, and housing materials to start life anew.

The cry for assistance was relayed thru the members of the Regional Nutrition Cluster that visited the area two days after the devastating typhoon did a double whammy to the lives of the evacuees. The Nutrition Cluster is one of the sub-clusters under the Health Cluster. This is an interagency body led by the government and supported by non-government and faith-based organizations and development and humanitarian partners responsible for nutrition response during emergencies.
