b 220 220 2734 0   images bc Baguio City-- The BNS Training and Refresher Course of the Baguio City Nutrition Committee (BCNC) was successfully held on April 12, 2013 at GSP Ating Tahanan, South Drive, Baguio City. The event was graced by Hon. Erdolfo Balajadia, in behalf of the City Mayor, Hon. Mauricio Domogan. It was attended by 150 Barangay Nutrition Action Officers (BNAOs), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), City and District Nutrition Program Coordinators (C & DNPCs) and BCNC members.

During the lecture, the topics were focused on the: 1) programs/activities of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) for the solo parents; 2) Updates on the Revised Alternative Learning System (ALS) by the DepED, wherein the partnership of the barangays implementers with the DepED was requested to have more educated citizens; and 3) 2012 Revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos by the NNC-CAR.

As part of the update, the 2013 Nutrition Month Theme “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!” was discussed by NO II Wendy Mana-a. She shared that the said theme aims to increase awareness on hunger issues and actions that need to be done to mitigate hunger; to encourage government agencies, non-government organizations, private sector, civil society organizations, and communities to contribute to addressing hunger issues; and to advocate for stronger political action to end hunger. She also requested the participants to start planning for their month long celebration focusing on this year’s theme.

The Refresher Course is organized annually by the Baguio Health Services Office thru the Nutrition Office which aims to update the BNSs on nutrition and other programs/activities that would inculcate and guide them in their respective barangays. Partners from the Government Agencies (GAs), Non-Government Organizations and the civil society were usually invited to share series of lectures. A short business meeting with the BNSs also follows after the lectures.

b 220 220 2734 0   images BNS car14 May 2013--The Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET), organized by the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC), started the Search for the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (OBNS) in the Cordillera Region for the year 2012.

This is an annual event being conducted in order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars in responding to the tasks mandated to them. Contenders for the Regional Outstanding BNS shall be evaluated and rated based on the comparison of the annual accomplishments and the targets set in his/her BNS action plan including implementation of innovative programs and projects in the barangay.

Local Nutrition Committees shall conduct the local evaluation to select respective P/COBNS. All declared OBNSs with at least a rating of 88% or higher will be validated by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team and will be qualified to participate in the regional search.

In the Cordillera, the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team already visited and validated the entries of Abra, Kalinga, Tabuk City and Baguio City while the other entries of Ifugao and Benguet is scheduled the last two weeks of May 2013. Mountain Province and Apayao were not able to join the search since there were no assessment conducted by both the Municipal and Provincial Evaluation Teams in their respective area.

The declared ROBNS will compete for the National Outanding BNS Search to be conducted on the 3rd quarter of this year by the National Evaluation Team (NET) based on the top seven (7) ROBNSs in the country.

Flores, Executive Director of the National Nutrition Council with the MQ Mediazone Production visited DZNA FM 99.9 Mghz Nutriskwela Radyo Kabinnulig in Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST), in Lagangilang, Abra. This is one of the 25 Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations newly established by the National Nutrition Council in partnership with an LGU or an SU/C.

“The purpose of the visit is not to look for the problems and deficiencies, considering that the radio station just officially aired last June 3, 2013 but we want to hear from the Community Radio Council of Radyo Kabinnulig about your plans in sustaining this project”, A/Sec Flores said.

The President of ASIST and also the Station Manager of the radio, Dr. Aurelio Labanen with the CRC members presented their daily planned programs and operations of the station and solicited recommendations from the Monitoring Team Production regarding how to sustain the project and how to get more sponsorships and donations.

A/Sec Flores with the team shared some tips on how to successfully operate a community radio station like: covering events, utilizing student participation, maximizing the allowed air time by the NTC, and expanding the CRC membership to private sectors and civil societies. She also announced that, the National Nutrition Council will conduct regular surprise visits to assess extent of program implementation.

b 330 220 2734 0   images IMG 66383-7 June 2013—The National Nutrition Evaluation Team (NNET) led by Ms. Ellen Ruth Abella of the National Nutrition Council together with Ms. Girlie Grace Casimiro of the National Economic and Development Authority, and Ms. Gemaima Evangelista and Ms. Ana Lorraine Dela Vega of the UP-Los Baños visited the Province of Ifugao to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of nutrition program implementation in the said area.

Ifugao is vying its second year maintenance of the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award after garnering the Outstanding Provincial Nutrition Implementer Green Banner Award for three consecutive years (2008-2010) in the Cordillera Region and after bagging its first year maintenance last year.

The NNET accompanied by the regional and provincial representatives spearheaded by OIC-NPC Rose Lulu Pagaduan of the National Nutrition Council- Region 1 and CAR and DNPC Corazon Dawong of the Provincial Nutrition Office visited three sampled municipalities: Alfonso Lista, Mayoyao and Hungduan to validate the sustainability and impact of nutrition program implementation from the provincial, municipal as well as barangay level.

Hopefully, the Province will be a contender for the Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) next year, the highest nutrition award in the country given to local nutrition committees, if they will be able to get the score of at least 95 points and pass its second year validation of CROWN maintenance.

b 447 220 2734 0   images litrato053710 July 2013 – The National Nutrition Council-CAR in partnership with its local media group, the CAR-MENU and with the Philippine Information Agency-CAR, conducted the Kapihan sa Baguio at the PIA Conference Room in observance with this year’s Nutrition Month with the theme: “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!”. This is a regular event of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) every month of July and is being aired live on radio (DZWT AM 540Gghz) and replayed on skycable TV.

The panelists were composed of OIC-NPC Rose Lulu Pagaduan of NNC-CAR; Ms. Marcia Espinueva of DSWD-CAR; Ms. Michelle Andaya of Deped-CAR; and Ms. Teresa Abaratigue of DA-CAR anchored by Dir. Helen Tibaldo of PIA-CAR together with Mr. Gaby Keith of Midland Courier.

The press conference focused on hunger and malnutrition incidence in the Cordillera, the existing programs and projects in addressing these problems and about the activities lined-up for the celebration.

b 220 165 2734 0   images PreNut 2 The Nutritionist-Deititians’ Association of the Philippines- Baguio Benguet Chapter (NDAP-BBC), a non- profit professional association and a member of the Regional Nutrition Committee of the Cordillera Region allotted an hour for the discussion of the 2013 Nutrition Month Talking Points during their Pre-Nutrition Month Seminar held on June 19 and 20, 2013 at Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City.

Ms. Bella Basalong, Nutrition Officer I of NNC-CAR was invited to enlighten the participants of the seminar on the theme “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan.” Ms. Basalong reminded that through the Presidential Decree 491, July was designated as the month of creating awareness on nutrition among Filipinos. She also explained that this year’s theme of nutrition month celebration is focused on hunger to elicit more effort and support from various stakeholders to mitigate hunger and to fast track actions to meet the first Millennium Development Goal on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. Finally, she enumerated the practical actions on how to help reduce hunger and malnutrition and several ways to celebrate the Nutrition Month more meaningful and worthwhile.

The event is an annual activity of NDAP-BBC which aims to prepare the participants to the nutrition month celebration and provide updates on nutrition issues. Participants of the seminar were BNSs/BHWs/BNAOs and members of the Barangay Nutrition Committee on the first day while the second day was participated by Nutritionist-Dietitians, MNAOs, and other Nutrition Advocates from CAR and Region I.
