b 220 220 2734 0   images psnd Baguio City—The 2013 Annual Convention of the Philippine Society of Nutritionist- Dietitians (PSND), Inc. was held last April 4-5, 2013 at Hotel Veniz here in the City of Pines with more or less 300 delegates from all over the country. This is a dynamic organization of professionals in the field of nutrition and dietetics and other allied disciplines. It is also envisioned to be the vital partner in ensuring food and nutrition security.

Ms. Maria Veritas F. Luna, PSND, Inc. President said that this year’s theme “Nutrition by Design” is apt corollary to our professional roadmapping as Nutritionist-Dietitians for better delivery of nutrition and dietetic services in the country. “We wish to share in the convention, our vision for all our initiatives to bear the ‘Tatak Nutrition’- a brand of effectiveness, creativitiy, and propriety. We wish to see more upgrading, speeding up, getting around, and more contemporary refinements than old school approaches driven by higher standards that we desire”, she added.
Among the topics presented and discussed by the invited nutrition experts were the following: Reflection on the visibility and competency of nutrition professional: where are we now? by Ms. Virgith Buena, Chairperson of the PRC Board of Examiners for Nutrition and Dietetics; Be seen, Be heard: It’s more fun working with media by Asst. Prof. Danilo Arao; The art and science of networking and resource generation by Ms. Pinky Medina, Exec. Director of Venture for Fund Raising; Developing an eye for aesthetic: applications in nutrition work by Mr. Robert Alejandro, Owner of the RAW and Robert Alejandro Art and Design; Event organizing solutions for nutrition initiatives by Mr. Adolf Aran, President of Food and Hospitality Events Specialist, Inc.; Storytelling nutrition by Mr. Randolf Yanza, Story Teller and Consultant of the National Book Development Board; and many more.

The 2014 annual convention will be held somewhere in Visayas region.

b 330 220 2734 0   images cdnpcThe newly elected officers of the City Nutrition Program Coordinator Association of Baguio City took their oath of office during the Barangay Nutrition Scholar’s Training and Refresher Course held on April 12, 2013 at the GSP Ating Tahanan, South Drive, Baguio City. Dr. Florence Reyes, the City Health Officer and City Nutrition Action Officer, administered the oath of office.

The set of officers are Ms. Angelita Sabado (President), Mr. Joel Junsay (Vice President), Ms. Rafaela Milagros Ducusin (Secretary), Ms. Corazon Cabayanan (Treasurer), Ms. Myrna Holonio (Auditor) and Ms. Ma. Conception Itliong and Ms. Rosalina Caya-os (Business Managers).

The simple oath taking ceremony was witnessed by the Barangay Nutrition Scholars city wide and Ms. Wendy M. Mana-a , NO II of NNC-CAR.

b 285 220 2734 0   images dznaLagangilang, Abra—The DZNA-FM 99.9Mhz Nutriskwela Radyo Kabinnulig in Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST) is now officially on air just after the turnover of the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) license to operate from the National Nutrition Council to Dr. Aurelio Labanen, President of ASIST. This was held during the inauguration and blessing of the nutriskwela studio and equipments last April 17, 2013 witnessed by almost 70 representatives coming from the local government and non- government organizations.

Radyo Kabinnulig is one among the 25 Nutriskwela Community Radio Station established by the National Nutrition Council in partnership with LGUs and State Universities or Colleges (SUCs) and the second nutriskwela radio station in the Cordillera Administrative Region with the objective of empowering the community through the dissemination of correct, relevant and up-to-date nutrition and health information, as well as educational and developmental information from all sectors.

Hon. Patrocinio Abaya, Municipal Mayor of Lagangilang, Abra expressed his full support to the program and said during the inaugural interview that this is a great opportunity to inform and educate the people of Lagangilang about the programs of the local government especially the nutrition- related programs.

“This radio program of the National Nutrition Council of the Department of Health is a very big help to us here in Lagangilang especially in educating the people on agriculture, health, and other sectoral programs and I believe that this will contribute to the reduction of poverty and malnutrition of Lagangilang in particular and the Province of Abra as a whole”, he added.

Moreover, the radio station will be managed by the said school with the supervision of the Community Radio Council composed of the trained representatives from the different sectors chaired by Mr. Marino Trinidad, former Provincial Director of the DILG and representing the Senior Citizens Group.

The NNC with CAR- Regional Office will regularly conduct monitoring and evaluation to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of the radio program guided by several policies.

b 527 220 2734 0   images images  1011005 15-16 April 2013—The National Nutrition Council with its media partner, MQ Mediazone Productions, conducted a hands-on training on Community Radio Broadcasting on Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program in Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST), Lagangilang, Abra. This was attended by 30 participants representing the various sectors: the Academe, Local Goverment Unit of Lagangilang, Abra, BNS Federation, Senior Citizens Group, Farmers Association, Fisherfolks, Religious Group, Youth and Students Organizations, Indigenous People and the Philippine National Police.

The training intends to orient and mobilize the different sectors in the Municipality of Lagangilang to actively participate and support the radio program; to be members of the community radio council; and to be broadcasters of the Nutriskwela Radio Program of the National Nutrition Council in partnership with the said school.

Ms. Jovita B. Raval, Chief of the Nutrition Information and Education Division of the NNC said that the radio program was established by the NNC in partnership with ASIST with the goal of empowering the community through the radio to disseminate correct, current and relevant nutrition and health information from all concerned sectors of the community, government agencies and non-government agencies.

Lagangilang, Abra was the targeted location for the program being one among the municipalities with high prevalence of malnutrition, under the 609 municipalities identified as convergence area for poverty reduction and has no commercial radio station reaching the area.

Province, the Most Active Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs) were recognized during the Provincial Health Summit and Philippine Public Health Association (Mt. Province Chapter) Convention on April 18, 2013 at Ridgebrooke Hotel and Restaurant, Samoki, Bontoc, Mt. Province. Dr. Amelita Pangilinan (Assistant Regional Director of DOH-CHD-CAR and RNC Chairman representative) graced the event. She congratulated the province for the initiative in adopting the giving of recognition to good practices that DOH-CHD Regional Office instituted for the LGUs during the Health Decision Makers’ forum.

The criteria for the selection of the Most Active MNAOs included the following: !) presence of approved 2012 MNAP; 2) attendance to PNC Meetings from 2011 to 2012; 3)MNC regular meetings initiated and conducted from 2011 to 2012; 4)activities initiated on Nutrition from 2011 to 2012; and 5) the submission of reports/documents from 2011 to 2012.

Among the eleven MNAOs of the province, Ms. Helen M. Kimmayong of Bauko ranked first while Ms. Elizabeth T. Billao (Sabangan) and Dr. Diga Kay D. Gomez (Bontoc) ranked second and third, respectively.

Ms. Kimmayong bested other contenders for her regular submission of nutrition plan and reports to the provincial nutrition office including the regional level. Also, she is consistently initiating the municipal wide celebration of Nutrition Month or the Lumdang (as they locally termed) yearly. Although performing multiple functions in the Rural Health Unit as the Nurse II and CHT Coordinator, she still took the challenge of working as the MNAO positively. She said that the strong support of the Municipal Nutrition Council, headed by Hon. Simon Lacwasan, Sr. greatly contributed in achieving the recognition.

The Most Active MNAOs award was presented by Dr. Penelope Domogo (PHO) and assisted by Dr. Pangilinan (ARD, DOH-CHD), Ms. Emily Lumpio (RNET, DBM-CAR), Mr. Wilfred Bilog (PNAO) and Ms. Wendy Mana-a (NO II, NNC-CAR).

b 297 220 2734 0   images htbrd BAGUIO CITY-- After passing the “Competency Training on the Verification of Wooden Height Boards and Weighing Scales” conducted by the National Nutrition Council in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology – Metals Industry Research and Development Center, all the Cordillera Administrative Region participants namely Ms. Mary June A. Algarne (District Nutrition Program Coordinator, Abra), Ms. Glenda B. Benedito (DNPC, Abra), Ms. Amelia L. Cayap (Provincial Nutrition Action Officer, Benguet), Ms. Lordes P. Kinuh-ol (Rural Sanitary Inspector, Ifugao) Ms. Frances C. Sebastian (DNPC, Kalinga), Mr. Wilfredo B. Bilog (PNAO, Mt. Province), Ms. Corazon B. Cabanayan (DNPC, Baguio City), Engr. Angel L. Maguen (Science Research Specialist II, DOST-CAR), Ms. Bella M. Basalong (Nutrition Officer I, NNC-CAR) and Ms. Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan (OIC-Nutrition Program Coordinator, NNC Reg. I & CAR) are now certified to verify wooden height boards and weighing scales for use in the conduct of the Operation Timbang Plus, Growth Monitoring and Nutrition Assessment of the under five year olds and school children.

According to Ms. Hygeia Ceres Catalina Gawe, the Chief of the Nutrition Surveillance Division of NNC- CO, the NNC Governing Board Resolution No. 3, s. 2012 “Approving the Guidelines on the Fabrication Verification and Maintenance of Wooden Height Boards” and NNC Governing Board Resolution No. 2, s. 2008 “Adoption of New Child Growth Standards for Use for Children 0-5 years old in the Philippines” were the legal mandates that urged the verification of the measuring equipments used in the nutritional assessment of underfive children nationwide.

Moreover, OIC NPC of NNC Region I and CAR. Ms. Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan emphasized in her opening remarks that the training is very important to ensure the accuracy of collected data on the nutritional status of the children because it is the basis for nutrition program planning as well as in evaluating the impact of nutrition programs implemented.

The expert trainors from the DOST- MIRDC Engr. Rodnel O. Tamayo and Engr. Rommel N. Corona pointed out that the verification of the wooden height boards for height/length measurement and hanging scale and beam balance scales for weight measurement should be done at a specific point in time to confirm that it has not significantly deviated from its original calibrated value from the authorized calibration laboratory.

The competency training was conducted at Hotel Veniz, Baguio City on April 22, 2013 for the first batch attended by Region I and CAR participants while the second batch was held on April 23 ,2013 at the same venue attended Region II and III participants.
