GAW
“Goiter Sugpuin, Isip Patalinuhin, Iodized Salt Gamitin”. This is the battle cry for this year’s Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) this January 22-28, 2017 emphasizing the use of Iodized salt as one of the preventive measures of goiter and other manifestations of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD).  GAW is a national annual event every 4th week of January that focuses on continuous information dissemination and preventive measures to eradicate goiter and other forms of IDD.

Iodine Deficiency Disorder is still a public health concern in the country particularly among elderly, adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers based on the results of the 8th National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the DOST. It is still a challenging micronutrient deficiency that usually affects women under reproductive age, pre-school and school-aged children. Lack or limited iodine in the body may lead to
Goiter, Low birth weight, Reproductive failures such as miscarriage and stillbirth, Congenital anomalies such as deaf-mutism, squint, poor growth, and mental retardation.
