San Fernando City, La Union—The LUPang Ilocos Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation, Incorporated (LUPang Ilocos BNS Fed., Inc.) in cooperation with the Nutrition Office of La Union as the host province and in coordination with the National Nutrition Council- Regional Office I (NNC-ROI) will hold its 5th Regional Congress on September 18, 2015 at Ariana Hotel, Bauang, La Union. Around 800 Barangay Nutrition Scholars coming from the different provinces and cities in the region are expected to attend the activity.
The congress with the theme “LUPang Ilocos BNSs: Kasangga sa Paghain ng Wastong Pagkain Para Tamang Timbang ay Makamtan!” is anchored with the 2015 nutrition month celebration and will be focusing on the roles of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in addressing the growing concern of overnutrition as one of the major factors in developing non-communicable diseases.
Highlight of the event will be the technical discussion on the management of childhood obesity, meal planning including sessions on proper documentation and building confidence to upgrade the knowledge and skills of BNSs in performing their duties efficiently.

Cervantes, Ilocos Sur- The DZNP-FM 93.5Mhz Nutriskwela Radyo Kabinnadang in Ilocos Sur Polythecnic State College (ISPSC) is now officially on air after its inauguration and blessing last May 20, 2015 witnessed by the Community Radio Council, station personnel,and NNC officials.
Radyo Kabinnadang is one of the 35 Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations established by the National Nutrition Council in partnership with LGUs and State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and the second nutriskwela radio station in Region I with the objective of empowering community through the dissemination of correct, relevant and up-to-date nutrition and health information, as well as education and developmental information from all sectors.

Caoayan, Ilocos Sur - The Department of Health – Regional Office 1 conducted a 3 day orientation/training on the use of the Iodine Checker Machine from February 17-20, 2015 at Alad Bar and Resort, Caoayan, Ilocos –Participants of the training were Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs) from the provinces of La Union, Iocos Norte and Ilocos Sur including and Ms. Nancy E. Paclos of NNC Region 1.
The training aims to introduce the Iodine Checker Machine as a monitoring tool in the implementation of the ASIN Law and to train MNAOs on the proper use and operation of the Iodine Checker Machine for accurate results.
Dra. Amelia Dumaoang, Medical Officer IV and Focal Person of the ASIN Program explained that MNAOs play a very important role in the ASIN Law particularly in monitoring compliance of the Law.

Baguio City—A total of 92 nutrition planners and frontline workers coming from the different Local Government Units of LUPang Ilocos Region were trained on World Health Organization- Child Growth Standards (WHO-CGS) held last April 28-30, 2015 in Hotel Veniz. The training aims to capacitate nutrition workers on WHO-CGS, strengthen the implementation of the Operation Timbang Plus and to promote full adoption of the CGS. The training was organized by the National Nutrition Council-I and was funded by the Department of Health- Regional Office.
The training was divided into three batches with Municipal/City Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs) and selected District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/CNPCs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) as participants.

The Municipality of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, as the identified pilot area for expansion in Region 1 of the Early Warning System- Food and Nutrition Security (EWS-FNS) conducted a 4-day training on Early Warning System-Food and Nutrition Security for Municipal EWS Team and Household Enumerators on February 10-13, 2015 at Villa D’ El-Lita, Sudipen, La Union. This project was first established in some areas in the country and is one of the NNC’s commitments to expand and sustain the effort towards its establishment in other municipalities and these areas shall serve as models for scaling up of the food and nutrition security EWS in as many areas in the country.
The training which was composed of 12 technical sessions for the Municipal EWS Team and 6 sessions for Household Survey Enumerators was facilitated by Ms. Ma. Cynthia B. Vengco, Nutrition Officer III of the Nutrition Surveillance Division- NNC Central Office, together with Ms. Ma. Eileen B. Blanco, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC-ROI and Mr. Kendall A. Gatan, Nutrition Officer III of NNC-ROI.

San Fernando City, La Union— As a strategy to increase awareness on good nutrition in LUPang Ilocos Region, the League of Nutrition Action Officers in Region I, Inc. (RLNAOs) will be conducting a “Raffle for a Cause” on July 2015. The raffle for a cause will be conducted during the launching of the Regional Nutrition Month Celebration.
The proceeds of the activity will be utilized for reproduction of Nutrition IEC Materials particularly the 10 Kumainments, the popular version of the 10 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos to be distributed to the top 10 nutritionally depressed municipalities (NDMs) in Region I that were identified based on the 2014 Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) result.
The proceeds will also be used in the conduct of nutrition civic advocacy activity targeting the most nutritionally depressed municipality in the region in partnership with the Regional Organization of Nutrition and Development Advocates (RONDA).
