Officers of the LUPangIlocosBNSFed.,Inc. with the City Nutrition Office Staff and Barangay Nutrition Scholars of Calamba last February 12, 2016.12 February 2016—The officers of the LUPang Ilocos Barangay Nutrition Scholar Federation, Incorporated (LUPangIlocosBNSFed.,Inc.) held its first educational tour in the Cities of Tagaytay and Calamba last February 11-12, 2016. The said activity was an opportunity for the officers to observe, learn and share with co-local implementers new strategies and approaches to enhance their knowledge and skills for an efficient and effective nutrition program implementation in Region I.

Tagaytay City and Calamba City are popularly known as among the nutrition champions in the country, being adjudged as Nutrition Honor Awardees (NHA), the highest nutrition award given by NNC to LGUs that have shown exemplary performance in implementing nutrition program at the local level. They are also recognized as producers of Outstanding BarangayNutrition Scholars.

The officers were able to have a dialogue, exchange of ideas, and acquired strategies to the key nutrition stakeholders in the two cities and had the chance to witness and observe good practices in nutrition in Barangay Maharlika East in TagaytayCity and Barangay Pansol in Calamba City.

Mr. Hector Maglalang, Project Consultant of UNICEF Philippines facilitating the Workshop on Marketing of Iron Fortified Rice during the Rice Fortification Advocacy Meeting last January 28, 2016 at the Marand Resort and Spa, Baccuit Sur, Bauang, La Union Bauang, La Union – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) spearheaded the first leg of the Rice Fortification Advocacy for Social Safety Net Programs last January 28, 2016 at the Marand Resort and Spa, Bauang, La Union which was attended by 65 participants including Provincial/City/Municipal Nutrition Action officers, District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators, partners from the Regional Line Agencies, representatives from Non-Government Organizations and partners from the media. The activity aims to develop a consensus work plan among public, private and non-government organizations for scaling up rice fortification in the Philippines.

Region 1 is among the six (6) regions in the country together with NCR, Regions III, IV-A, XI and XII with fortified kernel production and Iron Fortified Rice distribution.

The Department of Health- Regional Office I (DOH-ROI) through the initiative of the NNC Regional Office I and Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) procured steel rules and weighing scales for all LGUs in the region to ensure accuracy and reliability of nutritional assessment particularly the annual Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) at the local level. The Department of Health- Regional Office I (DOH-ROI) through the initiative of the NNC Regional Office I and Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) procured steel rules and weighing scales for all LGUs in the region to ensure accuracy and reliability of nutritional assessment particularly the annual Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) at the local level.

This is in support to the full adoption of the World Health Organization- Child Growth Standards (WHO-CGS) where weight-for-height/length and height/length-for-age are included as indicator to determine the magnitude of wasting and stunting, respectively.

Ipinapakita ni NPC Blanco ang mga tamang kagamitan sa pagkuha ng timbang.Ang malnutrisyon ay isang kondisyon na sanhi ng kakulangan, labis o sobra, hindi balanseng kaloriya, at sustansya sa pagkain para magamit ng katawan. Ito ay may dalawang mukha: ang kakulangan sa nutrisyon o undernutrition at ang sobra sa nutrisyon o mas kilala na overnutrition.

Kasama sa karaniwang uri ng undernutrition ay ang kakulangan sa timbang (underweight), pagkabansot (stunted) at pagkapayat (wasted). Ang overnutrition naman ay ang sobra sa timbang (overweight).
Ang problema ng malnutrisyon ay patuloy pa rin na hinaharap hindi lamang sa Rehiyon Uno, sa Pilipinas kundi pati buong mundo. Kung pagbabasehan ang resulta ng 8th National Nuutrition Survey (NNS) ng Food and Nutrition Research Institute ng Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), ang kalagayang pang-nutrisyon ng mga batang Pilipino na 0-5 taong gulang base sa timbang dito sa Rehiyon Uno ay bahagyang tumaas mula 20.3 porsiyento noong 2008 at 21.4 porsiyento nitong 2013. Ang pagkabansot naman ay halos walang pagbabago mula 27.5 porsiyento noong 2008 at 27.4 porsiyento noong 2013. Samantala tumaas ang porsiyento ng mga payat (wasted) mula 6.5 porsiyento noong 2013, na naging 9.8 porsiyento nitong 2013, gayundin ang sobra sa timbang, mula 3.5 porsiyento noong 2008 hanggang 5.4 nitong 2013.

San Fernando City, La Union - For the past three years, the Regional Organization of Nutrition Development Advocates-1 (RONDA-1), an organization of local media partners in Region 1 has been conducting an annual civic advocacy activity in a nutritionally depressed barangay in a municipality or city in the region with high prevalence of undernutrition based on the results of the Operation Timbang Plus.   In 2013, the activity was conducted in Barangay Bonuan, Gueset, Dagupan City. Activities such as lectures on good nutrition and Income Generating Projects (IGP) were presented and discussed including the actual malunggay planting at Gueset Elementary School.   In 2014, it was conducted in Barangay Salomague Sur, Bugallon, Pangasinan. Presentation on several IGPs such as mushroom production, pulvoron preparation and puto-making were introduced to one hundred six (106) mothers of underweight and severely underweight preschoolers in addition to the Promotion of 10 Kumainments and breastfeeding.   Last 2015, in partnership with LUPang Ilocos BNS Federation, Inc. and the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcasters ng Pilipinas-Pangasinan Chapter, RONDA-1 conducted the activity at Barangay Turac, San Carlos City.   Fifty (50) mothers of underweight and severely underweight preschoolers with their children attended the activity. Lectures on Organic Farming and Backyard Gardening were presented by Ms. Josephine Serna, Science Research Specialist II, Department of Agriculture-Pangasinan Research and Experiment Center, Sual, Pangasinan of and Mr. Raul Marcelo of the City Agriculture Office-San Carlos City.  NO I Gretchen J. Nisperos gave a lecture on the 10 Kumainments.  The preschool children were also given the chance to watch the Why Not episodes, a program of NNC in partnership with ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. promoting nutritional value of nutritious foods particularly fruits and vegetables, aired every Saturday from 8:00-8:30 in the morning.  Likewise, to keep the children alive, Nutrition related parlor games were introduced to the children.   Hygiene kits from DOH-ROI, organic seeds from DA-ROI and nochebuena packages courtesy of RONDA-1 and LUPang Ilocos BNS Fed., Inc. officers were distributed to the mothers after the activity. Blanco handed over the Early Warning System for Food and Nutrition Security (EWS-FNS) equipment which include one unit of laptop computer, printer and accessories to the Municipality of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur 15 January 2016- The National Nutrition Council (NNC) through NNC-ROI’s Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ma. Eileen B. Blanco handed over the Early Warning System for Food and Nutrition Security (EWS-FNS) equipment which include one unit of laptop computer, printer and accessories to the Municipality of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur represented by Municipal Administrator Elisa Q. Bunoan, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Charmaine Joy D. Jimeno and Computer Programmer Freddie Paul L. Ringor on Friday during the ceremonial turn-over at the Mayor’s Office.
