Bauang, La Union—The LUPang Ilocos Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation, Incorporated (LUPang Ilocos BNS Fed., Inc.) in cooperation with the Nutrition Office of La Union as the host province and in coordination with the National Nutrition Council- Regional Office I (NNC-ROI) held its 5th Regional Congress on September 18, 2015 at Ariana Hotel, Bauang, La Union. A total of 852 Barangay Nutrition Scholars coming from the different provinces and cities in the region attended the congress.
The congress with the theme “LUPang Ilocos BNSs: Kasangga sa Paghain ng Wastong Pagkain Para Tamang Timbang ay Makamtan!” is anchored with the 2015 nutrition month celebration and will be focusing on the roles of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in addressing the growing concern of overnutrition as one of the major factors in developing non-communicable diseases.
Dir. Myrna C. Cabotaje, DOH-ROI Director IV and Regional Nutrition Committee Chairperson graced the event. She reiterated the signifant roles of BNSs in addressing overnutrition especially among children.

Baguio City- The National Nutrition Council- Regional Office I conducted the Training on Nutrition in Emergencies (NiE) on 15-18 October 2015 held at Hotel Veniz, Baguio City attended by Twenty (20) members of the Regional Nutrition Cluster. The training aims to capacitate the members with the basic skills on Rapid Nutritional Assessment (RNA) which includes weight, height and mid- upper arm circumference, conducting nutrition surveillance and administering standard and appropriate nutrition interventions or the NiE Minimum Service Package.
NPC Blanco, NO III Gatan of NNC-ROI and Ms. Orencia Macusi of DAR-Regional Office I who were trained on Nutrition in Emergencies by the National Nutrition Council and UNICEF last October 2014, facilitated the training.

To kick off the month long celebration of this year’s Nutrition Month, the National Nutrition Council Region 1 in coordination with the Department of Education- Regional Office 1 recently launched this year’s celebration with the theme, “Timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo,” at the Urdaneta 1 Central School (UICS).The activity was attended by around 300 participants composed of pupils, teachers, government officials, academe and media practitioners.
Urdaneta City was chosen as the venue for the launch as one of the pilot area on the accelerated and sustainable anti –poverty program (ASAPP) in the province of Pangasinan. It also ranked 4 with high prevalence of overweight school children among the nine other cities in the region.
Before the launching program, a press conference attended by media practitioners and information officers in the region was conducted at Matutinas Gerry’s Grill Seafoods. A simultaneous poster - slogan making contest and nutri-quiz were participated by pupils in support to the promotion of healthy lifestyle.

The National Nutrition Council-Regional Office I (NNC-ROI) joined the Department of Health- Regional Office I in its provincial launching of the High Impact 5 (HI5) Summit held at Mahogany Farm Barangay, Bayambang, Pangasinan; Plaza del Norte, Laoag City; Vigan Convention Center, Vigan City and Oasis Country Resort, San Fernando City, La Union on June 9, 11, 16 and 18, 2015, respectively.
The HI5 is the DOH strategy in achieving the goals of the Kalusugang Pangkalahatan (KP) which addresses the gaps and challenges on health inequities of the Filipinos.
The provincial launching aims to enjoin partners and stakeholders from the different Local Government Units (LGUs), non-government and private sectors in the provinces and municipalities of the region, ensuring their commitment on the 15-months strategy to address elements of Millenium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6 focusing on Maternal care, Infant Care, Care for under-five children, HIV/Aids prevention and control and establishment of functional service delivery network that will prioritized the poor.

Baguio City-- The National Nutrition Council-Regional Office I successfully conducted the simultaneous Training on Nutrition Program Management (NPM) and the Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) on August 24-28, 2015 held at Hotel Supreme, Magsaysay Ave., Baguio City. Twenty Eight (28) City/ Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (C/MNAOs) and representatives coming from the different LGUs in the region and Twenty Nine (29) C/MNAOs and Barangay Nutrition Scholars attended the training on NPM and BNS, respectively.
Ms. Ma. Eileen Blanco, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC-ROI spearheaded the conduct of the training on NPM together with Ms. Elma Irapta, PNAO of Ilocos Norte, Ms. Analiza Miranda, DNPC of Pangasinan, Mr. Joel Junsay, DNPC of Baguio City, Ms. Nancy Paclos, Nutrition Officer II and Ms. Tiffany Joy Penera, Nutrition Officer I of NNC-ROI. On the other hand, Mr. Kendall Gatan, Nutrition Officer III of NNC spearheaded the training of trainers for BNS Basic Course together with Ms. Estella Shayne Quinto, PNAO of Ilocos Sur, Ms. Jennie Apilas, DNPC of La Union, Ms. Christina Caroy, DNPC of Ilocos Norte, Ms. Gretchen Nisperos, Nutrition Officer I and Ms. Ma. Victoria Dela Cruz, Administrative Aide VI of NNC-ROI.
