BNS For Web

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – BNS Analee Bulan was crowned first ever Binibing BNS after excelling through rounds of opening gown, nutrition related attire, questions on social issues and one final chance to explain why she was the right choice.

 “Ang pag aalaga sa bata ay parehong responsibilidad at dapat ginagampanan ng isang ama at ina ng sabay. It should be a shared responsibility.” said BNS Bulan, as she brought home the first ever crown of the Binibining BNS in the recently concluded Regional BNS Congress in Tuguegarao City.

Bulan was an early standout during the entire coronation night — from her eloquent opening statement, her poise and walk during the opening dress, up to her show-stopping performance at the nutrition related dress portion. But what possibly sealed her fate as the Binibining BNS was her answer during the question and answer segment.

The Top 3 candidates — City of Ilagan, Tuguegarao City, and Isabela Province— displayed their gracefulness and eagerness to win the crown as they showed their beauty and their poised during the entire duration of the coronation day.

“Kung wala ng matatanggap na honorarium ang mga BNS, ipagpapatuloy ko ang pagsisilbi sa aking komunidad dahil masarap sa pakiramdam ang makita mong nasa tamang nutritional status ang iyong mga nasasakupan,” emphasized by Florencia Quizzagan, BNS Tuguegarao City, which resulted to bringing home the first runner up crown.

Bibingka is cooked sandwiched by fire. Suman is boiled and puto is steamed.

In Cagayan, there’s a fourth method of cooking Philippine rice cakes; inside bamboos and slow fire.

Welcome to the world of iconic Sinabalu and Tinubong,  Cagayano rice cake which have proven its resistance against fraternization of international influences ; they  have remain constant in the way they are prepared.

Sinabalu or rice cakes cooked in bamboos is the iconic domain of the Itawes region in Cagayan. In fact, it has been the region’s identity, part of their history and culture and a parcel of who they are as a people. The Sinabalu has been an expression of their way of living and passed on from generation to generation; part of their value system.

When the municipality held its 1st  Sukalati and Sinabalu  Festival in October this year, cultural warriors took notice.   Tuaoeños say that the word, ‘Sinabalu’ allegedly comes from the Ibanag words, ‘sinni I balu ( who is the widow)?’

Residents of Barangay Cagumitan, as shared by Tuao Tourism Office, claimed that people started to cook the rice cake as early as 1788 at a time when residents cooked  rice in  ‘hulu (Itawes, a species of bamboo). According to popular beliefs in the area, the Sinabalu is usually cooked by a Balu (widow) and offer them to spirits as to ward them off from inflicting illness among family members.

But how is Sinabalu prepared among the Itawes in the area? As shared by the municipality, here’s how:

  • Soak the deco (glutinous rice) for two hours in running water;
  • Grate matured coconuts and squeezed to get the coconut milk;
  • Cut the bamboos into desired lengths;
  • Clean the freshly gathered ‘arukek (Arrowroot, Maranta anundinacea) leaves and together with the deko and a little salt or none at all, insert them into the bamboos.
  • Cover with top of the bamboo with leaves ;
  • Place the bamboos side by side on standing position and;
  • Cook them in slow fire. Rotate the bamboos occasionally until done.

NCIMSanta Ana, Cagayan--- Department of Health- Disaster and Risk Reduction Management for Health (DOH-DRRM-H) and National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 02 trained 38 Information Management Officers during the recently concluded Training on Nutrition Cluster Information Management (NCIM) Batch 1 and 2 at Country Inn Hotel and Restaurant, Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

The Nutrition Cluster aims to ensure that the nutritional status of affected population especially the most vulnerable group i.e. infants, children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, older persons, persons with disabilities and people living with debilitating conditions, will not worsen or deteriorate due to impact of emergencies or disasters.

The prompt and successful response by the nutrition cluster during disasters and emergencies, however, requires accurate, reliable and recent data about the areas and the people affected and inherent capacities of the areas to respond, generated through an information management system. Such information are essential in planning and providing appropriate, adequate and timely nutrition interventions, and in formulating comprehensive recovery and rehabilitation plan. Review of nutrition cluster responses and gaps is also vital to improve future nutrition response.

LOGO BALAY NI IFAN

When Enrile Mayor Miguel Decena, Jr. greeted the people of Barangay Lanna, it was not just one of those greetings he did since elected as Local Chief Executive in May this year.

On a table, various seeds of vegetables, food supplements and other gift items were on a display as pre-schoolers tried to outsmart each other in the various games and other fun-filled activities; their mothers on the dance floor, September 27. That fateful day saw a mixed crowd of barangay officials, nutrition workers and advocacies from the government and the target audience of mothers and their children.

Decena  said he was thankful the National Nutrition Council in Region  2 selected his town as part of a very significant event  in the province as he assured  full support to all the former’s programs and activities to promote good nutrition.

Meanwhile, the members of the media could hardly contain their excitement as they virtually ran the three- hour activity. In fact, most of them brought gifts and together with what’s on the table, distributed them to an equally excited and a thankful audience.

The nutrition event was not the usual activity the media and NNC has done together; it was a celebration of a group which, admittedly, has been the toast of nutrition advocacies the last ten years.

Yes, the Balay Ni Ifan Media Task Force of NNC region 2 just celebrated its first decade of service.

Mayor Calaunan

Santiago City--- “Magiging CROWN Awardee kami,” a strong but challenging claim of former Quirino Vice Governor now Diffun, Quirino Mayor, Ms. May Garnace-Calaunan as she accepted the Very Satisfactory Quality Nutrition Program (QNP) Award during the 2019 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) at Palazzo Marcelino Events Center and Café, Balintocatoc, Santiago City.

The 2019 RNAC recognized the importance of local action in improving the nutrition situation in the region. The awarding was a fitting tribute to local government units, men and women who have worked hard for the nutritional well-being of the populace of Region II.

               In her acceptance speech, Mayor Calaunan urged other local chief executives present during the awarding ceremony to prioritize nutrition programs in their locality. “ Sa amin sa Diffun, marami kaming mga pinondohang innovative projects para sa nutrisyon, katulad ng pagbibigay ng isang pares ng manok sa mga bagong kasal, it may look simple for others but it will be beneficial to the couples for a start. They can be assure of eggs which is very important to pregnant mothers,” Mayor Calaunan proudly shared to fellow officials. She also stated the importance of convergence and collaboration among different stakeholders in order to improve the nutrition status of their locality. “Sa mga susunod na taon kami naman ang magiging CROWN awardee,” she happily ended.
