The Regional Nutrition Committee and the Regional Nutrition Cluster held a joint meeting last April 19, 2016 at The Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City. The meeting was presided by DOH XII OIC-Regional Director & acting chairperson of the Regional Nutrition Committee ARD Francisco V. Mateo. Eleven (11) member agencies (DA, DSWD, DILG, PIA, DBM, DOLE, DTI, NCIP, NFA, DOH and Save the Children) attended.
This first quarter 2016 meeting of the RNC provided a venue to meet and update the member agencies on the regional nutrition situation particularly those provinces/cities that have relatively high prevalence of undernutrition (based on the 2015 OPT Plus results). The RNC suggested that a proper venue or forum be selected to disseminate the information on the nutrition situation. It was also suggested that LCEs be informed of their nutrition situation for necessary action to address the problem. Equally important agenda were also discussed as follows: Presentation and validation of the 2015 RNC Strategic Plan accomplishment report, draft 2016 RNC Work Plan, briefing on the MELLPI and BNS Evaluation, as well as the 2016 Nutrition Month theme.
Meanwhile, NO llI Fernandez presented her Re-entry Project for Sitio Lemkati, Datal Dlanag, Tboli, South Cotabato which is a partial fulfillment of the requirements of her scholarship to the DAP Middle Managers Course - MPDP. The said community has high prevalence of undernutrition among preschool children that needs proper health and nutrition intervention. Commitment of support was generated from officials of NCIP who will provide technical assistance, DOH XII to provide vitamins and Jerry cans, while NFA XII to provide rice for feeding.

March 4, 2016 - The National Nutrition Council XII in partnership with the Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation conducted its first graduation ceremony of the Nutrition School-on-the-Air (SOCCSKSARGEN) for a total of 79 students, held at RadyoBida-NDBC Koronadal and RadyoBida-Kidapawan(dxND mini auditorium) stations on the same date separately. 37 NSOA graduates from Koronadal City and 42 NSOA graduates from Kidapawan City were given certificates of completion and tokens.
NO II Flores together with Ms. Fabian, and NOs I Aurel and Utlang attended and represented NNC Regional Office in the graduation ceremony at Koronadal City and Kidapawan City, respectively. The NSOA graduates were lauded for inspiring and serving as models on proper nutrition for other members of their communities to emulate. Special tokens were also given and awarded to the top 10 students of every station for earning the total highest scores for the whole duration of the NSOA.
NNC XII extends its appreciation and gratitude to the local media partners, as well as to the mentors, particularly the radio jocks and news anchors,in bringing much effort to the NSOA. The event was the culmination of their 13 rewarding NSOA sessions. NNC looks forward that the graduates would serve as catalysts and allies in inspiring and inviting others for upcoming batches that would definitely change their perspectives in achieving optimum nutrition. 10 kumainments, known as the pillar of healthy lifestyle set forth by the National Nutrition Council, which provides messages to promote appropriate diet and related health practices. Thus, the National Nutrition Council XII had been continuously extending conscious efforts in all areas of the region in keeping up the advocacy to achieve the goal of improving the nutritional condition of the population.
The NNC XII together with the Municipal Nutrition Offices of T’boli and Malungon, from South Cotabato and Sarangani provinces respectively, had worked hand in hand to come up with the translated 10 Kumainments in 3 vernacular versions, in B’laan, Kaulog and T’boli dialects, which the NNC-Nutrition Information Education Division (NIED) has already approved. Moreover, the NNC XII intends to reach out farther especially those areas with high prevalence rate of malnutrition.

The Household Gardeners Club had once again pulled off the banner of Koronadal City’s affluent strive towards managing food security in the community as they’ve celebrated their 5th Annual Convention last February 23, 2016 with their theme, “Gulayan sa bawat tahanan at pamayanan, ating itaguyod tungo sa kayamanan at tamang kalusugan ng mamamayan”..
The 27 barangays of the city,headed by their respective Barangay Officials and constituents had enthusiastically participated right from the veggie dance parade that had flared the activity, routing from the Old city hall to Rizal Park, where the final dance showdown and program proper had settled.
It also highlights thegreen and leafy display of various vegetables of the 27 barangaysin their respective booths which they had harvested from the different households in their community.
On the otherhand, NO I Aurel represented NNC-Regional Office as their resource speaker. She lauded the officers for sustaining the club as they continue to shine with their advocacy. She further stressed out the importance and benefits of homegrown vegetables and backyard garden as well as the advantages that we can get out from it, economically and security-wise. Moreover, she emphasized that cultivating and growing our own garden could really produce vegetables that has higher nutrient content such as phytochemicals, fiber, vitamins and minerals compared from other dispensing sources while ensuringsafe and fresh vegetables. She then reminded that health is the foundation towards development and issued a challenge for everyone to start and continue a healthier lifestyle knowing the unceasing growth rates of lifestyle diseases caused by bad habits of eating. Aside from that she encouraged everyone to take real actions and find every opportunity in improving our health through eating vegetables so that we could be useful citizens in our community.

Last February 18, 2016, the Regional BNS federation of Region XII had their first ever Lakbay Aral Activity held at the municipality of Malungon, Sarangani, the recipient of Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN). The delegates were able to have a glimpse of the municipality’s good practices and at the same time, learn, share and replicate those ideas with their respective areas out from the 2-day activity. On the first day, MNAO Roselyn Constantino together with her staff and federation officers of the municipality, warmly welcomed and led the tour for the Regional Officers to explore more of what the municipality could proudly offer. They visited some of their nutrition projects and witnessed some of their nutrition innovations. Moreover, the Federation was also able to had a courtesy call with Hon. Mayor Reynaldo F. Constantino. He appreciated the regional federation for having such a significant activity. He was deeply honored and further thanked the BNS for choosing Malungon to be the first venue of their 1st Lakbay Aral Activity. On the other hand, at the onset of dusk, the Federation had their group reflection about the activity. They shared what they have observed and what learning they’ve gained from the lakbay-aral. Further, at the second day (February 19, 2016), the BNS Officers conducted their first quarter meeting at Coco beach, Gumasa, Glan Sarangani. The 2-day activity was indeed a reflection of NNC’s unwavering endeavor of uniting the Federation and would truly give an upbeat impact as they’ll go back to their respective vicinities. RA 8976 - An Act Establishing the Philippine Food Fortification Program and for other purposes”, the Philippines had been constantly conforming and providing ways of fortifying staple foods such as cooking oil, sugar, wheat flour and including rice which aims to reduce and eradicate micronutrient malnutrition, specifically vitamin A deficiencies, anemia and iodine deficiency disorders.
Rice is a staple food, primarily in the Philippines, and knowing that micronutrient deficiencies are widespread, rice fortification can significantly contribute to the alleviation of micro-nutrient deficiencies. Out from this, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in 2014, together with the UNICEF and Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) had jointly worked hand in hand and initiated a project entitled, “Moving Forward towards Mandatory Rice Fortification in the Philippines” in response to the advocacy of Scaling up rice Fortification in the Philippines.
On February 4, 2014 at Green Leaf Hotel, General Santos City, the Rice Fortification Advocacy Meeting was convened by NNC in partnership with UNICEF mainly to discuss results of the study conducted on “Rice Fortification for Social Safety Net Programs”. Furthermore the advocacy meeting aimed to establish linkage between potential users and suppliers of iron-fortified rice and fortified kernels and most importantly to develop an action plan with specifics on policy, promotion and marketing components among government agencies. The meeting was attended by 39 participants coming from the 4 provinces, 5 cities and 15 selected municipalities of the region. Representatives of Regional Line Agencies from the DepEd, DOH, NFA, DSWD and DTI, also representatives from the Non- Government Organizations such as Kiwanis Club of Koronadal, Hapag-Asa Cotabato City, Mahintana Foundation, and International Care Ministries Inc. Furthermore CLG-Health Food Products and NutriDense Food suppliers of fortified products were also present.
Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Arceli M. Latonio in her opening remark, emphasized that realizing the importance of Iron Rice Fortification in the Region will significantly contribute to the improvement of the Region’s Nutrition Situation.
Mr. Hector C. Maglalang, Project Consultant from UNICEF, presented the key results of the study entitled “Study on Rice Consumption for Social Safety Net Programs”. A workshop on Marketing of Iron Rice Fortification was done in which the participants identified and shared their proposed activities and initiatives that will increase the production, distribution and consumption of iron fortified rice in the Region
Together, let us not lose hope towards achieving a brighter and healthier region.
