2 October 2016- A total of 536 older persons aged 60 years and older gathered to South Cotabato Sports Complex marking the celebration of Elderly Filipino Week, observed every first week of October as mandated in Presidential Proclamation No. 470.
This year’s theme “Pagmamahal at Respeto ng Nakababata, Nagpapaligaya sa Nakatatanda”, emphasizes that older persons should be loved, cared for, and respected as they play important roles in nation building. This annual celebration also raise awareness about respecting the rights of elderlies and protecting them from any forms of neglect, exploitation and abuse in the same manner how we care about the children.
The “Walk for life”, as every year’s kick-off activity of the week-long celebration was spearheaded by Philhealth and Department of Health in partnership with other government agencies, including National Nutrition Council XII, as well as local government units and senior citizen associations to enhance awareness of the public on the health concerns and well-being of older persons.
After the walk, free health services were provided such as blood pressure taking, medical and dental consultations, free medicines and pneumococcal vaccines for selected and qualified participants. NNC XII on the otherhand took charge of giving appropriate health teachings to maintain their health status and nutritional guidelines for senior citizens.

29 September 2016-The National Nutrition Council XII staff participated in the Tree Growing activity as part of the Regional Development Council XII Day Celebration. About 200 participants coming from the different agencies and various sectors in the region joined the said activity having NEDA RO XII as the secretariat. The participants braved the bad weather condition assembling at around 5 o’clock in the morning at Gaisano Mall Grounds. A total of 400 saplings of Mahogany were planted in separate areas of El Gawel, Brgy Saravia, Koronadal City. Brgy. Captain Gregorio Presga graced the occasion with emphasis that the tree growing activity was very much beneficial in support with the conservation of Koronadal city’s watershed forest reserve which is primarily located in their barangay.
Meanwhile, this act of planting a tree helps the environment in so many ways such as producing oxygen which filters pollutants to clean the air, and provides shelter for wild life even in times brought by natural catastrophes.

The National Nutrition Council XII had once again blazed the conduct of Training of Trainers on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars last August 9-12, 2016 at Sun City Suites, General Santos City. The training aimed and designed to assist new trainers in helping out BNSs to have common basic knowledge and skills as well as core values and traits that are necessary for them to perform their roles and functions effectively. The training will also provide another pool of trainers, which mainly targets newly designated or appointed Nutrition Action Officers and/or District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators that will later on serve as trainers and supervisors to the existing and new BNSs. A total of 25 participants were certified coming from the different areas of the region. The 4-day training include various training methods which consist of lectures, group discussion, role playing and group activities that made the sessions even more stimulating.

As the issues of malnutrition remain to be a serious concern in the country, specifically in the region, the leadership and drive of the government in ensuring the sustainability of nutrition programs is as well inexorable. Thus, the National Nutrition Council XII conducted another set of batch on Nutrition Program Management training at Sun City Suites, General Santos City last September 6-9, 2016, which was completed by a total of 34 participants coming from the different municipalities, cities and provinces across the region.
The training aimed to capacitate local nutrition workers, particularly the Nutrition Action Officers, to put emphasis on effective planning, implementation, monitoring and sustaining nutrition programs which will also provide strategies in bridging the gap. The 4-day live-in training was divided in 8 modules facilitated by Mrs. Leila S. Moscoso, RND- Professor from the University of Southern Mindanao, Ms. Ma. Ana Uy-Provincial Nutrition Action Officer of South Cotabato, Ms. Judith Janiola-City Nutrition Action Officer of General Santos City and Ms. Apple Espino from UPLB Research Team.

July 29, 2016- NNC XII had finally wrapped up the 2016 Nutrition Month Celebration thru Regional Culmination with the theme, “First 1000 days ni baby pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan” held at The Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City.
Nutrition month is celebrated every July as stipulated in Presidential decree 491. It was noted that this year’s theme aims to bring the spotlight on the significance of the first 1000 days of life which approximately covers a child’s first 2 years. Hence, as explained by NNC, the First 1000 days which is also known as “the golden window of opportunity” will provide a more comprehensive package of nutrition and related interventions to achieve significant changes in reduction of child stunting, underweight and wasting, at the same time contribute to complete child development.
The said event was attended by roughly 150 individuals, coming from the different Regional Line Agencies, Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Health Workers of Koronadal City, Pregnant women and some participating schools in the region. Featured activities during the culminating activity were conducted such as: Nutri-quiz and Complementary Food cooking contest participated by Regional Line Agencies, Nutri-Poem writing contest for NUTRI-DOSE members and nutri-photo exhibit for Nursing Students. Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC) XII had swept all other participating agencies for bagging 1st prizes for both Nutri-quiz and cooking contest having Camote soup as their winning recipe. Moreover, one of the highlights of the event was the Search for “Malusog na Buntis” 2016 which brought so much excitement as well as punctuating heaps of enjoyment from the crowd. Mrs. Michelle Basili of Brgy. Zone IV, Koronadal City was declared the winner, after outshining other 19 contestants. Winners received gift certificates, tokens and certificate of participation and will be recognized during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on October 2016.

In spite of the growing economy in the Philippines, it is still pretty undeniable that poverty and hunger are still on the mainstream issues today. However, the National Nutrition Council had been unflagging to address those problems pushing through the promotion and advocacy in eradicating malnutrition. Hence, to combat this growing concern, significant activities were undertaken.
Part of this endeavor, is the Gulayan sa Masa Program, one of the programs of the government aiming to wipe out hunger and poverty, and also, a food production activity which can access to affordable and ready available vegetables. Related activities undertaken were the Search for “Best Gulayan sa Barangay” and “Gulayan sa Opisina” project , now on its fourth phase and the Search for “Best Breastfeeding Room/ Station” through the initiative of the Regional Nutrition Committee.
The Search for Best Gulayan sa Barangay and Gulayan sa Opisina basically aims to promote food security, increase food supply and to boost awareness of the community on the significance of growing vegetables in their backyards/community that is nutritious, safe and economical. Moreover, these projects are open to all Regional line Agencies (Gulayan sa Opisina) and among the barangays in the region maintained by the Barangay Nutrition Committee and/or organized community groups (Gulayan sa Barangay).
