RO12 TOTThe Institute of Human Nutrition and Food, College of Human Ecology of the University of the Philippines, Los Ba?os (UPLB) as commissioned by the National Nutrition Council conducted the two (2) batches of Training of Trainers on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars. Last September 24-28, 2012 held at RoadHaus Hotel in General Santos City. The objective of the training is to enhance th capacity of the members of the nutrition committees in training the BNSs who have a pivotal roles in the improvement of their community’s nutrition situation. The simultaneous training was attended by a total of 52 participants from the Provinces of Sarangani (17), Sultan Kudarat (25), South Cotabato (2), Cotabato Province (2), and the cities of Koronadal (2) Tacurong (2), and General Santos City (2). NPC Latonio attended the opening on September 24 and gave her inspirational and welcome message.

The participants in the two batches of training ended with a smile on their face for the knowledge attitudes and skills gained, and the friendship that develops. They are all so grateful/thankful to the UPLB team for the excellent facilitation of the training, and to the National Nutrition Council for the opportunity and provision of funding support. Truly, this is a dream come true. They have been a health & nutrition worker for 1-2 decades, but just have had attended this kind of excellent training that is equally important for the effective performance of one’s roles and functions, and eventually well-versed in nutrition program management. NPC Latonio in her closing message, parted with words that commits to generate funds for the roll-out training from Non-Government Organization and will provide technical assistance when needed.

ro12 logoNNC XII family kicked off for a team building activity in General Santos City last December 20-21, 2012.

Topics about leadership and effective communication skills was given eminence. Focused process that builds and develops shared goals, interdependence, trust, commitment and accountability among team members was also highlighted by Miss Veronica Daut, City Nutrition Action Officer of Koronadal City who served as the speaker/lecturer of the team.

Likewise, the group enjoyed the potential for increased camaraderie and getting to know more about their peers. What’s more, games participated by the group made them realized the heart of acquaintance and relationship as a family.

On the other hand, NPC Latonio took the chance to give her workforce a cosset treatment by bringing them on the different spots of the city, savoring the local delicacies and ended the day with an individual health spa treatment.

Moreover, NPC Latonio conferred and leave the team with an inspirational note that “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision”. Indeed, team building is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

ro12 logoThe first Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) meeting was realized last January 25, 2013 at Fred Ann’s Food Haus in Koronadal City. It was organized by NNC XII as the secretariat and presided by the DOH-CHD OIC-Regional Director, Dr. Marlyn W. Convocar.
Twelve (12) regional member agencies were present during the meeting. One of the main agenda of the meeting is the reorganization and revitalization of the Regional Nutrition Committee of which after the thorough deliberation, DOH-CHD XII Regional Director was chosen to continue to chair the Regional Nutrition Committee, and the DA Regional Director as the vice-chair. Composition of the committee will also involve the private sector and non-government organizations to get a better deem of having a public-private partnership to help address the problem of malnutrition in the region.

Meanwhile, The Regional Nutrition Committee Strategic Plan, 2013-2016 was presented and approved by the body for adoption.

RNC Chair Convocar, in her final statement said that she is very optimistic that if the RNC (as an inter agency body) will work together as a team,and vigorously pursue its purpose of providing services to address the problem of malnutrition and to be guided by its principles of being ALIVE and ACTIVE towards the promotion and attainment of food security and improved nutrition, the RNCs’ vision of a food-secured and well-nourished SOCCSKSARGEN will become into reality.

ro12 rnac 2012Around 100 attendees across Region XII gathered for a Nutrition Forum and Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony last December 28, 2012 at Fred Ann’s Place, Koronadal City.

NPC Arceli M. Latonio of the National Nutrition Council XII got an initiative to carry out Nutrition forum before the program proper to further inflate advocacy on different concerned issues.

Breastfeeding dealt by Dr. Fatima A. Emban of DOH-CHD XII was given emphasis on the advocacy to promote and putting up breastfeeding stations in a workplace and public areas like terminals regionwide. Besides, it was recognized that a top performer was credited to region xii in the national awarding on the existence of breastfeeding stations nationwide.

Another topic to the forum was the “Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction” (APIR) campaign addressed by Dr. Leonora A. Lozano from DOH-CHD XII. The presence of the Philippine National Police was also in decency to gave clarity and confirmed precise action taken by the PNP XII towards the APIR campaign (banning of identified powerful fireworks).

Likewise, media practitioners locally participated on the said forum so as the information officers from different regional line agencies, invited guests and awardees.Meanwhile, after the forum, the awarding ceremony followed. Presentation and giving of certificates of appreciation to distinguished guests and certificates of recognition for the awardees was formally awarded.

The 2011 green banner awardees for Outstanding Municipalities in the Province was given to the Municipality of Pigcawayan, Cotabato Province; Municipality of Malungon of Sarangani; and the Municipality of Surallah of South Cotabato. And for the Regional Outstanding Municipality in the Region, it was honored to the municipality of Surallah, Province of South Cotabato. Miss Maria Ana D. Uy, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer and Dr. Neil T. Crespo, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, assisted Mayor Romulo Solivio to receive the award.

Certificates of recognition, tokens and cash award was given to the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in the City, Ms Norma P. Brillo of Koronadal City; Lorena P. Cabillo of Kidapawan City; Maria Delos Santos of General Santos City; and Ma. Theresa B. Dayon of Tacurong City.

Moreover, recognized as Outstanding BNS in the province as declared by the Provincial Nutrition Evaluation Team was awarded to Miss Vivian B. Panague of Cotabato Province; Rosemarie S. Pecto of South Cotabato; Rowena P. Magbanua of Sarangani; and Gina Peniero of Sultan Kudarat who then received corresponding awards such as cash award and token. Miss Lorena P. Cabillo received the Certificate of Recognition as the Outstanding BNS in the region for CY 2011.

Kidapawan City and South Cotabato were given due recognition for maintaining its award being a Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition for 1st round and 2nd round respectively.

The activity was certainly successful with the enormous participation and efforts of the concerned members. NPC Latonio gave her closing message, thanking the public for their presence and appealing to maintain their involvement and contribution for the next years’ awarding.

ro12 ononProvincial Nutrition Committee ( PNC) of Cotabato in collaboration with ACF International conducted its Nutrition Program Management Workshop last February 26- March 1, 2013 at Aj Hi-Time Conference Room, Kidapawan City. Representatives from the different provincial offices and selected NGOs participated the aforementioned activity.

With the leadership of the newly designated Focal Person on Nutrition, Mr. Ely Nebrija, the 4-day activity turned into success. Also, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Arceli M. Latonio shared her time and expertise to guide the PNC in understanding and formulating the Local Nutrition Plan.

Challenging as it was for the new Focal Person and the new set of representatives of the Provincial Nutrition Committee.However, they were guided by the basics of nutrition program management and as the workshop nears the end, everyone’s view was like crystal clear with a commitment to extend their vast efforts in making their nutrition program successful by formulating the PNAP that would address the existing nutritional problems in their province, thus making the province of Cotabato a healthy prefecture.

ro12 cgstraining 13As of 24 January 2013, the National Nutrition Council XII completed the conduct of a one day training on WHO Child Growth Standards which initially focused on BNS from 100% of the barangays in municipalities included in the 2011 top 100 areas with high prevalence of underweight preschool children in the region selected based on 2011 OPT.

Six (6) municipalities in the two (2) provinces in region XII were included to the top 100 municipalities: Arakan and Aleosan of Cotabato Province; Lebak, Sen. Ninoy Aquino, Bagumbayan and Columbio of Sultan Kudarat Province. A total of 129 Barangay Nutrition Scholars and few Barangay Health Workers (BHW) attended the training.

After the training, NPC Latonio, acknowledged the utmost contribution of the BNS and other health workers to the improvement of the nutrition situation in the region. She then challenged all the participants to provide accurate data to ensure correct targeting and/or prioritization of targets/areas so that correct and right intervention will be identified/provided to improve the nutrition situation of their respective areas. She then ended the activity with an inspirational message to all.
