A Consultative meeting vis-à-vis Program Implementation Review attended by the Health Officers and Nutrition Action Officers in the region was done at the Family Country Hotel and Convention Centre last March 21-22 2013. The partnership of the National Nutrition Council XII and CHD- DOH 12 made the aforementioned activity possible.
The activity aimed to ascertain the degree of success with regards to the program implementation on health and nutrition and to further assess for any improvements that can be made to optimize the services delivered.
Factors affecting the program implementation were identified, and from then on, innovations and precise strategic actions were laid to further improve the health and nutrition status of the region.
The 2-day activity might have ended but the real challenge starts from there.

NNC Region 12 participated the 3-day Training and Workshop on Community- Based Management on Moderate Acute Malnutrition ( MMAM) at Grand Ficus Plaza, Kidapwan City last June 5-7 , 2013. The training was conducted by Save the Children International and World Food Programme.
The MAMM PILOT project is an Operational Research that aims to strengthen, scale-up and sustain the implementation of Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) CMAM to cover all barangays in selected municipalities with or without Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and other interventions and implement the integrated MAM Management protocol and decision tool; and, introduce CMAM with the integration of the MAM Management protocol.
The Operational Research that the project will undertake could look at one group who receives PD/Hearth and nutrition education only, and another group who receives the same nutrition education but also a ration of Plumpy’ Sup. This could give an idea of the effectiveness on the prevention of acute malnutrition by nutrition education alone or nutrition education plus a nutritional supplement.
The four selected Municipalities of North Cotabato namely: Aleosan, Kabacan, Matalam and Makilala will be the pilot areas for the duration of 4 months. NNC 12 as the coordinating body on nutrition in the region shall take part to coordinate and assist in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Project, thus making a stand to improve the malnutrition situation of the Region.

The Regional Nutrition Committee XII held its 3rd Quarter meeting along with the project site visit on the good Nutrition Practices in the Region last July 11, 2013. The project visit aims to showcase the nutrition projects with good nutrition practices initiated by selected LGUs in Region XII. This strategy aspires to strengthen the promotion and replication of good nutrition practices to/by other areas.
Its first stop – the Municipality of Malungon.
Hon. Mayor Reynaldo F. Constantino warmly accepted the RNC Members in their municipality during the courtesy call. Throughout the meeting, the Municipal Mayor assures the committee of their utmost efforts to improve the nutritional status of preschool and school children in their locality. He then, enumerated the innovative strategies they had done and hopes that the RNC members will have a fun-filled and educational encounter with the Nutrition practices done and to be implemented by the Municipal Nutrition Committee.
Ms. Roselyn D. Constantino, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer took charge of guiding the delegates into exploring their good nutrition practices. She showcased their (RFC} Nutri Care Center in which undernourished children are adopted, fed and cared until they return to normal statem. Also, the Restore Food For Children (RFC) Nutri Farm was given attention due to its various vegetable plants. Fish ponds and small animals are also established/ available as source of protein. The ingredients used in their feeding came from the backyard itself- Nutri Farm, in which they can be assured that it is organic, safe and fresh. Likewise, the RFC Multi-purpose center strikes the RNC team because the structure which was donated by Congressmen Manny Pacquiao was utilized for feeding underweight children, feeding demo area, breastfeeding room, view deck and RFC Nutri store designed to help raise funds for undernourished children. A long walk led the delegates to the Reform, For a Cause (RFC) Kamaligs- a compound with multi-purpose huts (31 huts) of all 31 barangay. These huts are used to house pregnant women living in far areas weeks before they give birth to ease access to birthing centers thus minimizing complications as well as to house patients from far flung areas who are under medication and served as sleeping quarters for barangay constituents attending activities in the town proper or outside their barangays.
Our last stop- General Santos City featuring its Breastfeeding Stations in public areas. Two of the many sites were visited, the Brgy. North Dadiangas Health Center which strongly promotes breastfeeding along with milk banking. Another area was at the General Santos City Public Terminal. A room was intended for breastfeeding mothers to provide them comfort and privacy. The Government of General Santos City aims to provide all public areas with a breastfeeding for they believe – Breastmilk is BEST for babies.

National Nutrition Council Region XII facilitated the 3- day Child Growth Standard Training for Barangay Health Workers (BHW) last June 18-20, 2013 at Sardonyx Plaza, Cotabato City. Forty-five (45) BHWs attended the said training. Funds utilized for the training was taken from the BHWs organization fund.
During the training, they were evaluated and reviewed as to how far they have known the CGS and by then, the supplementation followed. Nutrition Officers of NNC XII provide lectures, discussion and demonstration on the Child Growth Standard giving emphasis on the accurate way to determine the age-in- months of a child and the consideration in weight and height taking and most especially the proper way of conducting counseling.
Provided with new learnings, the BHW’s of Cotabato City were excited to apply it on field. Despite the challenges in the community, they stood firm in making every possible way to aid in the improvement of Cotabato City’s nutrition situation.

Koronadal City - Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores, Executive Director of National Nutrition Council (NNC) together with the delegates from the different regions from across the country attended the 3rd Management Conference on August 19-23 held at the Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City. The event was hosted by NNC Region XII headed by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Arceli M. Latonio. The group was warmly welcomed by City Councilor Rose Dideles together with City Administrator Cyrus Jose Urbano and the nutrition staff of the city and the region.
The Management Conference is a regular activity of NNC to update its officials on the status of on-going projects and activities of the council. Similarly, this resolves issue/s and determines courses of actions to improve its operation. Along with the conference, the group visited various areas within the region which showcases good nutrition practices as well as cultural practices.
The delegates were toured to the CROWN Kubo, pride of the City Nutrition Committee of Koronadal and served as their project being the recipient of the Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) of NNC. They also had a courtesy call to the South Cotabato Provincial Governor and Chair of the Provincial Nutrition Committee, Hon. Daisy P. Avance-Fuentes who is in full support to the implementation of nutrition programs in the province. After which, the group proceeded to the Municipality of Lake Sebu where they visited the Dolores Farm Resort and tasted the delightful tilapia dishes while enjoying the beautiful scenery of Lake Sebu and experienced the Lake Sebu Zipline - recognized as highest in Asia. Subsequently, they visited the livelihood project of Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) Elizabeth Rafal of Barangay Crossing Rubber in Tupi, South Cotabato and last stop was the Breastfeeding Station of Barangay Apopong in General Santos City.

Eight (8)Outstanding BNS from the different provinces and cities of Region XII fighting for one title – the Regional Outstanding BNS of Region XII. From April to June 2013, the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team visited the 8 BNSs to evaluate their skills and attitude towards the nutrition implementation in their respective barangays.
Last June 25, 2013, they gathered in one venue to measure their knowledge. Inside the NNC XII Conference room happened the 1 hour and a half BNS Exam. Each and every one took time and concentration to be able to comprehend every question given and to provide their best answer. The results from the evaluation score sheets and BNS exam was processed by the RNET and at the end, only one name prevailed and was known as the Region XII’s Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar for 2012.
