7 March 2014, Koronadal City - The National Nutrition Council XII has just finished conducting community mobilizers and peer counsellors training to identified model barangays for Infant and Young Child Feeding Program in the four (4) provinces of Region XII. There were 100 participants who attended the said training. The identified model barangays will serve as the learning ground for other barangays.
The first batch was held at Barangay Veterans of Surallah, South Cotabato last January 17 – 20, 2014, followed by Barangay Kimarayag, Pigcawayan, Cotabato in January 28 – 31, 2014. For Sarangani Province this was held last February 18 – 21, 2014 at Barangay Nagpan, Malungon, Sarangani. And recently in Barangay Central Mangilala, Pres. Quirino of Sultan Kudarat Province from March 4 to 7, 2014. The resource persons/facilitators trained them how to mobilize the community to support and strengthen the program. Counselling skills was emphasized specifically individual counselling of mothers by their peers on the proper feeding practices to improve the nutritional status, growth and development, health, and thus, the survival of infants and young children.
NNC XII tapped the trained health and nutrition workers from the provinces and municipalities who were previously trained on IYCF as resource persons and facilitators.

13 March 2014, Koronadal City - The 45th Regular Meeting of Regional Development Council (RDC) XII was held last March 5, 2014. Salient matters and major agreements reached during the recent regular meeting of the RSDC XII held last 24 February 2014, which was reported by the RSDC Chair Richlie Lyndon L. Magtulis, that needs appropriate action of RDC were presented.
One of the issues raised during the RSDC meeting was the compliance of bus operators on the LTFRB’s directive to designate Breastfeeding seats inside the buses for mothers. It was mentioned that only Yellow Bus Line and Holiday Bus Company in Region XII complied the said directive.
Hence, the first RSDC resolution was passed, RSDC XII Resolution No. 5, S. 2014, reiterating the RDC XII Resolution No. 94, s. 2011 (Requesting the LTFRB to issue a circular/directive requiring all bus operators in Region XII to designate a breastfeeding seat inside their buses) and RDC Resolution No. 79 series of 2012 (Requesting the LTO to conduct inspection of compliance of bus companies in Region XII on designating seats in their buses for breastfeeding mothers and report its findings, including actions taken to improve compliance to this directive, to the RSDC XII).
With the consensus of the body and recognizing the relevance of setting up or designating breastfeeding seat inside the buses, the committee agreed that Yellow Bus Line and Holiday Bus Company will be given due recognition in the form of plaque for their compliance and support pertinent to RDC XII Resolutions, as well as to LTFRB XII’s directive. Hence, RSDC Resolution No. 6, s. 2014 was passed for RDC Action/approval re: Awarding of Yellow Bus Line (YBL) and Holiday Bus Company a Plaque of Recognition as “Breastfeeding-Friendly Buses” in Region XII.
Meanwhile, to strengthen advocacy and generate support of the committee in the dissemination to concerned stakeholders on the promotion and practice of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), the committee agreed to support NNC XII’s advocacy thru RSDC Resolution No. 7, s. 2014, “ Supporting the Advocacy Efforts on the Promotion and Practice of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos”.
All these three (3) RSDC resolutions were passed and approved by the RDC XII on March 5, 2014.

1 April 2014, Koronadal City- “Competent, commitment and responsiveness” the guiding principles RNC hold for a better community. The Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) SOCCSKSARGEN convened during the 1st quarter meeting last March 27, 2014 held at The Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City.
The meeting was presided by DOH XII Asst. Regional Director, Dr. Francisco Mateo. This was participated by NPC Arceli M. Latonio and the 12 representatives of regional line agencies. The regional nutrition situation was presented to guide the committee members for further planning and assessment. The regional nutrition committee discussed the nutrition challenges and updated the strategic action to guarantee a well- nourished region. With this, the committee expressed eagerness and commitment in implementing programs/projects and other interventions to address the nutrition situation in the region.
In addition, the committee was successful in organizing the Regional Nutrition Cluster chaired by the National Nutrition Council Regional Office. The cluster aims to ensure the nutritional status of individuals especially the vulnerable groups: the infants, young children, pregnant and lactating women, elderly people and people with disabilities, will not worsen due to the impact of emergency and disaster. A resolution was passed on the organization the Regional Nutrition Cluster. Responsiveness and neutrality shall embody the newly organized cluster that would deliver quality nutrition services.
The RNC also requested the DOH XII thru HEMS to conduct orientation/ training for the members of the cluster from regional to local level.

24 March 2014, Kidapawan City - The province of North Cotabato conducted its 1st Quarter Nutrition Cluster, PNC and NAOs Joint Meeting held at IPHO conference room, Amas, Kidapawan City. This was attended by the Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, and members of the Provincial Nutrition Committee.
The nutrition cluster members, ACF and Save the Children were also present and reported their accomplishment report on their project - scaling up nutrition program intervention to local government units for a resilient and sustainable local level development program for children and the rehabilitation of identified SAM and MAM preschool children in selected municipalities of the province respectively.
After the presentation of the NGOs, Mr. Ely Nebrija, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer, presented the nutrition situation of the province. Although, the malnutrition prevalence rate of the province is decreasing, Mr. Nebrija reminded the NAOs to still strengthen the programs and projects especially on promoting good nutrition practices. He also reminded the NAOs to review the criteria in selecting Barangay Nutrition Scholars as there are BNSs who were retrenched and replaced by new administration after the Barangay Elections last year.
Meanwhile, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of the National Nutrition Council XII Ms. Arceli M. Latonio, was also invited to give technical assistance and presented some updates on the current regional nutrition situation, the new policy and program developments on nutrition, the upcoming regional OBNS Evaluation and MELLPI, and other nutrition-related activities set for this year. She also reminded the NAOs to update their nutrition action plan and prioritize PPAN actions and activities.
After the meeting, NNC XII distributed breastfeeding and NGF posters, and other IEC collateral materials to all the NAOs.

Koronadal City, Philippines- Regional Nutrition Committee XII held its 2nd Quarter meeting last June 17, 2014 at the Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City.
RNC Chairperson, Teogenes F. Baluma, MD, MHA, MDM, CESO III, Regional Director of DOH XII presided the meeting. National Nutrition Council XII headed by NPC Arceli M. Latonio and 13 representatives of the different RNC members attended the meeting. The committee with the leadership of RD Baluma further reviewed the regional nutrition situation and its causes to better assess the situation. From there, RD Baluma requested the NNC XII to summarize the good practices which can be replicated. Along with the discussion, the 2014 RNC action was reviewed. RNC Chairperson Baluma challenged the regional nutrition committee to innovate strategies on how to transmit health and nutrition information education campaign to the people.
In order to consistency in the nutrition situation, Save the Children- South Central Mindanao Chapter presented their report on their covered areas. Along with the report, SCI also discussed their programs and projects to alleviate malnutrition in the region. RD Baluma suggested to conduct a training on PD Hearth, one of the programs of SCI pertaining to behavioral modification on good health and nutrition practices, among the committee member so as to maximize resources.
Futhermore, during the meeting, the RNC also discussed their nutrition month activities. NPC Latonio, highlighted some activities in which the NNC XII will spearhead such as the Nutrition Month Launching, Development of Recipe to be used during emergencies and disasters and other activities to be conducted during the NM Culmination. NPC Latonio futrher requested the participation of the RNC members on the Search for the Best Gulayan sa Opisina Phase II, which was responded positively by the members. Moreover, the RNC also formulated its special regional activity.
The activity ended with a commitment that the regional nutrition committee shall continue to move forward to improve the nutrition situation.

Koronadal City, Philippines- Health and Emergency Managament Staff, Department of Health Region XII initiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to the Health Sector last June 26, 2014 at DOH Regional Office XII, Cotabato City.
National Nutrition Council XII, as the lead agency of the Nutrition Cluster under the Health Cluster affixed its commitment to ensure the well-being of the affected population during emergency through signing of the MOU. The memorandum of understanding was first drafted last May 14-15, 2014 at the Family country Hotel, General Santos City. Members of the health cluster and various international organizations brainstormed to finalize the MOU. Creating an understanding on the roles and responsibilities of each member agency during emergencies and disaster, the MOU on Health Sector was then signed.
The Memorandum of understanding is not just a paper but rather a committee to ensure the well-being of the people, thus preventing the worsening of health and nutrition status during emergency and disasters.
