ro12 outreachtboli15 September 2014-Koronadal City- Philippines- Characterized by its core values of being ALIVE (Accessibility, Leadership, Innovativeness, Visionary, Efficiency) and ACTIVE (Accountability, Commitment, Transparency, Integrity, Vigilance, Excellence) - the Regional Nutrition Committee of Region XII extends its services to the community.
RNC XII initiated an outreach activity to extend its services to the needy groups particularly the indigenous people of Barangay Lamhaku, T’boli, South Cotabato. This initiative is in collaboration with the Local Government of T’boli thru their DST (Dibu S. Tuan) Kariton Project - initiative of the Municipal Mayor which aims to bring all the basic services to the barangays. During the activity, the Department of Social Welfare & Development XII turned-over the fund amounting to two million five hundred thirty five and six hundred pesos (P2, 535,600.00) for the Supplemental feeding of all the Day Care pupils in the said municipality. Moreover, the RNC members spared assorted goods, medicines, vegetable seeds, school supplies, and other supplies for the literacy project of Save the Children International intended for the Day Care pupils and Indigent families of Brgy. Lamhaku, T’boli, South Cotabato.

This joint activity was led by the RNC XII Chair, Dr. Teogenes F. Baluma with the presence of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) members and its representatives from DOH, DA, DSWD, DILG, DePED, NEDA, DBM, DOLE, POPCOM, DTI, NNC , PIA, DENR and Save the Children. Also present were officials and employees of the municipal government, officials and focal persons from the provincial government, religious/military and civic groups, barangay residents and other stakeholders.

Dr. Teogenes F. Baluma, Regional Director of DOH XII and RNC XII Chairperson, in his message, emphasized the importance of health and nutrition preventive measures that the general public should be aware of and consider. He encouraged the people to avail the services that the national agencies and local government units are providing. He also stressed that the information of health and nutrition workers imparts are important for life survival, thus worsening of health and nutritional status as well as medical conditions can be prevented.

Simultaneous activities were being done, such as medical consultation, immunization, operation tuli, supplementary feeding, Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, seeds distribution, play and learn for children, local birth registration, free haircut and fun learning games.

Hon. Mayor Dibu S. Tuan thanked the Regional Nutrition Committee for the RNC’s initiative and generous act to his constituents in T’boli municipality. In addition, Mayor Tuan highlighted the flagship innovative strategies they have created. The “Kariton ni Dibu”, which delivers package of basic social services particularly to the far flung areas as one of the strategies in developing and improving the community and life of the “katutubo”. He also mentioned and so proud of the Nutri-Pan Bakeshoppe that they have established thru the financial assistance of the Mahintana Foundation, which aims to provide readily available nutritious and affordable breads for their constituents, specifically for the school and preschool children. The nutri-pan is enriched with vitamins and minerals from the vegetables and fruits to meet the micronutrient recommended allowance needed especially the pre-school and schoolchildren. Thus, with this endeavor, he assured the members of the RNC and other nutrition partners that the nutritional status of their children will improve.

The RNC XII left the area with a great joy in their hearts, with such simple act they have done that could changed a life.

ro12 bnstot2014General Santos City- The Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars was held last August 11-15, 2014 at Family Country Hotel and Convention Centre, General Santos City. The training aims to capacitate the provincial, city and municipal nutrition workers to provide appropriate supervision and adequate learning to nutrition front liners- Barangay Nutrition Scholars

The training participants are expected to train BNS to have a common basic knowledge and skills as well as core values and traits that are necessary for them to perform their roles and functions effectively and efficiently.

Thirty (30) participants attended the training composed municipal nutrition action officers, public health nurses, midwives, district/ city nutrition program coordinators and technical staff (JO- NO I & NO II) of NNC region XII. The participants underwent a 5-days session in which they have been taught of the basics as well as updated their knowledge in nutrition.

With the aid of our resource persons: Gladys Mae S. Fernandez, NO III of NNC XII, Veronica M. Daut, CNAO of Koronadal City, Maria Ana D. Uy (PNAO of South Cotabato Province), Nannette C. Cabidog, (CNPC of General Santos City) and Ms. Raquel Buerre (CNPC of Naga City), the participants were equipped with basic knowledge on various aspects such as: life cycle approach to good health and nutrition, steeping up the skills of BNSs, and, nutrition in different life cycle. Before the end of the training, they were required to prepare a draft Barangay Nutrition Action Plan and re-entry plan.

The training of trainers on the Basic Course for BNS is just a simple way of improving the nutrition situation through implementation of an effective nutrition programs/projects and activities. It is true that it is worthwhile to invest on continuing education to improve the country’s nutrition situation.”

ro12 npm2014October 15,2014, General Santos City-National Nutrition Council XII conducted the Nutrition Program Management Training at Tierra Montana Hotel, General Santos City last October 6-10, 2014. There were 22 participants who actively and cooperatively joined the said training composed of City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator, Midwives, Nurses, Representative from the Academe and 3 NNC XII staff.

The five-day live in training was conducted to boost and develop more the ability of local nutrition workers on how to have an effective and efficient planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation as well as sustaining the nutrition programs in the context of the overall local governance and development system.

The participants went through the 4 Phases of the Nutrition Program Management in which they found as a useful tool for LGUs in solving malnutrition and hunger within the context of local governance and development if realized and fulfilled. Participants who were first timers in the training and new to the field of Public Health and Nutrition Management were astonished with the topics and discussions but claimed to have plenty of new knowledge and learning from the activities and exercises.

The training wouldn’t throve without the presence and the shared thoughts and information of the facilitators namely, Ms. Gladys Mae S. Fernandez, NO III of NNC XII, Ms. Leila S. Moscoso, Department Chairperson of USM-CHEFS, Ms. Maria Ana D. Uy, PNAO of South Cotabato and Ms. Raquel B. Buere, CNPC of Naga City.

Participants expressed positive reception and improvement of their knowledge, skills and values on managing their local nutrition programs. As an output, participants submitted a draft of a three-year Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP) 2014-2016 and a re-entry plan. The training ended successfully and bountifully.

ro12 mellpiarticleKoronadal City, Philippines –Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) has just concluded the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI). This annual search aims to assess the efficiency of the local plan implementation, as indicated by the outreach of activities undertaken relative to local nutrition action plan, funds expended as well as the management and support given by the local chief executives and other implementing agencies.

The team headed by NNC XII Nutrition Program Coordinator Arceli M. Latonio, together with the members of Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) from DILG, DSWD, NEDA, DOH, DA and Save the Children, who monitored and evaluated the provinces of Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato and Cotabato province. Sample municipalities and their contenders for the Outstanding Municipality in the region were also visited such as Malungon & Maitum of Sarangani; Norala and Tantangan of South Cotabato; Isulan and President Quirino of Sultan Kudarat; Midsayap, Banisilan, and Pigcawayan of Cotabato Province, and the cities of Tacurong, Kidapawan and General Santos.

After searching the best of all the best among the contenders, the Municipality of Malungon got the highest score for Outstanding Municipality in the Region. Besting other municipalities of Region XII, this is their second year to receive the said award.

NNC XII will likewise recognize the Outstanding Province in the Region, which will be awarded to South Cotabato Province, who once again proved their best in implementing nutrition programs.

Evidently deserving the awards, the LGU’s especially the outstanding implementers on nutrition, represented by their Local Chief Executives (LCE’s), will be recognized to receive the green banner award, certificate and token during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on October 29, 2014.

ro12 rnac2014October 30, 2014- Koronadal City- The National Nutrition Council Region XII holds the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) last October 29, 2014 at the Convention Center, The Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City. There were over 270 guests composed of Local Chief Executives and representatives, Provincial/Municipal and City Nutrition Action Officers, City/District Nutrition Program Coordinators, Regional Directors from the Different Line Agencies, Regional Nutrition Committee Members, Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team, Chairpersons and Members of the Local Nutrition Committees, Representatives from the Academe (USM & SCC), Barangay Nutrition Scholars, ICON members, Media Partners, various Nutrition Stakeholders, Awardees and Winners of various regional activities. The said annual event was organized to recognize the individuals, LGU’s and other partners who gave their best in delivering health and nutrition-related services in their respective areas/communities.

The event was graced by the Governor of South Cotabato, Hon. Daisy Avance-Fuentes as the keynote speaker. She challenged the LGU’s to make a paradigm of a well-planned nutrition program and think one or more of innovative ways in helping the community to become healthy and well nourished. City Councilor Oscar Pagunsan of Koronadal City was also present in behalf of the City Mayor Peter B. Miguel, who gave praises to the popular version of the revised nutritional guidelines for Filipinos – the ten Kumainments. He imposed its importance to Filipino’s healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile, Regional Director of the Department of Health RO XII, Dr. Teogenes F. Baluma inspired the audience and emphasized unity, solidarity and camaraderie among LGUs, community and family to solve the malnutrition problem.

In this annual event, not only outstanding implementers of nutrition program were recognized but also other stakeholders and regional line agencies who participated during the Nutrition Month culmination activities and various contests/activities initiated by NNC XII. The longest serving BNS who rendered its services for more than 30 years was also recognized.

As bound in the 2013-2016 Regional Nutrition Committee Strategic Plan: “The RNC XII shall promote household food security through home, school and community food production and provision of material support for livelihood and income generating projects”, the RNC XII had strategized innovative measures to promote food security.

Through the support and initiative of the RNC XII in promoting food security as well as to have safe and nutritious sources of vegetables, the Search for the Best Gulayan sa Opisina and Best Gulayan sa Barangay is on its 2nd year.

Last July 2014, the RNC XII launched its second phase of the aforementioned contests along with the celebration of the Nutrition Month. NPC Arceli M. Latonio, of the NNC XII promoted the said search. As of September 15, 2014, the NNC XII has already evaluated four (4) regional offices BJMP XII, DepEd XII, DOLE XII and NEDA XII respectively. There are two more offices: DOH XII and DBM XII to be evaluated.

Furthermore, the Search for the Best Gulayan sa Barangay is still on-going. As specified in the criteria, there shall be one entry per province/ city. The committee finished evaluating nominated barangays of Tacurong City and General Santos City. Entries from the provinces of Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato and Cotabato and from cities of Kidapawan and Koronadal will be evaluated soon.

The winners of these contests will be recognized during the 2014 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on October 29, 2014.
