General Santos City - 29 participants composed of District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/CNPCs), City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (C/MNAOs), Nutririonist-Dietitians and other technical staff who are designated trainers in their respective areas, gathered during the Training of Trainers on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) held on September 9-13, 2013 at Family Country Hotel and Convention Centre in General Santos City.
The training team include: Ms. Camille C. Marron, Training Assistant of Pollution Control Association of the Philippines (PCAPI) Region IV-A Chapter, PNAO Maria Ana D. Uy (South Cotabato), CNAO Veronica M. Daut (Koronadal City), Nutrition Program Coordinator Arceli M. Latonio, Nutrition Officer III Gladys Mae S. Fernandez and secretariat from NNC XII. A combination of training methods were used by the trainers such as lectures, group discussions, exercises, role playing and games using the module developed by the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food (IHNF) of the College of Human Ecology of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in partnership with the National Nutrition Council (NNC).
The training aims to equip provincial, city and municipal level nutrition workers in conducting training for new and existing BNSs. Part of the capacity building for BNSs is to educate them on their basic knowledge and skill and their expected roles in the barangay nutrition program management.
NNC XII is very hopeful that this will capacitate nutrition workers and impart their knowledge to the BNSs for them to be able to contribute to the improvement of the barangay nutrition situation and to the achievement of the goals of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) and, in turn, the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).

General Santos City - "Part of our efforts to decrease maternal and infant deaths is the nutrition management. You are mostly reliable in maintaining the nutritional status of infants and mothers in your respective areas", introductory statement of DOH-CHD XII Regional Director Teogenes F. Baluma during the Training on Nutrition Management held at Family Country Hotel and Convention Centre in General Santos City. Thirty (30) participants composed of provincial, city and municipal nutrition action officers (P/C/MNAOs), District Nutrition Program Coordinators (DNPCs) and other technical staff on nutrition in the region attended the said training.
Ms. Pamela A. Gonzales and Ms. Marcelina C. Miranda, both University Research Associates from University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), were among the trainers including the local trainers from the region in the person of PNAO Maria Ana D. Uy of South Cotabato, CNAO Veronica M. Daut of Koronadal City, Nutrition Program Coordinator Arceli M. Latonio and Nutrition Officer III Gladys Mae S. Fernandez. Techniques on effective planning, implementation, monitoring and sustaining nutrition programs were greatly emphasized, in the context of the overall local governance and development system.
During the five-day training, participants were able to update their knowledge and skills specifically in the area of nutrition program planning and management. Thus, the training serves as one of the approaches in addressing hunger and malnutrition and at the same time, as a key action towards the capacity building schemes for nutrition workers in the region.

Along with the celebration of the Kalimudan Festival, a joint meeting of the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) and the Nutrition Actions officers was conducted, of which the National Nutrition Council XII took the opportunity to publicize the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. Last November 19, 2013, the Provincial Nutrition Committee, Municipal Nutrition Action Officers and BNSs of Sultan Kudarat pledged to commit in the dissemination of the Ten Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos led by NNC XII Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Arceli M. Latonio. The activity started with the presentation of the Revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos by NPC Latonio. She cited the objective of each message in addressing problems in nutrition. IEC materials such as NGF flyers and fans were also given. With this, the participants gained new knowledge and greater awareness in combating hunger and malnutrition.
After the presentation, the participants signed the pledge of commitment. Each signature symbolizes unity and support in the Region-wide promotion of nutrition messages for a well-nourished SOCCKSARGEN.

National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region XII headed by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC) Arceli M. Latonio will be conducting four (4) batches of orientation on Community Support for Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Program. The latter aims to orient the health and nutrition workers that have been previously trained on IYCF counseling from 2007-2011 by the NNC.
The said activity will be conducted this October and to be attended by selected participants from all over the region, composed of two (2) participants per municipality and city and three (3) per province.
The first batch was conducted last October 8-11, 2013 at SunCity Suites in General Santos City. One of the resource persons was Ms. Raquel B. Buere, City Nutrition Program Coordinator of Naga City. The three (3) remaining batches are scheduled on: October 15-18, October 21-24 and October 22-25, all to be held at Family Country Hotel and Convention Centre in General Santos City. RNPC Latonio together with the PNAO of South Cotabato Maria Ana D. Uy, and the NNC Staff from the region will facilitate the remaining batches.
This orientation will introduce the basic eight (8) steps needed to organize and mobilize community support groups for implementing and expanding IYCF program. Part of the activity includes the conduct of practicum in one of the selected barangays in the city. In addition, participants are expected to roll-out the training and to organize IYCF support groups and provide mentoring and supervision to peer counsellors.

The Province of North Cotabato holds the 2nd Gov. Lala Barangay Nutrition Scholars Congress 2013 last November 27 – 28, 2013. The congress aims to help recognize the importance of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in the implementation of nutrition programs province-wide, improve their skills, and address issues and concerns. It also aims to build camaraderie and boost the morale of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars. There were about 600 Barangay Nutrition Scholars from the 18 municipalities in the province attended the said congress including Kidapawan City. The said activity was supported by no less than Gov. Emmylou Lala Taliño-Mendoza, who is very supportive to nutrition programs/projects implemented by the province.
One of the learning sessions lined up was the presentation and discussion of the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. They invited the National Nutrition Council XII to present the Ten (10) revised messages in the NGF. There’s a new set of messages under the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. This was formulated by a technical working group composed of experts from various fields and organized by DOST-FNRI. The guidelines have been approved by the NNC Governing Board on 31 October 2012. Unlike the 2000 guidelines, the 2012 guidelines include the reasons for the food-based behavior. The objective of this is to improve the dietary and related health practices of Filipinos towards improving the nutrition situation.
After the presentation, the delegates pledged their commitment to support especially in the promotion and dissemination as well as to practice these messages.

In support to the Governments program towards alleviating hunger and poverty- “Gulayan sa Masa”, National Nutrition Council XII spearheads the Gulayan sa Opisina Project last July 31, 2013 as part of the Nutrition Month Culmination Celebration.
The Gulayan sa Opisina project aspires the planting and production of organically-grown vegetables by the government employees. Increasing their awareness on the benefits of vegetable consumption to help reduce malnutrition and prevent the onset of non-communicable diseases as well as promoting the different technologies of planting vegetables such as raised beds, containerized and bag gardening.
Last September 11, 2013, NEDA XII headed by RD Arturo Valero,launched their Gulayan sa Opisina Project in support to NNC XII program.Utilizing a vacant lot within their office premise they grouped themselves into 3 functional working committee to facilitate the maintenance of the gulayan project.
Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Arceli M. Latonio together with the NNC XII staff, evaluated NEDA’s Gulayan sa Opisina Project last October 25, 2013. A huge transformation was seen – from an empty lot into a masterpiece, seeds grown into green and healthy plants. Variety of technologies was used to maximize the limited space for 18 kinds of vegetables.
