“Let us continue to support the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition or PPAN, particularly the implementation of the First 1000 Days Program to prevent stunting and further improve the nutrition situation in Metro Manila”, says City Nutrition Action Officer Mrs. Melissa S. Oreta in her acceptance speech after being elected as the President of the Association of Nutrition Action Officers of NCR (ANAO-NCR) Inc. for 2020-2022.
The election was held during the Association’s meeting on 13 November 2019 at The Legend Villas in Mandaluyong City. CNAO Oreta or Chef Melissa to many, particularly to Malabonians, will be the 3rd President of the Association, which was organized in 2010 and SEC registered in 2012. Its first President is Mandaluyong City’s former CNAO and now Mayor, Carmelita “Menchie” A. Abalos, who was also elected President of the Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA). The second ANAO-NCR President is Dr. Benjamin Yson of the City of Manila.

Malabon City believes that zero stunting can be achieved by focusing on the first 1000 days of life which starts from pregnancy up to two (2) years of the child.
The first 1000 days of life is called the “golden window of opportunity” for nutrition and related interventions to have a positive impact on the child’s physical and mental development. Focusing on the F1K will ensure that pregnant women and their children up to two (2) years old are given access to quality health care and nutrition services.

The officers and board members of the City/District Nutrition Program Coordinators (C/DNPC) of Metro Manila Association together with National Nutrition Council – NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa Federizo and Nutrition Officer II Theresa Rivas visited the Municipality of Pulilan, Bulacan for their annual Technical Exchange and Team Building on September 12-14, 2019. The Municipality of Pulilan in Bulacan is a Nutrition Honor Awardee since 2007.
The Association conducted the two (2) activities in Pulilan, Bulacan with the theme “One Team. One Goal. Together as ONE!”. It was participated in by eleven (11) C/DNPCs from the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Valenzuela, Marikina, San Juan, Makati, Manila, Pasay, Paraňaque and Quezon City.

Representatives from the local government units (LGU) in the National Capital Region (NCR) visited Taguig City on October 11, 2019 to learn from the city’s good practices on nutrition program management as well as innovative projects on nutrition. Taguig City was awarded with the Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) in 2019. The NHA is the highest award on nutrition given by the National Nutrition Council.
The learning visit was attended by 39 participants composed of city nutrition action officers (CNAOs), city nutrition program coordinators (CNPCs) and barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) from the 15 LGUs in NCR except Caloocan and Las Piňas City. NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa Federizo and Nutrition Officers Theresa Rivas and Mary Agnes Beatrice Menorca facilitated the conduct of the activity together with the Taguig City nutrition secretariat. The learning visit was conducted by NNC-NCR as part of the LGU Mobilization strategy of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition.

As part of the LGU Mobilization strategy of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN), the National Nutrition Council – NCR conducted a Planners’ Forum on Nutrition: Integrating Nutrition in Local Development Plans and Budgets on September 10, 2019 at Richville Hotel, Mandaluyong City. It was attended by 30 participants composed of city/municipal planning and development officers and coordinators of the 17 local government units (LGU) in Metro Manila.
The forum aimed to increase the participants’ awareness and understanding of the alarming state of malnutrition in Metro Manila and in the country and develop strategies in integrating nutrition concerns in the local plans and budgets.

To further scale up local nutrition actions and address stunting and other forms of malnutrition, the National Nutrition Council in National Capital Region conducted a workshop on integrating nutrition in local development plans and budgets on September 23-27, 2019 at Bali Village Hotel in Tagaytay City. The workshop was participated in by local nutrition committee (LNC) planning core groups of the cities of Marikina, Caloocan, San Juan, Pasay, Navotas, Valenzuela and the municipality of Pateros.
The workshop participants realized the need to collaborate, integrate and scale up the implementation of the First 1000 Days to prevent and reduce stunting. During the workshop and interactive sessions, the participants appreciated the need to make nutrition a priority development challenge in the formulation of their Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) and integrate the PPAN programs in their local plans and budgets. The PPAN or the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition is the country’s framework in improving the nutrition situation.
