It is in giving that we receive, a phrase proven true by the eighty-five (85) mothers who participated in the 3rd Mass Milk-letting Activity of the Quezon City Human Milk Bank (QCHMB) last August 8, 2018 at the SB Hall of Quezon City General Hospital. The said activity was a venue for mothers to donate their breastmilk which in turn had the sense of fulfilment by extending their help to the premature infants, those with illness and mothers who cannot express at all or enough for their infants. In contrary to the common belief that donating breastmilk would not provide enough for their infants, mothers present during the event were more than willing to donate after hearing the lecture conducted by specialized doctors and real life experiences shared by breastfeeding champions.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) namely, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease are already considered a universal public health concern. NCDs are a result of both genetic and behavioral factors (WHO, 2017). They account for 60% of total deaths globally and 40% burdens the people with the disease annually (WPRO, 2009). Based on the 2017 report of the Quezon City Health Department, 6 out of the 10 leading causes of mortality are NCDs namely, cancer, hypertension, myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and disease of the heart.
Unfortunately, Filipino adults are continuously exposed to the different risk factors of NCDs including unhealthy diet. Based on the National Nutrition Survey of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, a steady decline of fruits and vegetable in the consumption of Filipinos was observed while demand for meat continuously increased. Low consumption of fruits and vegetables will make Filipinos vulnerable in developing NCDs in the future. Increased consumption of meat is not only harmful for one’s health but it also has a significant impact in the environment. This is where “healthy diet equals healthy environment” comes into play. Meat production releases more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than cars, trains, ships, and airplanes combined.

Malabon City - Improving the nutrition situation of the city has always been a priority of the city government of Malabon under the leadership of Mayor Antolin Oreta III. Feeding programs are conducted every year since 2016 to improve food intake of underweight children identified through Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus.

Cooks of partner carinderias followed the prescribed cycle menu of the city nutritionists to achieve the required caloric content of the meals served to the beneficiaries.
Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) conducted series of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon and Mothers’ Classes to increase knowledge of caregivers of KKC beneficiaries on proper child care and basic nutrition. Parents of beneficiaries were also encouraged to enroll in the “Angking Galing” livelihood project of Ricky Reyes for additional source of income.
