GENERAL SANTOS CITY- With the growing concern in facing the giant pandemic (COVID-19), the Local Government Unit of General Santos City Local Chief Executive Ronnel Chua Rivera, in coordination with the City Nutrition Council, is beefing up efforts to secure the welfare of the malnourished children.

Last week, the LGU had activated its 70 community kitchens of Daycare centers to prepare a one-dish meal for children aging 6 months until 10 years old, prioritizing the identified malnourished children. This initiative astoundingly fed around 35,000 children serving the densely populated barangays of Calumpang, Fatima and Tambler. By taking this step forward, the LGU plans to expand the implementation in the next days to cover all 26 barangays in the city.

The municipality of Tampakan which is known as one of the largest copper resources in the Philippines prioritized vegetable cultivation to ensure food security. Truly, efforts have been fruitful since it will be a big help especially during this pandemic crisis caused by Coronavirus-19 (CoViD-19). In relevance to the first message of the Nutrition Cluster Advisory No. 1 s. 2020 or the Nutrition Cluster Guidelines on LGU Nutrition Actions Relative to COVID-19 which is to promote good nutrition by emphasizing to the general public the importance of eating a variety of nutritious foods consistent with the Ten Kumainments to help to naturally strengthen the body’s immune system against COVID-19, the local government unit of Tampakan through the initiative of the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Leonard T. Escobillo included vegetables in their food packs along with canned goods, noodles and rice. The first batch yield 3,500 packs which consist of vegetables like Talong, Okra, Kalabasa, Ampalaya, Radish, Sayote and Upo which was already distributed to 5 barangays of the municipality.

People with big hearts will find their way to extend a helping hand to their community. A neighborhood in Purok 3, Brgy. Poblacion, Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat initiated by Ms. Edes B. Vijandre through their Purok President Mr. Maxian Tubio thought of doing something to help their local community coming up of what they call, “Neighborhood Kitchen”. Since the food packs which usually consist sardines, instant noodles and rice lacks nutrients, generous neighbors pitched in to feed 24 at-risk families who lost their means of income because of COVID-19. They used the kitchen owned by former Brgy. Chairman Lorraine Llavore to prepare nutritious meals which most of the vegetable were freshly picked from their backyard gardens. By this means, they can augment their neighbor’s meal and now on their fifth day.
