rnac 2017 edited picThe National Nutrition Council – National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) of the Department of Health recognized outstanding local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila that have shown exemplary performance in nutrition program implementation and management during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held on 28 July 2017 at the Novotel Manila Araneta, Quezon City.

The RNAC serves as the culminating event of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and the Search for the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS).  Around 230 participants from all over Metro Manila including Mayors, Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) and members of the local nutrition committees (LNCs), BNSs and other nutrition stakeholders attended the event.

MELLPI is the monitoring and evaluation strategy of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) which is the country’s blueprint in addressing hunger and malnutrition.  It is conducted annually by an inter-agency Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) to monitor and assess the efficiency and effectiveness of nutrition and related programs and projects implemented by the LNCs in the 17 LGUs in NCR.  Desk review and interview with members of the LNCs are conducted at the city level while selected barangays are visited for validation.”, NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo explained.

NNC NCR stakeholders2017 editedThe National Nutrition Council - National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) urged the public to make healthy eating a habit for life during the recently conducted Stakeholders’ Forum in line with the celebration of the 43rd Nutrition Month this July.

Anchored on the 2017 Nutrition Month theme: “Healthy diet, gawing habit – FOR LIFE!”, the forum aims to increase awareness of the public on the importance of eating a healthy diet which protects against malnutrition and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases and certain types of cancer.

Around 250 participants from the different local government units in NCR, DSWD centers and residential care facilities, private schools and universities as well as partner agencies from the government and non-government organizations attended the forum held at Manila Grand Opera Hotel last July 25.

NGO Forum picPartners from non-government organizations (NGO) in the National Capital Region (NCR) expressed their support and commitment in the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 during the 4th Regional NGO Forum held on June 30, 2017 at the Berjaya Hotel, Makati City.

Since 2014, the National Nutrition Council at the National Capital Region has been convening the NGOs with nutrition and related services and programs within Metro Manila in a forum. The forum became a yearly event as requested by the NGO partners since it serves as a good venue in sharing their experiences and good practices in implementing nutrition programs and projects. The forum also allows NNC-NCR and NGO partners to build linkages and expand their nutrition network.

media caravan picThe National Nutrition Council-NCR in partnership with its regional media group NCR Nutrition Communication Resource Group (NCR2) conducted the 2nd School Media Caravan on July 5, 2017 at the Pasig Elementary School Gymnasium, Pasig City.  The event was held in cooperation with the Pasig City Nutrition Committee in support of the celebration of the 43rd Nutrition Month with the theme, “Healthy diet, gawing habit – FOR LIFE!”

The school media caravan is a strategy conceptualized by NNC-NCR and NCR2 to promote good nutrition among school children and high school students.  Healthy eating habits should be instilled among children and adolescents because these habits are often carried into adulthood and may last a lifetime. Teaching them good eating habits as part of a healthy lifestyle will help prevent stunting and obesity as well as diseases such as heart diseases, hypertension, and diabetes later in life.

bf article revBabies who were breastfed, especially those who were breastfed for 2 years and beyond, are the most fortunate children the world over. Their mothers gave them the greatest gift they will receive in their whole lifetime - the benefits of a mother's breastmilk. They are fortunate because breastmilk contains all the nutrients they need for their early period of growth & development. This miraculous milk also gives them the antibodies they need to fight off infection and diseases.

As one of the efforts of the city to promote breastfeeding, the Breastfed Baby Contest of Makati was held last year when mothers who exclusively breastfed their babies were invited to join. Months after the contest, the babies are still winners because their mothers continue to breastfeed them.

Last year's Breastfed Baby Contest winner and two other participants have attested to that. Jhodyne Galon Corpuz, mother of last year's 1st placer, said that she breastfeeds her baby, "Dahil ito 'yung number 1, the best milk for Baby". She explained that breastmilk has many vitamins and minerals and it also contains disease-fighting substances that protect the baby from sickness.
