bns confMore than 300 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) from all over Metro Manila attended the 2016 Annual Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ Regional Conference with the theme “Malnutrisyon: Kilalanin at Sugpuin” held on 18 November 2016 at the Heritage Hotel, Pasay City. It was organized by the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholar of NCR, Inc. in partnership with the National Nutrition Council – National Capital Region (NNC-NCR).

The BNSs are front-line barangay-based nutrition workers who provide basic nutrition and related services and serve as the link between the service providers and the families. This year’s conference focused on the various forms of urban malnutrition and how the BNSs can help prevent and manage them by knowing how they are identified, understanding their causes and consequences, and identifying the strategies to combat them in the public health setting.

In her message, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Ms. Milagros Elisa V. Federizo congratulated the Regional Federation of BNSs for organizing the conference yearly to update them on relevant nutrition topics and improve their competencies. She further challenged them to work even harder to prevent and control the double burden of malnutrition in the region.

taguig visits

The cities of Mandaluyong and Taguig, two of the outstanding LGUs in NCR, extended their support and assistance to each to raise the level of nutrition in the region.

Being the recipient of the Green Banner Award for three consecutive years in the region, Taguig City is now elevated as a Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Awardee at the national level.

In preparation for the 2017 national evaluation for their bid to the 1st Year CROWN Maintenance Award, the Taguig City Nutrition Secretariat and some members of the city nutrition committee led by City Nutrition Action Officer Julie Bernabe visited Mandaluyong City on September 27, 2016 to learn from the latter’s good practices on nutrition program management and see their documentation reports.

best in NPM caloocanThe year 2013 was a transition period for Caloocan City, having a new administration after the elections. The city’s nutrition committee was inactive and not functional and the hiring of job order personnel including thirty (30) Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and two (2) Nutritionist-Dietitians (NDs) were put on hold. Through the advocacy efforts of City Health Officer Dr. Maybelle Sison and the city nutrition program coordinators (CNPCs), ten (10) new BNSs were hired as Job Orders and the two (2) NDs were retained.

The limited human resource for nutrition both at the city and barangay levels proved to be challenging in implementing the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN). In 2014, the city had the lowest percent coverage of children weighed and measured during the Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus among all the local government units (LGU) in NCR. What was even more alarming then was that city ranked 5th and 3rd among the 17 LGUs based on their prevalence of underweight and overweight, respectively. A clear indication of the presence of a double burden of malnutrition in the city.
