cdnpc confStunting is an irreversible outcome of poor nutrition which causes children to have diminished cognitive and physical development, reduced productive capacity and poor health. Interventions focusing on the First 1000 Days of life are proven to be effective in preventing undernutrition, thus, became the focus of the 31st Annual C/DNPC Regional Conference with the theme “Stop Stunting: Invest in the First 1000 Days” held on September 9, 2016 at the Century Park Hotel, Malate, Manila.

The conference conducted in partnership with the National Nutrition Council – National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) was attended by around 100 C/DNPCs together with guests and partners from the hospital and academe. It tackled the importance of investing in nutrition during the First 1000 Days as a cost-effective and economical strategy to stop stunting. By providing good nutrition during this critical period, we do not only prevent stunting but also other forms of malnutrition such as wasting, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.

In her keynote message, Senator Risa Hontiveros recognized stunting as a major health and nutrition problem in the country that can be reduced not just by feeding the child but giving the right amount and kind of food every day. Similarly, children should be provided with a caring and loving environment and protected from diseases.

Tsibug7Persistence, Action, Service, Innovation and Good Governance best describe the Pasig City Nutrition Committee (CNC) chaired by former First Lady and City Mayor of Pasig from 2013-2016, Honorable Maria Belen A. Eusebio.  During her term, Mayor Maribel made nutrition a priority program of her administration.

Mayor Maribel has always envisioned Pasigueños to be empowered, educated, healthy and productive citizens residing in self-reliant barangays. Through her expert stewardship, the CNC, with its goal of improving the health and nutritional status of the Pasigueños, continued to reinvent and innovate in implementing nutrition interventions.

The CNC intensified its Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Program to ensure that proper nutrition is provided during the First 1000 Days of the child. Breastfeeding and proper complementary feeding is widely promoted through lectures, film showing, counseling, cooking demonstration and distribution of nutrition information, education and communication (IEC) materials.  The Breastfeeding Support Groups remains active and functional through the continuous mentoring and supervision of the nutritionist-dietitians of the city. Pregnant and lactating women are provided with iron-folate supplements purchased by the city government. Service Delivery Networks (SDN) were created by the Pasig Health Department in coordination with the private birthing facilities. To create an enabling environment for breastfeeding mothers and their babies, fully equipped breastfeeding stations were established in all the health centers, at the Pasig City Hall and other government facilities. “Buntis Congress” is regularly held to influence pregnant mothers to breastfeed their infants.

collab taguigThe inter-agency city nutrition committee (CNC) of Taguig led by its Chair, Mayor Maria Laarni L. Cayetano, believes that together they can significantly reduce, if not eliminate malnutrition in their city. With this mindset, they analyzed the causes of under and overnutrition among children and using the multi-sectoral approach, planned nutrition actions that will bring about nutrition improvement.  They improved their targeting by focusing on the undernourished children and their families, pregnant and lactating mothers and other groups affected by malnutrition. The city government allocated Php 22 million to enable the CNC to implement a comprehensive nutrition program.

valenzuela city nutrition committeeValenzuela City -- In 2009, the prevalence rate of undernutrition among preschool children was at 4.15%.  Baseline school weighing of day care children revealed a 15.6% prevalence rate of undernutrition. These figures alarmed former Mayor and now Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian.  He immediately instructed for the revitalization of the City Nutrition Committee (CNC). He believed that the CNC should be first made active and functional in order to efficiently plan measures to reduce the malnutrition rate in the city. The CNC went to work immediately and conducted a thorough assessment of the nutrition situation and identified those affected by malnutrition, how many they are, their location and the causes of malnutrition.  All these data helped the CNC in deciding on the appropriate nutrition actions that will be implemented.
