Adorna who was commissioned by the National Nutrition Council to review the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) implementation in the country visited the San Juan City. They conducted interviews with the members of the city and selected barangay nutrition committees and beneficiaries of their nutrition program. They also had the opportunity to discuss with CNC Chair and City Mayor Guia G. Gomez their preliminary findings and recommendations to improve the city’s implementation of the PPAN. During that visit, Mayor Gomez gave her commitment to strengthen their city nutrition program. True to her word, she started “re-engineering” their city nutrition program by revitalizing their CNC and having them trained on nutrition program management.

ews turn-overThe National Nutrition Council – NCR turned-over the equipment for the implementation of the Nutrition Early Warning System for Food and Nutrition Security (NEWS-FNS) to Navotas City on March 20, 2017 during the city’s Flag Raising Ceremony at the Navotas City Hall.

The equipment were turned-over to Navotas City Mayor and City Nutrition Committee Chair John Reynald Tiangco by NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa Federizo. NEWS-FNS Team Leader and City Nutrition Action Officer Reynaldo Monroy was present to witness the event together with the city councilors, members of the NEWS-FNS City Core Group and Household Data Collectors.

cdnpc tech exchangeThe City/District Nutrition Program Coordinators (C/DNPCs) of Metro Manila visited Tagaytay City for this year’s Technical Exchange on February 23 where they observed and learned the city’s good practices on nutrition program management and implementation.

The Technical Exchange is an annual activity conducted by the C/DNPCs of Metro Manila Association with funding support and technical assistance from the National Nutrition Council – NCR.  As part of their continuing education program, the activity provides the members with the opportunity to gain insights and new learnings from an outstanding local government unit (LGU) in NPM such as Tagaytay City being a Nutrition Honor Awardee.  Tagaytay City is also the home of the 2015 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (NOBNS) Danilo Posion making the city a good venue for learning. 

The activity was attended by 22 members from the 11 LGUs in NCR together with NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa Federizo and Nutrition Officer II Theresa Rivas.  

 

qchd health packageThe Quezon City Health Department currently implements a comprehensive health package program for the sick and bedridden elderly of Quezon City. A multi-disciplinary team of nutritionist, health center medical doctor, dentist, nurse and medical technologist home visits the sick elderly to provide the needed health and nutrition services.

The package of home health services include risk and nutritional assessment and counseling, medical and dental check-up, pneumococcal and flu vaccination, random blood sugar testing, blood pressure monitoring and provision of free medicines.  It also includes transport assistance to the hospital for sick elderly that needs special care.

From September to November of 2016, 599 elderly were profiled and visited in their homes.  Based on the results of the initial assessment of those visited, the five (5) leading causes of morbidity are post-stroke, hypertension, undernutrition, diabetes mellitus and diabetes with hypertension.  On the other hand, the five (5) leading causes of mortality are pneumonia, stroke, all forms of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 

ND Lorena Parina counseling the employees on healthy diet using the Pinggang PinoyThe Parañaque City Nutrition Office conducted a Nutrition Kitchen Mobile Caravan as part of the week-long celebration of Paranaque’s 19th Cityhood Anniversary.

The week-long celebration was held at the Parañaque City Hall from February 8 to 13 with a series of activities prepared by different departments such as job fairs, medical and dental caravans, and discount caravans for the employees and the constituents.

The Nutrition Kitchen Mobile Caravan was part of the “Serbisyo Lang Po Buhay” Caravan which aims to promote proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle through provision of hot meals and nutrition education through mother and children’s classes and/or nutrition counselling.

On February 8, the City Nutrition Office organized a Nutrition Caravan at the parking lot of the city hall where the mobile kitchen was set up and was used to prepare and distribute pancakes, macaroni soup, pancakes, and chocolate drink to around 200 people.

forum on financing revFinancing the Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP) is essential to a successful implementation of nutrition programs. While there are various possible sources of funds for the nutrition programs and projects, access to these funds remains to be a challenge to many local nutrition program implementers.

In response to the need for clear guidance on budgetary allocations for the local implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN), the National Nutrition Council at the National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) gathered more than 100 delegates in a Forum on Financing the Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP) on February 21, 2017 at the Century Park Hotel in Manila.

Delegates were composed of the members of the Local Nutrition Committee from the 17 Local Government Units (LGUs) in Metro Manila such as Department of the Interior and Local Government Municipal/City Directors, Nutrition Action Officers, Focal Nutritionist – Dietitians, Budget and Planning Officers. Members of the Regional Nutrition Committee and Regional Management Group were also present during the event.
