09 2021 Health Risks of Obesity

Despite wide promotion on achieving healthy lifestyle, trends for overweight and obesity have been increasing over time. According to the 2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey by the DOST-FNRI, 28.7% of Filipino adults aged 20 to 59 years old are overweight while 9.3% are obese.

The term obesity refers to excessive fat accumulation often leading to a health risk.

09 2021 Childhood Cancer

Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, approximately 400,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer yearly? Moreover, beyond 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each day.

Unfortunately, the probability of survival of a child diagnosed with cancer is dependent on its residing country. As children living in low or middle-income countries have limited access to healthcare services, their survival rate is low by 20% while children located in high-income countries have 80% likelihood of surviving. 

09 2021AIP Palawan

National Nutrition Council - MIMAROPA conducted another leg of online workshop in integrating nutrition in Annual Investment Program to the local government units of Palawan last 6-10 September 2021 attended by Nutrition Action Officers, Health Officers, Planning Officers, Budget Officers, and Committee on Health Chairpersons. Fifteen municipalities (Aborlan, Agutaya, Bataraza, Brooke’s Point, Coron, Culion, Cuyo, Dumaran, El Nido, Linapacan, Magsaysay, Quezon, Roxas, San Vicente and Taytay) and the province were able to complete the 3-stage online workshop. 

09 2021 Obesity Causes

The Philippines is experiencing an increase in prevalence of obesity which the World Health Organization (WHO) defines as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. According to DOST-FNRI, the prevalence of obesity among adolescents has tripled in the past 15 years. This may cause several non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart diseases.

According to Dr. Donald Hensrud, director of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program, said that “During the pandemic, fitness centers have been shut down, our activity may be decreasing, or we may be working from home and not moving as much. In addition, our diet has changed. We may be eating more comfort food or eating what happens to be around the house rather than getting something that is healthier.”. The pandemic contributes to the increase in weight of a person. However, there are other factors that contribute to being overweight. Here are the factors of obesity and how they can be managed. 

09 2021 PPC MELLPI

Puerto Princesa City contenders, City Nutrition Program Coordinator Rafaelito Delos Santos and Barangay Nutrition Scholar Gina Taghap completed the list of regional contenders for outstanding local nutrition workers as the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team conducted their performance assessment last 20 August 2021 via Zoom Application.

09 2021 AIP Workshop of OrMin and Calapan

This year 2021, NNC MIMAROPA conducted a three-day workshop on integrating nutrition in the 2022 AIP as a follow through activity to secure the gains made for nutrition across all provinces and cities of the MIMAROPA region that have undergone the local planning and budgeting workshops in 2019.

For the final batch, the Provincial/City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, City/Municipal Health Officers, City/Municipal Planning and Development Officers, City/Municipal Budget Officers, and Committee on Health Chair of Oriental Mindoro Province and Calapan City were invited to participate in the three-day activity held 13-15 September 2021 via Zoom Application.
