SOCCSKSARGEN--- National Nutrition Council XII has partnered with two radio stations for this year’s Nutrition school-on-the-air (NSOA) implementation. The two stations selected as partners are Radyo Kadulangan, a Nutriskwela Community Radio Station in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat and Spring Radio, an LGU-owned station in Tampakan, South Cotabato.

One of the reasons child malnutrition has persisted in the Region is due to a lack of personnel to oversee and manage nutrition programs at the local level. In SOCCSKSARGEN, out of 53 Local Government Units (LGUs), only 15 full-time designated Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) were managing LGU's nutrition program.

The Mandanas-Garcia Ruling's implementation gives LGUs the chance to improve their nutrition program by setting up nutrition offices with sufficient staff to ensure the formulation and implementation of Nutrition Action Plans that includes efforts directed to families of nutritionally vulnerable individuals.

48thNNM NEDANEDA XII joined the 48th Nutrition Month (NM) celebration and conducted a simple launching program on July 4, 2022 to kick-off the month-long activities. NEDA XII lined-up activities  includes display of 48th NM banner at NEDA XII’s social media pages, nutrition briefing, nutri quiz, setting up of healthy pantry, stress management session and the once a week zumba session.

Nutrition Officer III, Ms. Annalita Mae V. Flores of the NNC XII shared key messages and the call for action for this year’s celebration. She shared how the pandemic affected the overall nutrition and mentioned the linkage between nutrition and resilience for a better new normal. The new normal opens opportunities to advocate nutrition under the new leadership following the recently concluded 2022 national and local elections, capitalize on the Full Devolution under Executive Order 138, and the development of successor plan on nutrition at the local level through the local nutrition plans.

Teenage mothers are more likely to experience adverse pregnancy outcomes and to be constrained in their ability to pursue educational opportunities than young women who delay childbearing thus might affect the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition.

SOCCSKSARGEN ranks 3rd according to the 2017 National Demographic Health Survey with a prevalence rate of 14.5%. Based on the Department of Health- Field Health Service Information System (DOH-FHSIS) of 2020, the Adolescent Birth Rate or live births to mothers ages 10-19 years old in the region is 20.25%, or a total cases of 9,957 adolescents.
