The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) XII, in collaboration with the National Nutrition Council (NNC) XII, successfully led a two-day Basic Child Growth Standard orientation on August 19 at the Hotel De Viajera in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

A total of 47 participants, including officials from the Barangay Local Government Units (BLGU), Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Volunteers, and Parent Leaders from the Province of Maguindanao who are part of the Bangsamoro Umpungan Sa Nutrisyon Project (BangUN Project), took part in the said activity.

NNC XII represented by DMOs Ruby Ann Laurito and Flora May Madrona discussed topics regarding the accurate weight and length/height taking, correct computation of age in months and Body Mass Index, and the right classification of the child’s nutritional status using the Weight for Age, Length/Height for Age, and Weight for Length/Height Child Growth Standard. The proper left arm positioning to obtain the correct MUAC measurement, comprehending acute malnutrition, and the significance of the first 1000 days of life were also covered.

The Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team of SOCCSKSARGEN has already started conducting the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation Protocol (MELLPI Pro), particularly for the Local Nutrition Focal Points for CY 2021. A validation visit was conducted in Brgy. Ginatilan, Kidapawan City, in search of the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar on August 11, 2022. The following day, August 12, the team assessed the CY 2021 performance of local nutrition focal points covering the City Nutrition Action Officer and City Nutrition Program Coordinator.

The municipal launching of the 48th Nutrition Month Celebration was held on July 7 in Barangay Napalico, Arakan, Cotabato with a total of 100 mothers/caregivers, 200 pre-school children, senior citizens, and 50 Persons with disability (PWD) attended.

During the launching, the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) members unite their efforts to deliver various services like advocacy and promotion of the First 1000 days of life, distribution of “Pinggang Pinoy” brochure for pregnant/lactating mothers, and campaign for oral health care and healthy lifestyle for pregnant mothers to improve the maternal and infant health and nutritional status.

The National Nutrition Council XII held an Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) cum Regional Nutrition Shepherding Team (RNST) meeting on August 8 at Greenstate Suites, Koronadal City. The attendees include representatives from the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Save the Children.

The meeting's discussion focused on the following agenda, 2022 Nutrition Month Celebration, Breastfeeding Awareness Month Campaign, “Tutok Kainan” Dietary Supplementation Program Implementation, first 1000 Days Monitoring Dashboard, and Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) Resolution on First 1000 Days which aims to address the issues and concerns pertaining to its implementation.

The National Nutrition Council XII formally concluded the nutrition month celebration last July 29, 2022, at the KCC Events Center. Koronadal City's Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Sangguniang Kabataan officers, and other nutrition partners were present. 

NO III Flores reiterated the nutrition month key messages and encouraged everyone to always observe and practice the lessons imparted by the 2022 Nutrition Month theme. One of the highlighted activities during the culminating event was the nutrition wizard contest. Barangay nutrition scholars and Sangguniang Kabataan members were among the ten participants. The activity was organized by the NNC XII Secretariat, with DMO II Aurel serving as the quiz master. 

Provincial Leadership and Governance Program

August 19, 2022 - Governor Rogelio "Ruel" Pacquiao of Sarangani Province expressed his commitment and support to collaborating with the 7 municipalities of the Province through its Local Chief Executives to end malnutrition that affects children and pregnant women by addressing the causes of malnutrition, particularly on food insecurity.

During the Accelerated Executive Session for Governor and Mayor's engagement organized by Zuellig Family Foundation led by Former DILG Usec. Austere Panadero, ZFF Executive Director, last August 19, 2022, at Acacia Hotel, Davao City, the local leaders were actively engaged through the open forum and discussion using the leadership framework by ZFF to understand the current nutrition situation and identify strategies to resolve the malnutrition problem through improving the province's health and nutrition system.
