PALO, Leyte - The Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA) Eastern Visayas chapter has a new set of officers and board of directors. The election was held during its first meeting for this year.
Ms. Teresita Bayotas-Garado, Public Health Nurse and concurrent Municipal Nutrition Action Officer of the municipality of Maydolong was elected Board of Director representing the province of Eastern Samar. Ms. Garado’s government service spanned more than 3 decades starting in 1991 as the municipality’s Public Health Nurse (PHN).
On top of her being a PHN, she is a doting mother to her children, a loving and supportive wife to her husband. In 2016, her husband a former public-school principal ran and won as the mayor of Maydolong, Eastern Samar.

PALO, Leyte - The Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA) Eastern Visayas chapter held its election of new set of officers. The election was represented by NAOs of 6 provinces, cities, and federated NAO presidents.
The beauteous Jassie Acla Alegre was elected NAOPA EV chapter as one of the association Auditors. Jassie as she is fondly called is the newly appointed permanent Nutrition Officer II (NOII) of Borongan City in Eastern Samar.
She was also designated as City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) on November 26, 2021. Her appointment came before the implementation of the Devolution Transition Plan (DTP). The creation of the present nutrition plantilla position was a result of the persistent and consistent advocacy of NNC 8.
Before her appointment as NOII and concurrent CNAO, she has a vast experience both in the hospital and community work. As a registered nurse, she has worked as hospital and a school nurse. Wanting to serve as community worker, she applied and work with Department of Social Work and Development’s (DSWD) Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI CIDSS).
She was an area coordinator in several municipalities in Eastern Visayas, the position she held for five years before joining as Borongan CIty’s CNAO.
Leadership wise, this 31 years old nurse was awarded as Most Outstanding Coordinator in the entire Eastern Visayas.
In such a short a time as CNAO, she was able to lobby and approved nutrition budget of 3.6 million. This is on top of the sectoral budgets. Last year, at the middle of the pandemic, she initiated a Nutrition Program Management (NPM) training cum City Nutrition Action planning/workshop assisted by NNC 8 staff. The training cum planning-workshop paved the way for the approval of the above nutrition budget.

PALO, Leyte - The Information Management Officer (IMO) of Leyte visited the 5th a district of Leyte, one of the areas hardly-hit aby Typhoon Odette last year. The IMO visited the municipality of Matalom, Bato, Hilongos, Hindang and Inopacan.
These 5th District of Leyte municipalities were part of the humanitarian assistance of UNICEF, the Department of Health and in close coordination of the National Nutrition Council 8.
Said municipalities during the monitoring visit are implementing Milk Feeding Program under the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
The target participants are the day care children. During the visit, MSWDO Ms. Georma Z. Cavero has an ongoing distribution of milk to the Child Development Workers (CDWs). The milk feeding program will run for 120 days. The CDWs were instructed how to store and distribute the milk commodities before giving it to the day care children.
Pursuant to the Republic Act No. 11037 or “Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino”, the DSWD in coordination with the local government units (LGU) and other agencies is mandated to implement a supplementary feeding program (SFP) to address undernutrition among day care children (ages 2-5 years).

HILONGOS, Leyte - The National Nutrition Council 8 embarks on partnership with Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organization (ARBOs).
A Marketing Agreement (MA) between NNC 8 and the Tagbawto-Hilusig Communal Irrigators’ Association, Inc. of Hilongos, Leyte was signed and signals the start of the Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program (TK-DSP) for 6-23months old children and nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women.
RNPC Catalino P.Dotollo Jr. represented the NNC8 while Mr. Ruelito M. Vilbar, Association President represented the Tagbawto Hilusig Communal Irrigators’ Association, Inc.
Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program aims to contribute to the prevention of stunting among children 0-23months old by improving the quality and quantity of food and nutrient intakes and utilization of related Early Childhood Care and Development in the First 1000 Days (ECCD F1KD) services among children 6-23months old children and nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women in the target Tutok Kainan program areas.

PALO, Leyte - The municipalities of Matalom and RHU Inopacan started to distribute the Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTFs) to the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Rural Health Midwives (RHMs) in managing moderate and severely wasted children 6-59 months through its weekly ration.
Dr. Josephine O. Zafico said that their newly hired Nutritionist-Dietitian is likewise starting to distribute RUTF to the Geofraphically Isolated. And Disadvantage Areas (GIDA). They are going to include routine assessment and nutrition counselling among mothers and caregivers.

PALO, Leyte - The Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA) Eastern Visayas chapter held its election of new set of officers. The election was represented by NAOs of 6 provinces, cities, and federated NAO presidents.
NAOPA elected MNAO Edward Fermani-Lor as their new President. Lora is the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer of Hilongos, Leyte. He was almost 10 years as MNAO. Though designated MNAO, Lora requested the LGU to have a separate nutrition office. It was in July 2021 just during the culmination of nutrition month celebration when the office was formally turn over to MNAO Lora.
The nutrition office has two other staff to assist MNAO Lora in its day-to-day operation. The nutrition office has also a separate budget aside from sectoral funds.
MNAO Lora has maintain the municipality’s status as Green Banner Award. The municipality also bagged the 2019 Green Banner Seal of Compliance. He also bagged the 2019 Regional Outstanding Focal Point (Municipal Nutrition Action Officer).
As supervisor of our Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), He is also instrumental for winning the Provincial Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar for Leyte Province.
Lora being an emphatic speaker, is most of the time invited by NNC 8 to be a resource speaker of the agencies various trainings and workshop.
To date Lora is conducting Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Implementation (MELLPI Pro) at the barangay level. Lora together with other members of the Municipal Nutrition Committee hopes to finish the barangay level MELLPI Pro. On top of the several activities implemented by the nutrition office, He is also preparing for the incoming MELLPI Pro to be conducted by Provincial Nutrition Evaluation Team (PNET) of Leyte.
