Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano expressed her support to the NCR Nutrition Shepherding Project during the courtesy visit of the members of the Regional Nutrition Shepherding Team (RNST) held on October 5, 2022.
Present during the visit were NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa Federizo, Executive Director of Grace Family Helper Project Marlene Navarro who is also the Chair of RNST, Ms. Liza Ross Ferrancullo of MMDA and Team Leader for Pasay City, PopCom-NCR Assistant Regional Director Mary Jane Casimiro and Development Management Officer II Theresa Rivas of NNC-NCR.

The 2022 celebration of Filipino Elderly Week urges older persons to exercise and eat right to maintain a healthy body. An older person is defined by the United Nations as a person who is over 60 years of age. Older persons are important members of society and make significant contributions through their wisdom, skills, knowledge and expertise.
Filipino Elderly Week is celebrated every first week of October by Proclamation No. 470 which establishes the obligation of the country to secure the well-being of the older population. Spearheaded by the National Commission of Senior Citizens, this year’s theme is Older Persons: Resilience for Nation-Building.

The Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) of NCR, Inc. elected its Officers and Board members for CY 2023-2025 during the meeting held on September 9, 2022 at the NNC Boardroom, Taguig City.
The new set of officers was elected from the presidents of the BNS Association of the seventeen (17) local government units in Metro Manila. The conduct of election was done through secret balloting supervised by the National Nutrition Council – NCR headed by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo. However, representatives from the cities of Caloocan, Navotas and Valenzuela were not present during the election.

The Regional Nutrition Shepherding Team (RNST) of NCR are now ready to assist the new priority local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila as part of the Regional Nutrition Shepherding Project. In August, the ‘shepherds’ were trained on Nutrition Shepherding. During the training, the RNST planned the details for the implementation of the Project in NCR.
Supported by the Regional Nutrition Committee Resolution No. 1 Series of 2020 entitled, “Resolution Declaring the New Priority Areas of the Regional Nutrition Shepherding Project”, the Project will focus on mentoring the big cities of NCR namely, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay and Quezon City. These LGUs will be mentored on effective nutrition program management with focus on (1) nutrition policies, (2) nutrition planning and budgeting, and (3) local nutrition structures and human resource.

Overweight and obesity are both health risks associated with non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and stroke, diabetes, and cancer, among others. Overweight means weighing more than the required weight for one’s length or height, while obesity is the condition of being severely overweight.
According to the 2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey conducted by the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute, overweight and obesity prevalence rates among school-age children, adults, and the elderly have increased since 2015. Among adolescents, 1 out 10 was overweight/obese and 8 out of 10 were insufficiently physically active.

The National Nutrition Council – NCR (NNC-NCR) assisted the City of Manila and Quezon City in the formulation of their Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP) 2023-2025 during the workshop held on September 27-30, 2022 at The Bayleaf Cavite.
The City of Manila and Quezon City are among the program areas of the Nutrition Shepherding Project of the Regional Nutrition Committee of NCR. Selected members of the city nutrition committees (CNC) of the two (2) cities served as the planning core groups.
