Danao City, Cebu – The Danao City Nutrition Committee is the first local government unit to hold the NNC-funded roll out training on promoting good nutrition for the year among the priority four provinces in Central Visayas.
The five-day Promote Good Nutrition Training was held last February 4 to 8, 2013 at Jill Building, Tabok, Maslog, Danao City.
Ms. Emerenciana A. Sayson, City Nutrition Program Coordinator, led the training together with Ms. Marlyn B. Barriga, Nurse IV and Ms. Amabelia B. Gomez, Nurse II, both of the Danao City Health Office. Some 30 Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Kagawad, Chair, Committee on Health attended the activity.

Cebu City – The MDGF 2030 Breastfeeding Photos are once again being shown to the public in an exhibit which opened last August 22, 2012 at the Mosaic Center (fronting Tela Fabrica), Lower Ground Floor, SM City Cebu. The photos depicting mother’s breastfeeding in different areas like the park, the mall, the restaurant for example, aims to promote breastfeeding and influence mothers that breastfeeding can be done anywhere and anytime.
In partnership with SM City Cebu, who also is a strong breastfeeding advocate, the Breastfeeding Photo Exhibit was part of the Breastfeeding Awareness Month celebration. The exhibit was officially opened with Ms. Ma. Teresa J. Mempin,Assistant Mall Manager of SM City Cebu, Dr. Nayda P. Bautista, Medical Coordinator for Child Health and Nutrition of DOH – CHD 7,representing DOH-CHD 7 Regional Director and RNC Chair Asuncion M. Anden, Dr. Parolita A. Mission, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of National Nutrition Council 7, Ms. Anabelle C. Lagrosas, VP for Radio – Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7 and Dr. Cytesse C. Cambronero of Philippine Obstetric – Gynecological Society, Cebu Chapter.

Cebu City - The Grand Nutrition Awards is an annual event that aims to recognize the outstanding performance and best practices of LGUs and front line workers in the region. The awards given this yearincluded the Green Banner Award for the Outstanding Province, City and Municipality in the region, the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) in the city and provincial and the Regional Outstanding BNS, the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN)Nominee and the Nutrition Honor Maintenance Award. The Good Nutrition Projects/Initiatives in the Region were also recognized. On top of these standard awards, the Search for the Most Promising LGUs in the Region was started this year.

Cebu city – Five mothers from 5 barangays of Cebu City show off their talents during the commemoration program of the Breastfeeding Awareness Month celebration held on August 22, 2012 at the Event Center, SM City Cebu right after the Breastfeeding March last August 22, 2012. Mothers of Barangay Lahug who gave a dance number garnered 3rd placer, mothers from Barangay Sambay 2 who rendered a Breastfeeding Jingle won 2nd place and a mother from Sambag 1 won the coveted 1st prize with a rendition of “Greatest Love of All”.
Health and nutrition services like nutrition counselling, blood pressure taking, random blood sugar testing courtesy of GTK, CCMC, Cebu Blood Donors Society, SWU Medical Technology students PAN and NDAP were provided during the event. To educate the mothers present and the onlookers, an informative talk about Caring for the Newborn was given by Dr. Mary Jane E. Iran, Neonatologist and an official of the Philippine Pediatric Society Cebu Chapter. Additionally, Ms. Khristle Ann C. Cañares, Barangay Nutrition Action Officer of Barangay Sambag I also gave a testimonial regarding the Exclusive Breastfeeding and its effects on her children.
Dignitaries present during the program were Engr. Miguel T. Gerson, Chief Administrative Division representing RD and RNC Chair Asuncion M. Anden of DOH – CHD 7, Dr. Parolita A. Mission, RNPC of NNC 7, Ms. Teresa J. Mempin, Assistant Mall Manager of SM City Cebu and Ms. Dionica L. Saquilon, President of Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP) – Cebu Chapter.
The event was also highlighted with raffles. Minor prizes included gift packs from Geltech Hayco, makers of Meat Magic and Gift Certificates from SM City Cebu. The major prizes given away included 5 Free Normal Delivery Package courtesy of IMAP – Cebu Chapter. SM City Cebu and Feed the Children Philippines provided the snacks for the attendees of the event. Cebu City – In promoting mother-baby friendly hospitals, five-day Lactation Management Trainings were conducted by NNC thru the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC). The last batch was held in Cebu City last January 28 to February 01, 2013. Some 1,298 obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses and nutritionists representing 222 hospitals nationwide joined the event. Some hospitals sent their pediatric and obstetric consultants while sixteen chief nurses and eight medical directors/chiefs of hospitals attended the training.
Lactation Management Training is a 40- hour course for clinicians to promote the mother-baby friendly hospital initiative specifically in promoting, protecting and supporting appropriate infant and young child feeding practices. The one week training involves 35.5 hours of lecture and 4.5 hours of practical exercises. Topics include the Accelerated Hunger-Mitigation Program, Anatomy of the Breast, Lactation Amenorrhea Method, Human Milk Composition, Breastfeeding including the myths and fallacies, RA 10028 or the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, EO 51 or the Philippine Milk Code, Revitalization of the MBFHI, Infant and Young Child Nutrition, Infant Feeding during Emergencies, among others.
