Cebu City – They marched in orange to attract attention and affect nutrition. Getting people to live a vegetable and fruit-based diet needs to be done in the same way that Filipinos today are hitched to cholesterol laden diets. The business of broadcasting may derive its subsistence from persistent food advertisers like ice cream, chips, and fastfood chains. Sometimes conscience pricks and responsibility prevails. Broadcasters found themselves with partners that made broadcast content more healthy. The National Nutrition Council Region 7 together with Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7 joined the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas Cebu Chapter during a parade that dovetailed the commemoration of Broadcasters month in September.

Where vegetable-based diets are not often the kind of adverts people hear on the radio, on air and even on blogs, the nutrition council tie-up with broadcasters comes with a commitment KBP Cebu member radio stations to air NNC's 30-second radio ad on vegetables for the whole month of September.

All in orange colored t-shirts, officers and members of MIND 7, NNC 7 staff and the officers of Cebu City Nutrition Scholars Association joined the parade march bringing the crowd to more than two hundred. It could have been mistakenly construed as a protest rally against cholesterol-laden adverts. Not exactly. It did give the public an attractive message that an orange a day keeps the colds away. Some other way of saying that the best diet is still vegetable and fruit-based. The walk that took off from Plaza Sugbo (fronting Cebu City Hall) to the Gymnasium of Cebu Technological University served to promote that brisk walking complements a vegetable and fruit diet. Walking for 30 to 45 minutes a day is as good for the heart as burning calories. How about freshly squeezed orange drink after all that perspiration? //DFB

Cebu City – For once, there was a bit of fresh images. Depicting animated images of breastfeeding, it was refreshing to have soulful images instead of misleading and aggressive themes. Animated images of promoting nutrition in vegetable and fruits boosted a refreshing intermission from the Tom and Jerry, anti-social themes of violence and vindication.

Each day, adults and children are helplessly bombarded, stimulated and at risk of media-related harm on television. Although images are animated cartoon characters, it is the subliminal messages and content that are harmful. The National Nutrition Council 7 has put its foot forward this time bringing nutritional content on TV. In its recent promotional collaterals, the council used animation in bringing the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and what viewers need to know about nutrients in vegetables and fruits.

Friendly to both adults and children, the nutrition cartoon characters did not have to bang, shoot and pound on each other just this once. From mind-numbing images that has become the genre of television cartoons, the National Nutrition Council 7 turned the same medium into mind-nourishing.

The breastfeeding anime was aired in August in time for the Breastfeeding Month celebration. The fruit and vegetable animations were aired in September. These video animations were made possible through the efforts of the Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7 under the leadership of Mr. Jun P. Tagalog, MIND 7 President; Manager, DYLA and KBP Cebu Executive Vice President with the support from the National Nutrition Council.  // DFB

Larena Siquijor Barangay Captains at advocacy meetingLarena, Siquior – Barangay Captains can also be Nutrition Captains. Changing unhealthy eating lifestyles and increasing investments and budget allocations for nutrition require intentional plan and strategy by grassroots or village leaders. There is often an intentional motive among local government units about orienting barangay captains on politics and governance, how about being intentional about orienting barangay captains on nutrition?

So that  barangay captains are part of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, 14 barangay captains were given orientation about nutrition last 05 March 2013 at the Session Hall, Larena Municipal Hall, Larena, Siquijor.  The following barangays were represented: Bagacay, Balolang, Bintangan, Bontod, Cabulihan, Calunasan, Cang-apa, Cangmalalag, Catamboan, Helen, North Poblacion, Ponong, Sabang and Taculing.
