Salt Monitoring Sept 2021Palo, Leyte--Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) VIII convened its second meeting for the year 2021 on August 31 at Hotel Alejandro, Tacloban City via blended approach.

The activity highlighted on the salt samples submitted for analysis at DOST VIII during the monitoring dated July 26, 2021 and May 20, 2021. In the discussion, RBATF VIII as agreed shall coordinate with the salt point of origin and relay issues to the BATF concerned. Additionally, RBATF VIII tackled and reviewed the Memorandum dated May 26, 2021 on the Guidelines and Tools for Local SIP Monitoring and Template Ordinance on Strengthening the ASIN Law from the National Nutrition Council.

To ensure that salt distributors only sell adequate and approved iodized salt to markets and stores, the task force in the presence of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Philippine National Police (PNP) and NNC8 conducted salt monitoring visits in the afternoon and collected salt samples to 3 FDA registered salt distributors. Said samples will be forwarded to DOST VIII subject for iodine analysis.

Validation Hilongos 2021Tacloban City--- Leyte Province contender for the Local Nutrition Action Officer of the Year, MNAO Edward F. Lora meet with the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) for monitoring and validation on 25 August 2021 in Hilongos, Leyte.

Serving as Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) for nine (9) years, MNAO Lora is committed in serving the poor especially the children and mothers in Hilongos.

Though as MNAO he is under the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, MNAO Lora was instrumental to the successful nutrition program activities in the municipality particularly on the implementation of the infant and young child feeding (IYCF).

This year, the National Nutrition Council included the monitoring of the local nutrition focal points using the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) Pro tool for the nutrition focal points.

Performance evaluation for local nutrition action officer is assessed through the following elements: (1) coordination; (2) orientation, promotion, and advocacy; (3) planning; (4) Implementation; (5) monitoring and evaluation; and (6) resource generation.o

Golden rice PhilriceGolden Rice is a genetically modified crop intended to increase dietary vitamin A. A serious health problem in developing countries, like the Philippines. Vitamin A deficiency can led to blindness and premature death.

Golden Rice, which was developed in the hopes of combatting vitamin A deficiency by a team of European scientists in the late '90s. Through bio-fortifications, golden rice is genetically modified to provide an essential nutrient that white rice lacks: beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body.

Filipino farmers will become the first in the world to be able to cultivate a variety of rice enriched with nutrients to help reduce childhood malnutrition, after receiving the green light from regulators.

In the Philippines, Golden Rice was developed by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) in partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to contain additional levels of beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.

Hakab Online 2021Palo, Leyte--Department of Health with the National Nutrition Council conducted a 3- day webinar series to commemorate the celebration of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. The activity was in coordination with WHO, UNICEF, KOICA and other developmental partners and civil society organizations. It was participated in by health and nutrition workers and other stakeholders in the entire country.

To close the celebration, Breastfeeding Pinays, the largest breastfeeding support group in the country organized Hakab Na! 2021 Online on 29 August 2021. The event carries the theme “Tulong-tulong sa Pagpapasuso sa First 1,000 Days.”

Hakab Na is an annual simultaneous breastfeeding event. The pandemic did not stop the annual event but this time via online platform. Participated by breastfeeding mothers across the country including mothers, nutrition workers and breastfeeding support groups in Eastern Visayas.

Hakab means “Latch” and the phrase Hakab na! is an invitation for mothers to latch their baby onto their breast. Every month of August, the Department of Health celebrates National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. This event aims to spread awareness and proper information about breastfeeding.

breastfeedingAs we end the celebration of breastfeeding awareness week and breastfeeding awareness month, we in the health and nutrition network together with development partners is one in our call to all would be mothers, already mothers and will be mothers again to practice BREASTFEEDING.

“Breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, and exclusively for the first six months has lifelong benefits. It is a baby’s best source of nutrition, promoted bonding between mother and infant,” said UNICEF. It boosts brain development and immune systems, hence it is the baby’s first immunization.

As the country faced with the challenges of bringing a baby into the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever that we provide mothers with the support they need to breastfeed.

Evidence shows that vertical transmission of COVID 19 between mother and the unborn infant or fetus is very rare. Likewise, transmission of COVID 19 in breast milk.

NIEM Planning Hilongos AugustHilongos Leyte— Members of the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) in the municipality of Hilongos participated in the formulation of the local Disaster Risk Reduction Management-Health-Nutrition in Emergencies (DRRM-H-NIEM) Plan on 23-24 August 2021 at the Hon. Loreto P. Lora’s Hall, Legislative Building, Hilongos, Leyte.

The planning workshop was primarily convened for the group to formulate the NIEM Plan which will subsequently be integrated in the Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP), DRR Health Sector Plan and further be mainstreamed in the DRRM Plan.

In his welcome message, Mayor Albert R. Villahermosa encouraged the team to craft a plan that will help answer the needs of the vulnerable groups in the municipality during disaster.

Additionally, Hon. Bernadeth M. Nerves, the Sangguniang Bayan-Committee on Health Chairperson who personally attended the planning workshop relayed that making the plan will ensure help that the children and mothers are protected during emergencies.

The Local Nutrition Committee functions as the Local Nutrition Cluster as mandated in the NNC GB Resolution No.1, Series 2009.
