DSPTK Oreintation Aug2021Tacloban CityTutok Kainan (TK) a national dietary supplementation program (DSP) and the National Nutrition Council’s COVID-19 response ready to start in October 2021 revealed by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo, Jr. during the General Orientation of the TK local government unit (LGU) implementers on August 11 and 12, 2021 at Hotel Alejandro, Tacloban City.

Tutok Kainan focuses on a much-needed nutrition intervention, dietary supplementation of pregnant women and young children 6-23 months old, especially during the pandemic where livelihoods of the marginalized families are at stake.

Dr. Dotollo added that fifty-four (54) identified target areas are from the region as the beneficiary of dietary supplementation program targeting children 6-23 months old.

The DSP aimed to prevent stunting and provide a platform for educating mothers on desirable complementary feeding practices including promotion of local food supply value chain between the national government program “TutoK Kainan” and local agrarian reform beneficiary organizations, sustainable livelihood program associations, and farmer-fisher folk cooperatives.

Palompon Mayor Orients DSP August2021Palo, Leyte-Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Catalino Dotollo Jr. together with NOIII Dr. Nino Archie A. Labordo provided orientation to Palompon Mayor Myra Georgina L. Arevalo and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Lovelyn Ovales-Nunez and with DOH DMOIV Mae Analyn Tonacao Payos on Tutok Kainan: Dietary Supplementation Program (TK:DSP) on 9 August 2021 at the Mayor’S Office, Municipal Building, Palompon, Leyte.

The town is one of the municipalities identified in the Phase III under the 100 Million Congressional Allocation of Senator Imee Marcos. Palompon has 3 allocated barangays with 106 beneficiaries of 6-23 months children.

Discussed by the NNC staff are the feeding schemes with 180 feeding days duration. Likewise, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) where it stipulates the roles and responsibilities, monitoring and inspection teams and LGU counterpart such as vehicle to deliver the cooked meals/snacks and cooking condiments. The Mayor vowed to provide counterpart support to the said program.

BF AwarenessWorld Breastfeeding Week is an annual celebration held every year from August 1 to 7 in over 120 countries, including the Philippines. World Health Organization (WHO) states breastfeeding as one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. This year, the theme for breastfeeding week is 'Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.

World Breastfeeding Week aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health and welfare of babies, as well as a wider push fir maternal health focusing on good nutrition, poverty alleviation and food security.

Breastfeeding is the best way to provide young infants with the essential nutrients required for growth and development. Breastmilk is the ideal food for infants. It is safe, clean, and acts as the babies' first vaccine, protecting them against many common childhood according to WHO.

There are many benefits of breastfeeding in infants. It helps boost their immune system, lowers the infant's mortality rate, lowers the risk of developing infections such as respiratory tract infections, diabetes, allergic diseases, and childhood leukemia, and helps enhance the cognitive function of the baby.

Additionally, breastmilk is extremely nutritious and healthy for the baby and can help the baby develop a healthy weight.


There has been a lot of misinformation around breastfeeding specially amid COVID 19 pandemic. Transmission of active Covid-19 through breast milk and breastfeeding has not been detected to date according to the World Health Organization hence, there is no reason to avoid or stop breastfeeding.

NPM Training AugustTacloban City- Members of the Northern Samar Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) attended the five-day training on Nutrition Program Management held on August 2-6, 2021, at Casa Miguel, Catarman, Northern Samar.

Funded by the PNC, the training aimed to equip the PNC members and other stakeholders to critically analyze the nutrition situation and identify appropriate interventions to address malnutrition at the local government unit utilizing the NPM process.

Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Ninfa Caparroso-Kam, in her opening message said that a focused and integrated interventions is necessary to combat the long problem of malnutrition in the province.

Included as adjunct topic is the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 shared by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo, Jr. which provides guidance in the formulation of the local nutrition action plan (LNAP).

Additionally, Dr. Dotollo advocated to include in the updated local nutrition action plan the creation of the nutrition action officer with an office and focused interventions on the First 1,000 days of the child.

NM Winners July2021TACLOBAN CITY - The National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Eastern Visayas on Thursday held its 2021 Nutrition Month Culmination Activity to wrap up the month-long annual celebration.

This year, the nutrition month campaign is anchored on the theme "Malnutrisyon Patuloy na Labanan, First 1000 Days Tutukan," which calls for continued efforts from all sectors in addressing malnutrition, focussing on the First 1000 Days of life as the strategic intervention to prevent stunting and obesity.

The highlight of the virtual activity is the announcement of winners of the NNC8's 47th Nutrition Month online contests, which was participated not only by nutrition advocates in the region but also some from Luzon and Mindanao.

For the nutri-poster making contest, Jomari Contado Manansala from Maydolong, Eastern Samar won first place followed by Dave Aron Globio of Balangkayan, Eastern Samar; Francis Albert Penero of Alangalang, Leyte; Gino Paul Lumpas of Tacloban City, and Hector Ubas of Lavezares, Northern Samar, winning second to fifth place, respectively.

In the nutri-jingle making contest, Elisha Grace Sandoval of Tacloban City was declared first-place winner, while VJ Leonidas Guillemer from Palompon, Leyte and Maydolong National High School (MNHS) in Eastern Samar, winning second and third place, respectively.

Announced as the winner for the nutri-infomercial making contest is Cheza Mae Piangco from Tacloban City, second-placer is MNHS, third is Ian Chester Solver from Camarines Norte, and fourth place is Kristian Bandon from Catarman, Northern Samar.

ROBNS DanaoTacloban City- On Thursday, the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) visited and validated two of the provincial contenders for the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS) in the Province of Samar.

BNS Elvira E. Roluma, 51 serving the community of Barangay Danao I is the contender of Calbayog City, Samar. She started her passion as a Community Health Team volunteer way back 2013 and eventually designated as the barangay nutrition scholar after the one assigned as BNS got a post as a local councilor in their barangay.

Likewise, the RNET visited BNS Lanie D. Ancheta of Barangay Cabunga-an, Tarangnan as the contender for the Province of Samar. BNS Ancheta is the Vice President of the Municipal Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars and the treasurer of the Tarangnan Volunteer Workers Association.

Both contenders displayed very satisfactory performance based on the programs, projects and activities conducted in the past four years 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 as reflected in their respective documents and portfolios.

Included in the process of the validation, the RNET administered the examination and interviewed the two contenders.

The Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) Pro for the local nutrition focal persons assesses the performance of the frontline nutrition focal along with her core functions in the delivery of nutrition services in her locality.
